The concert season of December has a comparably low count of instrument based concerts. In that very small subset of instrument based concerts, few performing vainikas generally take very less share . vainika Emani kalyani Lakshmi Narayanan was certainly not that noticed in concert circuit of Chennai, despite being the daughter of famous veena vidwan of yesteryear Emani Sankara Sastri.

Vainika Smt Emani kalyani started with muttuswami dikshitar krithi mahaganapathim in nattai with a short cycle swara burst, where one felt the speed of swaras could have been a bit faster. The next number started with a rare alapana in ganamoorthi with Thyagaraja krithi ganamurthE and it was a rich tapestry of raga bhavam that had the right emotive orientation. Another thyagaraja krithi in kalyana vasatham- nAdaloludai with a raga alapana was filled with intense fervor did pep up the concert.

There were four fillers of various sizes in sunOdha vinodini(devadi deva), Abheri(nagumOmu), varali(mamava meenAkshi) and khamas(BrocheVa revarurA) , one felt a bit more dwelling on atleast one krithi would have added more aesthetic depth . The main was in kalyani , with her alapana being concise , the taanam could have significantly moved towards a little more strength representing in three octaves. The thyagaraja krithi etA uNara in kalyani with swaras were precise with characteristic stress of madhyamam.

The tukkadas were a bit of a mixed bag. The dhanasri thillana was the pick there, but a bhajan number and her play where she stroked for few minutes in revati raga in the end just could not connect to the listener.bharathiar's theerada vilayattu pillai was just good.

The mrudangist Tanjavur Ramadas and ghatam artist Pudukottai Ramachandran played very well keeping always in mind that they are playing for a veena concert.In particular ramadas thoppi usage had the right sowkhyam. Tani was a very standard fare.

The academy generally has one evening prime slot for veena concert . With another veena concert in the prior evening concert in a neighbouring sabha, the crowd was indeed low. Vidushi emani kalyani could have also brought in more accuracy of pitch in veena , one found it bit missing in the small segment of taanam that she played for kalyani and also in few numbers before main.

Overall a very good concert for 2 and half hours.

After few years I had attended 4 crts in a day, it was not bad at all. Tx especially to the two percussion artist , a soothing instrument and definitely the lovely academy sound set up where they do the job so cleanly.

Rajesh, thanks. Is there a poochi tillana in Dhanasri or is it the one by ST?
Had not realized this was Emani-garu's daughter. I had also not heard of her till I saw the MMA schedule this year.
