Amrita Murali for Nadopasana Music Trust, 27/01/2014
Venue: Raga Sudha, Luz
Amrita Murali - vocal
R Hemalatha - violin
Mannarkoil J Balaji - mridangam
First things first - a sumptuous feast, musically. That was what it was. Quite a decent crowd but by the time of nereval in s'baranam, it has thinned down considerably.
Now the song list.
slOkam in nAttai
vanajAkshA (varnam) - rItigowlai - k ata - vInai kuppaiyer
undEdi rAmudu - harikAmbhOji - rUpakam - T (raga sketch, ns@kshEma karudu tyAgarAja)
janani natajanaparipAlini - sAvEri - Adi - SS (rs@janani), mridangam was so full of sowkyam and elevated this to ethereal heights. especially the way he filled the avartanam between end of pallavi and anupallavi, anupallavi and charanam. if one were to say something is quintessentially CM, sAvEri it would be.
EHi trijagadIsa - sArangA - m cApu - T. this is T in MD mode, this sAranga is better then the nIvAda and EmitOva but doesn't seem to be in circulation that much?
vInAbhEri - AbhEri - Adi - MD
Emi nEramu - sankarAbharanam - Adi - T (rns@dhInabandhuvani dEvadEvudani, t). what an alapanai and repartee. Kudos to the vidushis, so serene a sankarabharanam
brndAvana lolanE - kApi - Adi - PD
eRumayilEri viLaiyAdu mugam vizhikkuth thuNai thiru (thiruppugazh) as virutham in behAg, sindhubhairavi

It was a lovely concert. I see her regularly as audience member, which sets an example to other performers and students, but somehow have missed all her concerts for a long time. Happy to put that right this evening.

The tillana TSK's, I believe. It was also in sindhubhairavi.
Concert was subdued and brilliant.

+1 to thatif one were to say something is quintessentially CM, sAvEri it would be

A wonderful concert. The Saveri, Saranga and Sankarabharanam pieces were just too brilliant, with the less-often-heard kritis being the icing on top!

1. Right from the Carnatica's festival in November where she started with "Rama nee samanam", I have been witnessing a vastly more refined, precise and subdued presentation in her concerts. Sedhukki vecha madiri sangathigal. Saw it pretty much all through the season also.
2. Neraval at Undethi Ramudu was outstanding with such clarity of sahityam. Really set the mood for rest of the concert.
3. Dr. Hemalatha seemed a bit distracted during the initial part of the Saveri alapana but was sharp as ever soon after.
4. Balaji provided exquisite support without crowding the vocalist. Thani could have been a bit longer and more involved/exciting.

Out of station & therefore missed the concert. I have heard her atleast dozen times in the last couple of years in different venues. I have no doubt she will emerge as a solid classical carnatic musician like Vedavalli,Parasalla Ponnammal & other veterans. Has assimilated Semmangudi padantharam from a very competent Semmangudi disciple Kedharam Sir.On her own she has added to her repertoire. I have evn heard her sing Varugalammo beautifully.

I must confess I started listening to Amritha Murali only very recently, that too through archived files.
I found her music has abundant saukhyam.
My own analysis is that she has a God-given "melodic equipoise" in her delivery, irrespective of what she is singing, be it octave or tempo or briga. That will stand her in very good stead when she develops her mandharma music. And someone who knows these things well tells me she chooses rare krithis and renders them very well, guided by SSP and such. So a rich package indeed!
(she also plays the violin, having trained under T Rukmini).
