Re: Thiruvarur Swaminathan@chromepet-vasantha mantap onJan 0
Chromepet certainly suits me atleast during a working day . This is the second concert that I am attending here at chromepet. Thiruvarur Swaminathan , I google to see that he is the disciple of shri ramani . His concert had a lot of mAli like touchpoints incidentally the songlist was of the order of a typical flute concert .This is also my first experience of listening to Thiruvarur Swaminathan.
The concert started late by 30 mins and there were 4 percussion artist apart from the violinst M Vijay. 4 Percussion artists can get into a laya over drive mode and it was the case during kAmbOdhi varnam and to an extent during gnb hamsadhwani krithi rendition. I particularly liked his fast fingering that produced great nadham with real sharp cuts in hamsadhwani.
In small sabhas you tell the artist and the feedback will be instantaneously corrected . Many were bit worried with the slight high sound and few were also bit not happy with all 4 percussion artist playing at the same time . WHen that was communicated the 4 artists did realize the feedback and they really took turns to play and the sound was adjusted well . Particularly happy with Madipakkam suresh- the mrudangam artist who kind of lead the whole show tackling the sound . Kudos to these artists in incorporating instant feedback changes , which will never happen in big sabhas- the proximity of rasikas and artists helps.
The shree ragam pancharatnam was lovely. YOu have myriad of artists taking entarO mahanubHavurlu in so many ways - some very leisurely like MDR , some with an impetus on pronouciation and tone like balamurali . But it was played in a faster mode like a typical semmangudi mama. While I was thinking if flute artist can play in full the pancharatnam, it was not the case . The flute artist rotated sangathis with the violinist vijay. It was indeed a nice presentation and the pick for me .
THe sub main simm madhyamam was a bit of mixed bag , i could sense the laya camraderie of 4 slightly taking over the only flute and the violin . The navarasa kannada filler is a flute speciality and here the fingers really moved fast especially the phrase kannu laku nOni ?? , the audience all enjoyed . The main in madhyamavati was kind of played well in parts, little more leisurely blow to start with in madhyamavati alapana would have been better . However in the krithi with neraval and swaras swaminathan made up well.
M Vijay- the sishya of varadarajan played very well especially the pancharatna krithi where he had the most time to showcase his violin. The 4 percussionist were good , liked especially the ghatam artist . Though they got audience feedback where they indeed took turns to play , but for almost all the songs where towards the end of each song when all of them joined it was a high percussion assault that drained my attention and the volume was quite high at times.
(Un?)fortunately i am in the minimal bracket who at times prefers ksgopalakrishnan serene flute more than faster style of Legendary Flute Mali - atleast that was the mood that I had . I wish there were longer blows with more serenity and sowkhyam , but for the whole concert ,the "ayurveda factor" was just very minimal. I was there till the first half of tani had to leave - the late start of half an hour could have been avoided.
Overall a good to very good concert for 1 hour and 40 mins that I listened.
