Another article about Rasikas.org in the Deccan Chronicle

Post by mahavishnu »

I had an opportunity to write an article about rasikas.org for the Deccan Chronicle. Many of you are mentioned in it (all in good light) :)

Image

Here is a link to the article itself. http://epaper.deccanchronicle.com/artic ... ?id=248478

And in case you cannot find the link, here is the text of the article.

A phenomenon called Rasikas.org
-Ramesh Balasubramaniam

In this era where events happen at the speed of twitter and the ephemerality of snapchat, the influence of social media in our lives is undeniable. However, there is a place on the Internet where the world slows down to the pace of reading an old-fashioned morning newspaper with a cup of South Indian filter coffee. This is rasikas.org, a site dedicated to online discussions about every aspect of Carnatic music. With the Indian diaspora spread across multiple continents, rasikas.org provides music lovers with a much-needed canopy under which to learn, discuss, review and critique music.

Although there have been many discussion forums from the days of the old usenet groups to the now extinct websites like Sangeetham.com, rasikas.org has an ardent following and dedicated membership like no other place, real or virtual. For example, Dr. Ravishankar, a New Jersey physician and an expert on dance and musical lyrics, seldom begins his day without a visit to rasikas.org. A moderator of the forum from Chicago, who posts under the moniker "Vasanthakokilam", feels a sense of withdrawal when the site is even down for maintenance.

The brain behind the website is its founder, Mr. S. Ramakrishnan, an IT professional based out of the United Kingdom. He started rasikas.org in 2005, when there were no other structured sources for free expression and scholarly discussions on Carnatic music. Although the site began with only five members, there are currently over 7000 registered members from around the globe. Till today, he diligently maintains the website, updates the engines that make it spin and protects it from spammers and hackers.

While some of the rasika members have made their identities known to the public, many have chosen to remain anonymous. Some use the cloak of their anonymity to express their dissenting opinions without social consequence; although some use it exclusively to stir controversies. That said most of the discussions that take place in the forum are civil, scholarly, erudite and hugely informative.

Eminent vidwans and vidushis like Chitravina Ravikiran, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, Dr. M. Narmadha, Suryaprakash, Gayathri Venkakataraghavan, Shashikiran, Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam, Akella Mallikarjuna Sarma, Erode Nagaraj and Mannarkoil Balaji have all contributed significantly to the proceedings. Organizers, sabha secretaries and students of music all routinely check rasikas.org to get a sense of the latest goings on in the world of Carnatic music.

Many readers of the forum are not registered members; interestingly several of them are eminent musicians. The writer of this article, who routinely posts a number of reviews of major concerts, receives candid, appreciative comments from many leading performers (and the occasional brickbat too). Reviews of concerts trickle in from all around the globe; from people like Mr. Rajesh and Suresh in Chennai to several others in Bangalore, Mumbai, Australia, NZ, with a large majority of the overseas ones coming from the US and Canada.

However, as with any large family-like gathering, there are frequent intellectual disagreements amongst members on issues of interpretation, opinion and taste. Ms. Rajee Krishnan, herself a composer, often adds colour to the forum's discussions by offering an original perspective which helps people achieve middle ground during a heated and passionate debate.

Another key contributor to the forum Mr. Lakshman Ragde, based in Toronto, Canada shares lyrics from his repository of several thousand kritis. An erstwhile member Mr. Kulkarni has generously shared several hundred non-commercial recordings on the forum for academic and illustrative purposes. Veteran members like Dr. V.K. Viswanathan, a theoretical physicist at the Los Alamos labs in the US and Mr. M.K. Ramasubramaniam of New York often share scintillating stories from their five decades of experience of dealing with music. Mr. Nick Haynes, a prolific contributor, is now an instantly recognizable celebrity of sorts in all the sabhas of Chennai just from his posts on rasikas!

Mr. Uday Shankar, an intellectual powerhouse of the forum and inventor of a slide flute called the chitravenu, confesses that he has learned much about issues related to design and structure of instruments from the learned members of the forum, including professional musicians.

The forum hosts some deeply scholarly discussions on diverse topics that range from how the brain processes musical information, the musical genius of Lalgudi, the different schools of mridangam playing, to less salubrious topics like the state of washrooms in leading sabhas. Conversations about the acoustics of leading sabhas tend to mirror the spirit of the discussions on the state of their restrooms.

Recently, a select few of the global membership of this now influential web forum gathered in Chennai for their annual pow-wow, graciously hosted by Sri Ravikiran. Much of the effort for bringing people together from literally every corner of the globe goes to Mr. Nageswaran, best described as a rasika-statesman. The annual meeting brings a great sense of camaraderie to this community and energizes the membership for another year.

The forum is presently in the midst of a deluge of the margazhi season's reviews. Next week, things will return to normalcy where members will go back to intense discussions on who next year's Sangitha Kalanidhi will be, but Mr. Ramakrishnan, founder admin, will ensure that the proceedings always remain parliamentary.

Ramesh Balasubramaniam is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of California and a Carnatic enthusiast. He is interested in how the brain processes music, especially rhythm. He can be reached at [email protected].

Mahavishnu: Nice article.Nice bumping into you the last couple of days.As several of our forumites are likely to be attending various Sabhas,it would be useful for us all to carry a name tag. with--a suitable logo. While this season is over this would apply to concerts being held abroad like the upcoming Cleveland Festival.
As the forum gets publicity and members -new and old--post on a variety of topics, the intellectual ferment in the forum is very palpable. We need to encourage many of our music friends to join the forum--I have the burden of acting on my own suggestion by "coaxing" my family members to share their perspectives on the anecdotes that I am narrating that they have been privy to. I hesitate because many a family feud over the last 5 decades has arisen because of "polar" views on every aspect of music, musicians we still do not have a consensus on what constitutes good music!!! Perhaps one of these days I should write a short novel with the family characters with names disguised!!

Jokes aside, thanks to all the active forumites(why not callourselves RASIKAHOLICS") who make the forum enjoyable!!

The Deccan Chronicle published a pic of me a week or so ago. I knew it had been taken, but then forgot about it as I don't take the paper, but a kind rasika who sees me at several venues kept a copy for me and gave it.

Ramesh, I wish the 'like' functionality was back! Nicely written... :-BD

I'm sure that in many of our minds, the recent malicious hacking of the forum is linked to the publication of the article in the Hindu (I can't help but wonder if an 'evil eye' had been cast - I confess I watched one of my all-time favorite movies, Midnight in the garden of good and evil, a few days back, and it may fuel my paranoia!), and ardently hope that this article will prove my paranoia groundless.

I do trust it draws in other rasikas online who are unaware of the forum.

Thank you all for the kind words! There is nothing that gives me more pleasure than to be invited to write a piece about us during the music season!

It has been wonderful to run into forumites all over town. MKR it was great to run into you on all those occasions.

I would also see MV, Nadhasudha regularly at the academy, also got to meet Ponbhairavi.

Semmu, Nick, Mrs. Nick and I had the pleasure of having lunch together at woodlands and followed up with coffee at the academy. We felt like it would have taken 100 threads of posts over several days to do what we did with a simple face-to-face!

I also had the pleasure to spending time with two inventors. One is our own Uday.

The other is this fascinating person that my father introduced me to before the GJR concert. http://www.thehindu.com/features/friday ... 404900.ece There was some mention of him in another thread.

It was a long lunch ...and the coffee wasn't quick either! We chewed over a lot of stuff, and it was good stuff.

Mrs N was amazingly patient. I wish I could spend every lunch time like that :)

The interesting part to me is it brought back MEMORIES OF LGJ whom I took to EVERY VIOLIN PERSON when I drove him 25K miles in 1971.Mr.Wimmer's comments about not using synthetic Resin also brought back memories of Palghat Raghu. He ALWAYS INSISTED on NOT USING "INSTANT" CREAM OF WHEAT SAYING "REGULAR" CREAM OF WHEAT is the ONLY THING IN USA THAT WORKS FOR THOPPI to produce the PROPER GUMKI. He mentioned even in the LEC/DEM. Not surprising considering he said OUT OF A THOUSAND "NAMS" ONLY ONE WILL TURN OUT RIGHT! I had to run around for a couple of hours in Manhattan before the concert as ONLY INSTANT cream of wheat was available in stores! I had to abandon the subway, arrange for others to bring KVN& PR to the Concert Hall & myself take a Cab to the Hall to introduce them!...
But it was WELL WORTH IT BEC. KVN & PR'S MRIDANGAM ALONG WITH THE THAMBURA gave me an idea of PERFECTION & HEAVEN ON EARTH!....VKV

Mahavishnu,

Your article in The Deccan Herald was very good. It brought to light our forum and it's tireless workers like Srikris, Vasanthakokilam, lakshmanji, Ravi, Arasi, Nick and many more whose names I missed, and others who participate in this. There are people like Srikris behind the scenes and the likes of Sri Nageswaran who organizes our meetings, and the hosts like Sri Ravikiran and the silent majority who read and get to know many things from this. Thank you.
One of the thankful silent majority

Good write up, except that your being a ChennaivAsi is not mentioned here--you certainly are not one of the CM rasikAs who is in Chennai only during the season!

Mahavishnu.
So good to read your second article in The Deccan Chronicle! My season came to an abrupt end due to unexpected circumstances. How I wish I had taken in more of the music and the company of my Rasikas friends :(

Thank you all.

Yes, I certainly told the guy that I'm a permanent fixture --- but there's many a slip twixt "interview" and newspaper page!

Arasi, so sorry that this season became a non-event for you. Hope you are both well, and will be able to make up for it next year.

Punarvasu, of course we remember your father with warmth and affection --- just as we have warmth and affection for you too.

Nick, same here. It is amazing when we could work Al Jolson and the Grateful dead into a conversation about Carnatic music, at the academy no less :)

Despite all my various nitpicks about the academy, it is still a very nice place to listen to music in the city. The loos are reasonably clean, the sound is ok, and things seem to be better organized than most places. I also managed to get in the library to spend a few minutes there.

Also had a good Woodlands lunch after that with Cool-ji, Ramkumar, Vainika, Sbala, mantra and Vijay!

Thank you, rshankar, Nick H, Mahavishnu, Rajeshnat and others for remembering my father. Yes, he would have been so happy to hear about Sandeep and Ramkrsihnan Murthy winning the laurels at MA. He has literally seen them growing, musically and otherwise and he was so proud of them. The youngsters were also very fond of him. I am happy atleast my sister from LA managed to attend a few concerts including theirs.

Even more so that they were both worked into a conversation about Smt Vedavalli...
I'd walk a million miles,
For one of your smiles,
Maami...
So much better than the original!

(as I mentioned, I was always uncomfortable, even as a child who never yet heard the word 'psychology,' with the extreme mother fixation in the Jolson song. Also... I guess I always took music just too seriously!) lol )

The sound, at least at the front, is excellent for Chennai. As a meeting place, what works so well is the lobby and canteen areas, where people can just sit a while. Oh, and the car park, even!

I wonder what they think about always being mentioned for their toilets!!!
