I had attended Smt. Nagavalli Nagaraj's concert couple of weeks ago in Detroit. Pretty Good. If you are a Kannadiga or a Kannada lover, you will more than enjoy her concert since she includes a number of Dasa Saahitya especially Shri Purandaradasa. She also sang the usual krithis by Shri Thyagaraja, Shri Harikeshanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar etc.
It would be great if some one can take the initiative and make an MP3 recording of the concert (after obtaining prior permission from the artiste) so that it can be posted on Sangeethapriya. That way we can publicize her and give her the exposure she richly deserves.
Shri Lakshman probably has her email address. May be he can share it with "RAMAKRIYA" so that the later can get the permission to record the concert.
I think that we should make an effort to promote some of the singers from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. I feel that since Chennai somehow became the epicenter of Karntik music, the other two sister states (and of course Kerala) have lagged a bit and in order to preserve and foster CM in states other than TN, we should perhaps run an extra mile or two to bring forth the concert quality talent in those states.
Thanks.
PS: By the way, talking of concerts by Kannadigas, Shri Vidyabhushana is in USA and just finished one concert in Detroit. I think he also did a concert in Boston, Rochester, NY and one is planned in Kalamazoo, Michigan today. One more private concert coming up tomorrow in Detroit Metro area - which I hope to attend. If any one is interested in his schedule, I can find out from him tomorrow (Thursday) and post it here. Thanks again.

meena,
Give me some time. It was a wonderful concert, enjoyed by all. I will post a list, and some of my observations probably later tonight. I don't think I am qualified enough to write a 'real review' of such a great team! It had a very good mix of Mysore composer's kritis.

Violin: Sri Hemmige. V. Srivathsan
Mridanga : Sri Shriram Brahmanandam
This was a thematic concert, with bulk of the compositions coming from the Mysore composers. approximately 3 hours long. Here is a list of songs:
( R ) -> rAgAlApane ( S ) - swara kalpane (N ) neraval ( T) tani Avartane (O) Raga outline
1. chalamEla darbAr Adi
2. gaM gaNapatE hamsadhvani Adi (trishra naDe) muttayya bhAgavatar (S)
3. chintayAmi jagadambA himdOLa mishra jhampe jayachAmarAja oDeyaru (R, S)
4. sogasugA mRdanga srIranjani rUpaka tyAgarAja ( N, S)
5. gurukRpA lEka pushpalatika trishra rUpaka maisUru vAsudEvAchArya
6. rA rA rAjIvalOchana mOhana Adi maisUru vAsudEvAchArya ( R, S, T )
7. nIrE nIkaretAre dEsh Adi purandara dAsa (O)
8. uLLavaru shivALayava shuddhasAvEri khanDa chApu basavaNNa (vachana)
9. sangIta samsAravANi panchakalyANi (rAgamAlike) Adi shatAvadhAni Dr.R Ganesh
10. kRshNanA koLalina sindhU bhairavi Adi pu.ti.na (O)
11. nAnoru viLayATTu navarasakannaDa ? pApanAsam sivan (O)
12. hari kuNidAnamma kuntalavarALi Adi purandara dAsa
13. varalIla gAnalOla shankarAbharaNa Adi (trishra naDe) tyAgarAja
14. tAm tAm taka shuddasAvEri Adi nAgavalli nAgarAj
15. pavamAna and shAradA bhujanga stOtra last verse in madhyamAvati
The varNa in darbAr and the hamsadhvani kriti gave a brisk start to theconcert. Dr Nagavalli rendered a soulful hindOla rAgAlApane. The ease with which she traverses three-sthAyis should be seen to be believed. Srivatsan's rendering of Hindola was equally good. She chose to sing the not-so-commonly-sung chintayAmi jagadambA of Maharaja Jayachamaraja Odeyar. The kalpana svaras both by the vocalist and violinist were outstanding. IMO, few avarthas of mandra sthAyi swaras, provided a sharp contrast adding melody. For the srIranjani kriti, the neraval line was at 'navarasa yuta kritichE bhajiyinche', and was executed very well.
Singing Sri Vasudevacharya's compositions being her specialty, she chose to sing a relatively less heard gurukRpa lEka in pushpalatikA, and then followed with an excellent mOhana AlApane with rA rA rAjIva lOchana, and rounded it off with kalpana swaras. This was the main item of the concert, where rAga development and the kriti was taken at a leisurely pace, in line with the kAla pramANa of the kriti, and took almost a third of the concert time. The tani by Sriram thereafter left the listeners spellbound.
Post main item, several compositions were presented, which included both popular items as well as some new compositions. The first item was the traditional nIre nI karetAre, a lively composition of purandhara dAsa in dEsh. This was followed by the Basavanna vachana 'uLLavaru shivAlaya mADuvaru '.The first part of the vachana was sung like a free verse, and was very touching. In the nibadhha part of the vachana, it was wonderful to see Shriram playing with such sensitivity to the bhAva,even though (AFAIK) he does not know kannaDa.
Later, she sang one of popular composition from pu.ti.na's musical play, gOkula nirgamana, after seeing the poet's daughter among the audience.
The panchakalyANi rAgamAlike was a very interesting. Penned by ShatavadhAni Ganesh, and set to music by Nagavalli, it had kalyANi, mOhana kalyANi, hamIr kalyANi, pUrvi kalyANi and yamunA kalyANi, with rAga mudre for all the rAgas. Selection of kuntalavarALi for 'hari kuNidAnamma' was very apt, for the mood of the song.
She concluded the concert with a bright vara lIla gAna lOla, and one of her own compositions, a tillAna in shuddha sAveri.
The tillAna had some laya intricacies which yours truly enjoyed very much but not able to explain

Throughout the concert, the good rapport between the artists could be seen, and that added a lot of value to the concert. Bay area is really fortunate to have such talented professionals as our own 'local artists'

Nagavalli's bhAva and sAhitya shuddha are perfect, and it was evident in the way she does padacchEda.
If she is performing in your area, do not miss her concert.

It is an invention for me to know that I have a mudra - Vallisha & also desciple of Maharajapuram Santhanam ! I am a deciple of Dr.Nagavalli Nagaraj in music & I dont use any mudra in my compositions for the simple reason that it distracts yhe total poetic ambience of the song. How ever my abbreviated name raaga (raaya Ganesh) may frequently find a place in those songs for it is natural to have raga in songs. Of course the word raaga has several meanings in Sanskrit. Vallisha for your kind information is the name of my music teacher's house. It accidentally happened for me to peep in to these sites. I am very happy towards the enthusiastic participation. How ever some of the blogs can be more deeper & impartial irrespective of the musician & His/Her State/Language.
