Ramanathapuram C. S. Murugabhoopathy (February 14, 1914 — March 21, 1998), popularly referred to as CSM, was one of the most distinguished Mridanga maestros of the 20th century. He was a contemporary of Palghat Mani Iyer (1912–1981) and Palani Subramania Pillai (1908–1962). The three legends are revered as the "Holy Trinity of Mridanga"

CSM improvised the left hand playing technique with innovative movements of split fingers. He was renowned for his unmatched sense of pitch, tonal purity and meaningful silent pauses while following the main artiste. Clarity even during very high speed renditions was one of the hallmarks of his thani aavarthanes (solos). CSM also developed many unique patterns and lessons and established a new playing style. Some of his notable students include Mavilekkara Shankarakutty Nair, Karaikudi Krishnamurthy (Singapore & London), Kumbakonam Premkumar (AIR Delhi), and B. Druvaraj (Bangalore). His most famous student was the Khanjira wizard G. Harishankar (AIR Madras). The Mridanga trinity influenced one another and drew inspiration by listening to one another. It is a fact that Palani Subramania Pillia, who rarely played the Khanjira in live concerts (although he was extremely good at it), played on a Khanjira only with two Mridangists. One of course was Palghat Mani Iyer and the other was C S Murugabhoopathy.

Best wishes! Glad to hear about the centenary celebrations of one of the greats from the last century.
I was fortunate to have heard him live on a few occasions (accompanying Somu and TNS also).

I happened to be visiting Lalgudi's house on the day that CSM passed away in 1998. He was giving a recorded interview for AIR that day, a condolence message for CSM. He narrated some very moving incidents from their musical journeys together. LGJ articulated (in ways beyond what was possible for a mere mortal to conceive) how much he has learned from sharing the stage with the great CSM. How I wish I could have recorded what he said that day!

Another person to add to the list of his notable students is the mridanga vidwan Chennai Thyagarajan.

Great work, Gamakam, Venkat & Parivadini! Are you webcasting the event?

Very very best wishes ! As usual I am not in Madras when there's an important event :(.

I am fortunate to have a few recollections of the great CSM. I have listened to him live in a few Madurai Somu concerts in the 70's. The naadam of his mridangam would linger in the ears well after one went home. Of course the great Somu's constant and poignant appreciation of CSM's playing made sure one never forgot about it. Wonderful artist Somu...wonderful artist CSM... Again in the 70's I've visited him in his house on Katcheri Road, a few houses from my grandfather's house, accompanying my uncle who knew him. Only remember him as the quintessentially dignified man, bespectacled and serious.

A quick(and quirky) anecdote concerning CSM. CSM was an exceptionally dignified man but was slightly in the shadows in the Fifties(behind PMI amd PSP)--In the fifties my Father arranged GNB with CSM in Bombay as all the other combinations--GNB/PMI/PSP/Raghu had been tried. Both of them were hosted in our flat in Bombay and I was an awe-struck errand boy. supposed to be "ministering to their creature comforts!!- GNB--a great raconteur and an "agent-provocateur"--they were exchanging some friendly barbs against each other when at the end GNB sighs "Appane Muruga Ennai Mattum Kappattu(Oh Muruga please protect me alone!!). CSM gets rattled and says What about me in Tamil--GNB says Nan Irukkene Ungalai Kappatta!! and they both had a hearty laugh!!

Have heard several concerts with Madurai Somu,Chittoor and Madurai Mani Iyer-he maintained an unique style with emphasis on Sukham--one of the easiest Artiste-Guest I have seen in my life--epicurean in his own way but adapted himself to whatever the host prepared--absolutely no fuss or ego-display--I recall vividly a ram-rod posture, broad forehead with a rich sprinkling of Vibhuti,a thick neck like Nadaswaram Vidwans--intimidating but gentle as a lamb--in terms of sartorial preferences I would place him between PMI(Extremely spartan) and PSP(immaculate and yet simple except for the best Javvadu --the dazzling Diamond ear-studs and Golden Chain--thick-- with dark--undyed -- hair ---the "combing of which would take atleast half an hour and the finished product will be a delight to watch--nary a stray hair! even after the performance is over.

I know I am getting carried away--they were truly giants who adorned the stage they played in and respected the audience no matter how poorly informed we all were in those days when it came to Laya and I consider myself so lucky to have been close to them in my formative impressionable years!!

memories!! memories!!

Superb talk by TNS on CSM ; detailing the sollukattus employed by CSM. TNS mentioning that CSM accompanied by TNS based on LGJ's recommendation for the Krishna Gana Sabha concert and TNS mentioning that he tried to sing to meet the expectations of the stalwarts on stage !! TNS concerts with CSM and Harishankar are a treat to listen; the widely talked about CSM accompaniment of TNS for Ka Va Va (Varali) on Papasam Sivan day concert at Sastri hall.
