Uncouth behavior of Carnatic Critic

Post by sureshvv »

So this Carnatic Critic walks into the hall, heads all the way to the first row led by the fawning organizer and seats himself there with the concert already in progress. After a couple of songs, even before the sub-main he gets up and walks out of the concert.

Thought this was both highly unprofessional and inconsiderate. The organizers should discourage such behavior from the critics (or even VIP rasikas).

What the poor critic will do when he is pressed with concerts all over and day long. May be under the impression ஒரு பானை சோத்துக்கு ஒரு சோறு பதம் [Taste of one cooked rice will decide the quality of the cooking ] As Shri Nick puts in 'shame' if it was published. This is the regular feature I presume. Organizers are responsible and must be careful in extending invitation and entertaining such people

If he is unsure that he will stay for a significant portion of the concert, he should sit in a place where he can leave discretely. Many of the Hindu critics do that. If he wants to bulldoze his way to the front row, he should stay put.

THERE ARE SEVERAL INSTANCES OF CRITICS WRIITING ABOUT ITEMS NOT SUNG IN CONCERTS OR MIS STATING THE SONGS , RAGAS ETC. I DON'T HAVE TIME BUT ONE GLARING INSTANCE WAS A FAMOUS QURRELSOME MUSICIAN WAITED FOR THE CRITIC TO LEAVE A M.A. CONCERT- THE PROGRAM THERE USED TO BE PUBLISHED- & RENDERED ITEMS OTHER THAN THE ONES IN THE PROGRAM. THE CRITIC WAS NOT ASHAMED AT BEING EXPOSED & WROTE ANOTHER ARTICLE CRITICISING THE MUSICIAN FOR CHANGING THE PROGRAM!.....VKV

There is an interesting story about the Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman , and his first performance in London after the second world war .
The London Times critic in his weekly review column wrote - Coming Sunday , the London cognoscenti will converge at ... Hall , to hear the Guarneri violin being played , and not the violinist who fought against us in the war .
On the day of the concert the artist played his first piece to a standing ovation .
Immediately after that the maestro broke the violin into two using his knees and threw it to the corner .
Saying
" And that was a fake which I bought at Picadilly for 5 pounds yesterday . And now for those who are really interested in the Guarneri , I shall continue to play on my authentic one ..... "
He continued playing to a stunned audience ... :-@

No wonder Toscanini used to hate them fiercely , calling them Assasins !!!
