Insight into Laya & Laya Vinyasam :: K.S.Kalidas Lec-Dem @ The MA 20/12/2013.

Once again, the orator in him came out in all its glory & it was a very insightful & eloquent lecture by Shri. KSK on the subject matter. Owing to time constraints, this was an abridged version of what he gave at the TAG centre, couple of weeks back. The talk was focused & quite rightly so, more on the basics of laya terminologies in day to day use and the constituents of a thani avarthanam in general. Will try to give a brief capture of what all he spoke,

1. Laya Vinyasam is not all about mathematics & restricted to the percussion artists alone. Even the singers do it.
2. Basics of terminologies like Laghu, Drutham, Aksharam, Maathrais, Gathi/ Nadai, kuraippu, theermAnams, etc.
3. Types of Sooladhi saptha thAlas, chApu thAlas & their angas,
4. Constituents of thani avarthanam. (It becomes too wordy to notate down everything here).

All these were accompanied by appropriate demos on the Mrudangam by his disciple, as & when the terminologies came up.

The programme concluded with his disciple playing a short & crisp thani avarthanam in Misra Jhampa thAlam.

In an interactive lec-dem like this one, where so many views & ideas were exchanged, it is quite a challenge to pen down everything that had happened. If anyone else was there, they can pen down their views too.

Would a recording of this be available? Misra jhampai is such a PSP school specialty.

This might be a place to mention that K Arunprakash is giving a lecdem Treasures of Laya at Raga Sudha Hall at 10.00am on 23rd Dec.

From what he was saying to me the other day, this should be at a somewhat deeper level than introducing audience generally to laya aspects: more of a specialist thing.

Sadly, I have to be out of town that day, with some tourist friends, and won't be able to attend.
