I think the admin had a rule that we would not post in regional scripts...is that not in vogue anymore? Or has rasikas become exclusively for people who read and write tamizh?

We may ask for a translation alongside rather than ban posting in regional script.
Is Thiruvadi Saranam sung by MS Amma available anywhere?

It is still there, it is a guidance not a rule.

There is the Tamil/Kannada/Malayalam/Telugu sections to post stuff in the vernaculars.

Dear All

Uploaded yesterday on the occasion of the 9th remembrance day of MS Amma and the 79th birthday of Smt Radha Viswanathan.
Note from the uploader Paramparaa1916 in youtube
Quote :
"We are very glad to share this rare recording of Smt M.S.Subbulakshmi and Smt. Radha Viswanathan learning a bhajan of Ma Indira Devi from Sri Dilip Kumar Roy. One can hear Sri Roy telling Smt. M.S. in the beginning that he'll sing softly so that she's heard over him, despite her subdued protesting. In the end his proud declaration can clearly be heard, "See? How she learnt (it)?!". This is one of several such heavenly sessions that happened at Kalki Gardens in the '60s and '70s. It was during these music sessions that Ma Indira Devi (considered by many as a reincarnation of Meerabai herself) would go into spiritual ecstasy and songs would flow out of her mouth spontaneously. The songs were soaked in the loftiest of bhakti. Sri Dilip Kumar Roy tuned and taught many of them to Smt. M.S. and Smt. Radha, but unfortunately many remained with the music room of Kalki Gardens, shying from a debut on the concert stage. This is one such bhajan. Sri Roy has beautifully set it to Kaafi raga." Unquote

A rough translation for those who may not know Tamizh:

Translation.

Sadasivam and MS are like lotus and water.
MS amma never talked about her charitable acts. Not even by a slip. Why so much? She did not even think ever that she has done it. She lived without that thought.

'For lotus to grow, there should be enough water, pure and clear. For water to be clear, lotus has to grow in it,' says Yoga Vasishtam.

Sadasivam and MS shone like such lotus and water.

Along with Kalidas Samman awarded by M.P. Govt. a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh was also given. On the very day of coming back with it, Sadasivam phoned me and said in his characteristic way, 'Veezhi, why don't you come here for coffee in the morning?'

I went. He wanted me to hand over the cash of Rs. 1 lakh fully to Maha Periyava.

When I mentioned this to Periyava, he said, 'What will I do with cash? Ask him to buy gold with hallmark of King Edward and give.'

In accordance with that, equivalent gold at the rate prevailing then was bought and dedicated to Periyava. (Peruyava made use of that contribution for due charitable activities).

Having accepted the contribution of MS and Sadasivam, Periyava gave in a plate prasad of kunkumam. Beneth the Kunkumam, there was a beautiful chain of gold coins.

After they went, Periyava said, "I took from them gold. I have given it back to them. Since I have given it to them, Sadasivam cannot say to MS,
'Give it to so and so.' Can he?"

Wax melts at around 40 degrees Centigrade. In an airconditioned atmosphere should be possible to support wax works in India.

From The Hindu today (interview with Varadaraju about Sri Ram Seva Mandali, Benagluru)
What is your most unforgettable memory of the music fest when you were a child?

Though there are many memorable occasions, one such event was MS Subbulakshmi’s concert. During those days the concert would start at 7 p.m. and go on till 10 p.m. For her concert, people would come by 4 p.m. and on one occasion it began to rain. There were nearly 2000 people standing in the queue and they didn’t move! By the time the concert concluded we had procured nearly 10,000 folding chairs so that the audience could sit.

Vasanthakokilam --Apropos your note post re: sale of Suprabatham records---an anecdote re: MSAmma's naivete when it came to worldly matters--once in their house in Kotturpuram two artiste sisters(name irrelevant) mentioned that one of their recent cassette releases had sold over 5000 copies. Mami turns to my mother and says with wonderment "5000 copies"--after the artistes had left I had to remind Mami that her records have sold several thousands to which also she replied Appidiya with equal naivete--Mama(TS) always used to joke that " Kunjamma does not even know how many zeros are in a crore of rupees alluding to her charitable contributions"!!!
A noble selfless Nadopasaki to be venerated by successive generations-- a hundred years from now if one comes across her attributes one would swear that such a noble soul could never have existed--thank God there are several archives that have preserved the legacy.

Apropos the messages from MKR and VK I wanted to add an anecdote which adds to what Ramesh Mama had mentioned in post #785.
Those were the days when HMV in the late 80s(as Saregma was then known) was not in the best of financial health due to various reasons.
Whenever there was recording request from my Grandfather at HMV and on some rare occasions this used to be at extremely short notice, whatever recordings were going on used to be hurriedly curtailed and the studio made free for MS. On one such occasion as Grandmother entered she did see the recording room being rearranged for her and the artists (who were indeed extremely delighted to see MS) leaving the studio. On coming to know that the previous recording had been abruptly cut short due to her rescheduled program, she was struck by guilt and asked the person in charge at HMV in a voice filled with sadness "I hope HMV is not losing money because of me" ! #:-s

Cienu: Typical of Patti!!!The amazing thing was that over the 6 decades I had known her, neither her 'naivete' nor her genuine empathy for others had changed a wee bit!!! She was a s clueless about money matters as she was about insincere sycophants who thronged Kalki Gardens and carried "tales" to her--Yet it was Divine will that such a naive person was smart and courageous enough in her early Twenties to entrust herself and her career to Mama(TS). Apparently where it really counted she exercised sound judgement!!!! TJ George's book in my opinion completely failed to highlight this aspect--ofcourse he had not had any direct contact/opportunity to "probe" this aspect.

Back to the Venkatesha Suprabatham. Grandmother and mother had internalised the Suprabatham for over a 6 month period at the Kalki Gardens through rigourous practice under the guidance of Vedic Pandits. The time had finally come to actually record the Suprabatham at HMV. Grandmother was a little hesitant to record the same as of yet and was probably thinking of pushing the date a little. Amma told Patti." I think we should postpone the recording no further. I may not be able to continue for longer ".
And so the recording was done. And a few days after the album was recorded at HMV, yours truly was born :) Hence the name "Srinivasan" .
Whenever some one asks "How many years back was the Venkatesha Suprabatham recorded ? " I just mention my age: ! :)

Folks: The real untold story is how Radha Akka collaborated--when these recordings were in full swing the rehearsals were quite long-- be it kalki gardens or Kotturpuram--Radha had a long "commute"--the rehearsals would be smack in the middle of the day--Radha being a housewife--taking care of her mother-in-law,children(Sekhar/Cienu) and hordes of relatives visiting their house amidst transportation logjams- arriving huffing and puffing for the rehearsals --only to be mildly admonished by MSAmma for being tardy--more out of concern for Kadayanallur venkatraman(who came from perambur by Public transportation and hence the overwhelming empathy on MsAmma's part-when my mother would interject and admonish MSAMMa for not realising how Radha "juggles" her family commitments and manages to spend long hours on rehearsals-( to my mother to this day Radha is her eldest child!!! and would brook no criticism or complaint from ANYBODY!!))-MSAmma would realise and remorsefully turn coyingly sympathetic towards Radha(no mother-daughter rank-pulling here!!!)-- the diligence, sincerity and adherence to discipline must be seen to be believed and if the recordings turned out to be smashing successes it was no fluke--a far cry from the present recording accoutrements---that some of the rehearsals took place with the cards session in the background- TS Mama and friends-with SSI being fetched from Royapettah--the Car service had priority for SSI than for Radha to come for the rehearsals(and most often Radha's "alleged tardiness" was due to the transportation snafus surrounding the other card participants--WHOever has heard of a "Club" sending transportation to its card members overriding all other domestic needs and contingencies!!!!

So many stories for Radha's stoicism and sense of humor amidst serious musical sessions!! The Mother-Daughter rapport and collaboration were as much factors in the success of their endeavours as was Mama's vision and idealism --In my opinion NO ONE -including Mama--understood MSAmma as well as Radha did and the sacrifices she has made. I consider myself lucky to have seen the many facets of her personality--the impish, the diplomat, housewife managing daily chores battling servants, children(!!) and yet sport a public persona--come show time--- unfazed by the trials and tribulations that usually precede the public appearances-always ready with a witty repartee before a celebrity's comment enthralling onlookers. You cannot catch her making an insensitive remark or a criticism no matter what the temptation or provocation may have been!!
Memories,memories--they are the 'spice" of life!!!

Sorry for the digression!! I just wanted to give a backdrop to the myriad successes of MSAmma

Did MS sing any composition of SS in Sankarabharanam other than Saroja Dala Netri?

I wish it was possible to convert the Kalki gardens into a memorial. At least, a vidoe of the house may be taken and preserved along with all the photos available. In the Tributes to MS site, it may be archived.

Kalki Garden: Once the residence of Bharat Ratna Smt.M.S.Subbulakshmi. The Tulasi Madam and the Krishna statue are still preserved. In the piano room, we learn that, all the songs of the film Meera were choreographed and tuned. Later when Kalki Krishnamurthy joined Mr.Sadasivam, the magazine Kalki got published from this house. Now Maharishi Vidya Mandir has taken possession of this house. Ladies hostel is being run here and the school building has been erected by the side. The heritage house has at present escaped demolition due to stay order of the court.
