I couldn't watch it because of the power cut in my area.

I remember the mridangist was Sri Manikantan (don't remember his initials, he is a senior student at the Carnatic Music College). The ghatam could have been played by Kumbakonam Balaji Sairam but my memory is hazy sixteen days after I attended the event.

The hair style of mridangam artist looked like Patri , but he was wearing glasses.
There was morching too.

It most definitely was not Patri on the mridangam.

Sri Manikantan played for Smt. E. Gayathri last year too. She is to be commended for encouraging students from her college to play for her instead of demanding that she deserves a mridangist of the stature of Umayalpuram Sivaraman or Trichy Sankaran.

Was there a ghatam too or just a morsing?

I saw it today morning. It started by 7.55 AM. The first song and last three songs were telecast. The ragamalika was Vadavarayai matthakki. The last ragam in the ragamalika is Kapi and not Lalitha.

Mridangam- Tirunageswaram ......

Only Gayathri can play this level of concert. Unfortunate that she is not accepting many concert these days. Also, twice in Bangalore, she had not turned up due to some reason. But I had turned up :(

There were two occasions, (in Hindolam swarams, if I remember right), there were total apaswaram-like sounds, both identical. Obviously it was some kind of embellishment/ special effect. Specialists may be able to explain.

I had the pleasure of listening to this concert , and really wished all through that 45 minutes that she plays concerts more often , for the benefit of rasikas ! Pure , Sweet and precise playing. Really enjoyed the Hindolam Thanam where the artiste played such swift notes - excellent speed across octaves , played so effortlessly !

I think it is a great year for vidushi veena Gayathri. She being appointed as principal of music college, acharya choodamani from skgs and she also playing in the jaya tv . I have heard only in recordings , hope she gets noticed and gets featured in more and more live veena concerts.

There is a write up titled "pristine pure" in her blog, where she has written a lot which I am not aware.

IN the same blog there is also a you tube clipping of Tirunageswaram T R S Manikantan

Veena Gayathri is an AUTHENTIC PRODIGY whose concerts from early age WERE CLASSICS. She was noticed & APPRECIATED but the FAVOURING of VOCAL MUSIC which started even then has now reached a stage that EVEN IF MUTHUSWAMY DHIKSHITHAR OR KARAIKUDI SAMBASIVA IYER APPEARED TODAY THEY WILL NOT GET A SINGLE CONCERT. She was QUITE POPULAR & HAILED AS GREAT LIKE T H VINAYAKARAM & M CHANDRASEKARAN. ONLY Ravi Kiran & Mandolin Srinivas ESCAPED THAT FATE & I THANK GOD FOR THAT. I BLAME THE INEPT SABHA DIGNITARIES, INANE CRITICS, AND THE PUBLIC(I INCLUDE MYSELF IN THIS GROUP).
EVEN S.B.& CHITTI BABU SURVIVED USING MARKETING TECHNIQUES I WILL NOT DESCRIBE HERE as its waste of time. SORRY that even Rajeshnat a true rasika has not heard her in person.....VKV

THATS why I am somewhat shocked even knowledgeable persons in this forum do not appear to have heard her! Her mother Aswathamma is an EXCELLENT TEACHER in addition to being a great musician herself. Gayathri is somewhat like LGJ when it comes to playing KRITIS as well she understands not just the music but the language, technicalities which she can implement with PRECISION & IMAGINATION, AS WELL AS CAN INTERPRET WHAT THE COMPOSER INTENDED- I contend that VERY FEW are in that category.......VKV

I still remember the first time I heard her, may be it was her maiden concert, not sure, it was in Perambur Sangeetha Sabha.
She was a small girl in a simple pavadai blouse. The music was so divine. We were amazed.

Rajesh: I do not know why you say 'she gets noticed', since she is not a stranger but I see what you are getting at. It is strange that we do not hear about her often. kssr and HR say above that she does not accept many concerts.

I am glad Jaya TV featured her, thus giving us an opportunity to hear her wonderful playing.

VK
Every one knows her callibre inclusive of sabhas. But for various reasons there was quite a break in her career- I remember reading a thamizh magazine few years back where she had to move with her husband who is a merchant navy employee or something(decade or two back). Only this year after the appointment of her as principal by CM of TN and other things like acharya choodamani , jaya tv etc we are again noticing her. Bit out of sight is surely out of mind .

The reason I am somewhat persisting is because of SEVERAL EXAMPLES that I am aware of. I am glad that the current generation is FAR BETTER THAN MINE in terms of RECOGNISING TALENT & TODAYS PERFORMERS are also smarter in terms of projecting their talents better. One example that bothers me no end is Radha-Jayalakshmi who also I consider to be top notch but they were NOT recognised or awarded their due.( DUE TO THE GENIUS OF CLEVELAND V.V.SUNDARAM many of the persons in this category got recognised in CLEVELAND and duly MADRAS FOLLOWED IT). I think many know the names of the artists. In the case of R-J when they were approached they refused to accept any award from Cleveland or any one else for that matter because they felt they were NOT PROPERLY honoured in a timely fashion. I suspect that Gayathri LEGITMATELY might have turned down concerts for similar reasons. Actually she tried various experiments as I suspect she was not getting the recognition on the concert circuit. I am writing to at least hope that the CURRENT GENERATION will be smarter than mine. Just today I just finished listening to a DIVINE CONCERT AT PARVATHI by T.K.Rangachary and another MIND BLOWING R.T.P. IN CHANDRAKAUNS by Thanjavur. S. KALYANARAMAN. SIMPLY OUT OF THIS WORLD. Where are they in the firmament of the Eternal Greats in 20th century carnatic music? EVEN THE GENIUS PALANI was given close to ZERO AWARDS & I am VERY HAPPY THAT THE GREAT TIRUCHY SANKARAN HIS PRIME DISCIPLE AT LEAST IS BEING RECOGNISED FOR HIS GENIUS & UNMATCHABLE CAREER THOUGH THE RECOGNITION AGAIN SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED LONG TIME AGO.VKV :-ss

the cold shoulder given to instrumental concerts is all the more a pity as their performance standard is usually far higher than that of the singers who generally possess neither timbre nor technique :-s The standard of vocalisation and voice production being what they are in Carnatic concerts, I far prefer listening to instrumentalists.

Dear Karthikbala, I AGREE WITH YOUR CONCLUSIONS. I am of the opinion generally speaking the INSTRUMENTALISTS (includes the pakka & upa pakka vadyams) of today ARE SUPERIOR & can even as a group can be classified as SUPERIOR TECHNICALLY to the preceding generation in a STATISTICAL FASHION. I am glad you are pointing out the RELEVENT POINTS which are not being pointed out by the so called self styled experts. VKV

I now understand as to why members were reluctant to appreciate her elevation as VC of Tamil nadu music university..when the information was posted at

She was a child prodigy. When she started playing on stage she was known as Baby Gayathri.
A true musician, and a great vain inks. Her style is so pleasant and brings out the bhavam of the krithi.
Hindolam in this concert was out of the world.
She truly deserves the SK.
