Charukesi has a special appeal with its ability to convey beautifully a feeling of yearning whether of love or devotion. Charukesi became popular with Tyagaraja’s composition ‘Adamodi Galadhe’. The song ‘Manmatha Leelaiyai’ sung by M K Tyagaraja Bhagavathar in a film of the 1940s drew attention to this raga. After Tyagaraja many composers composed in the raga. Whether it is Koteeswara Iyer's 'Neethanappa' or a more recent composition, a pada varnam by Lalgudi Jayaraman, they have added to our understanding of the raga. The programme includes these among many others and carries information on the raga

B N Suresh was one of the promising flautist, his talent was recognized by none other than T R Mahalingam. B N Suresh deeply admired the work that Mahalingam had done in advancing the technical range of the flute, but tried to use the technique to approximate the flute to the vocal style because in Carnatic music the song, with its lyrics, is the basis of performance. Different types of compositions have been included on this episode of Colours of a Raga to bring out the flavours of Saveri.

All artists develop their own style of expression. In Carnatic music, when this style is perfected and achieves a distinct character , it is called a ‘bani’. Once it is taken forward, it becomes a system of practice and performance. Many banis in Carnatic are identified with great musicians -like Ariyakudi, Musiri, GNB and Semmangudi. This programme looks at different banis pertaining to vocal music.

Behag , the colourful and romantic bhashanga raga borrowed from Hindustani music. With its usages that have double nishadas and double madhyamas, its quintessential phrases and sinuous traverse between notes, Behag has a character all its own. In concerts, though, it appears frequently towards the end, in the form of javalis, bhajans, shlokas or as part of ragamalikas. This programme looks at Behag and its qualities, and also plays a representative selection of compositions in the raga.
