With the season almost coming to an end, here is an interesting update that I thought I should share..
Sangitha Kalanidhi Designate Smt Sudha Ragunathan is launching a coffee book on her musical journey so far. Here is an email that I received from her today..
Dear Friends,
The Sangita Kalanidhi, being conferred upon me on 1 January 2014, by the prestigious Music Academy, Chennai, India, is a milestone in my career.
To celebrate the occasion, I am launching a coffee table book that reflects my musical journey. The launch is on the 4th of January 2014 at 4 :00 pm at the Rain Tree Hotel, Chennai. RSVP to [email protected].
There is also a photo and painting exhibition-details below.
Thank you for having been with me in this beautiful journey.
Looks very interesting.
By the way I have read and heard that awardees are forbidden to prefix the Padma award as a title to their names. The vidushi would be advised to delete that prefix immediately.

Have never understood that. What is the point of giving the award and then prohibiting people from using it? I think adding "recipient" to the title is allowed as I have seen that quite often.
Mahavishnu: I am reminded of the Coffee Table Book of Cosmo Kramer in the SEINFELD Sitcoms of the Nineties, but then you must have been a kid!!! Just kidding!!!
Of course, Ramesh Jr knows Seinfeld too well, because he lives on in reruns.
Now, wasn't there a character who was called Rerun in some show? Does Rerun have reruns?
Back to coffee table books, here's a question: how many coffee table books can a coffee table display without cluttering it? You can pile them up for display because there won't be too much material to read in them? '"bommai pArka nanRAga irukkum' (an old expression speaking of the merit of illustrated books) (*)
Arasi, Mahavishnu and MKR,
I hold you all responsible for triggering the following thoughts :
1. What makes a coffee table book (=CTB) happy?
If no one spills coffee on her.
2. How many CTBs are appropriate for display?
One. More would show you bought them at a discount fair.
3. If you had a choice of CTBs whom would you choose: Ravi Shankar, TMK or Sampurna, which one would you choose to display?
None. You would display "Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Pottery" because the others would merit at least browsing.
4. How many CTBs would it take to scare a burgler?
Two, both placed open with the table lamp on through the night, with a half drunk cup of coffee. He would know you suffer from insomnia.
5. What is the best birthday gift for a friend, a CTB, a Godiva chocolate box or a wrist watch?
Definitely not the CTB as you can't remove the price tag.
Remember that coffee table book was a coffee table too That is quite a hilarious episode.
I guess we are all still getting used to the bANi of the next generation sangItha kalAnidhis
Precedent has been set and it will be easier for future SKs!!

While it is heartening to note Carnatic Musicians are awarded with Padma Awards, the general opinion is that
sometimes very senior musicians are omitted. For example, Violin Maestro VV Subramaniam and Mirudanga
Chakravarthy TK Murthy are not considered so far.
