Sanjay Subrahmanyan at Bharath Kalachar

Post by arasi »

I am surprised that there are no threads so far on any of Sanjay's season concerts (where are all the other fans of his?).

I am not qualified to write reviews. I know that :) Having been reprimanded by an artiste recently for my mistaking one vidvAn for another landed me in trouble [-x

So, having been put in my place, I dare not venture into territories I'm not a pro at.

Yet, as a rasikA who is particularly fond of his music, I'm disappointed. Of course, his Divya prabandam concert in the MMU was a gem, I had heard from several sources.

The Bharath kalachar concert lasted three and a half hours to a packed audience. To this lay rasikA, the concert was a veritable treat.

Pro among pros, Nagai Muralidharan and Tanjavur Ramadas (I like his playing a lot and he just jived that day) added to my listening pleasure. Not Murali as listed, but the ghatam vidvAn from Karnataka (Guru...? How many Guru-prefaced names to reckon with among accompanists!) did a very good job too.

Song list please, and a review from a pro too!

Thanjavur Ramadas is an excellent mridanga vidwan. I am glad to see him featured a couple of times with Sanjay during the season. He is one of few direct descendants of the PMI tradition (with the same patented sound) that is still out there. Kamalakar Rao being the other.

Ramesh,
No wonder! I have heard PMI play many times in my childhood days. Ramdas and Kamalakara Rao are among mrudangam players I'm fond of listening to. I have not heard them play loudly either.

Ramadas is one in Sanjay's set of rotating mrudangists, isn't he?

Thanks Kunthalavarali.
Wow. Three viruthams? I can imagine that they were all very special.

Arasi, I suppose you meant PMI?

Ramesh,
Your turn to call me pazham nI (you are old) ;)
Overload of concerts, and resulting fatigue too for me. Will go a bit slower from now on. Of all the short-comings of advanced years, it's memory playing tricks here and there which is annoying. Thanks for correcting me.

Yes, it was a rich in virutham concert along with a mix of familiar songs from his repertoire and other not oft heard ones. The pallavi line was refreshing. The entire RTP was classy.

Kunthalavarali,
Thank you for the list. I would not have given the songs in the right order in which the vidvAn sang it ;) Would have omitted a few too. Both the varNam and vinAyaka kruti were there in the concert at the very beginning.
