Re: yArige yAruNTu - purandara dAsa
yArigE yAruNTu eravina saMsAra | - who's there here for helping anyone else, it is a problematic (/borrowed, not your own) world
nIramElaNa guLE nijavalla hariyE || pa || - life on earth is like a bubble on water, it is not true(=permanent) Oh Hari!
bAyAritu endu bhAvinIrigE pOdE | - feeling thirsty, I went to the well for water
bhAvili jalabatti baridAytu hariyE || 1 || - the water in the well evaporated and emptied out (not satisfying my thirst)
bisilu tALade marada nEraLigE pOdE | - unable to bear the sun, i went to the tree for shade
mara baggi shirada mElOragitu hariyE || 2 || - the tree leaned and fell on my head (hurting me rather than givine me shade)
aDaviyOL manEmADi giDakE toTTilakaTTi | - I made my home in the forest, and tied the baby's cradle to a tree branch
toTTilina shishuvE mAyavAyitu hariyE || 3 || - but alas, the baby in the cradle disappeared
tande SrIpurandara viThala nArAyaNa | - Oh lord sri Purandara Vitthala, Narayana, my father!
nA sAyO hOttigE nI kAyO hariyE || 4 || - at the moment when I die, please save me, dear Hari!
as you can see, this song is a very melancholic song stating that life on earth is futile and unrewarding, and only God can save us.

Sachi,
Thanks for the prompt response. Is there any specific context for the third caraNa?

Not that I know of. In the ocean of Purandaradasa kritis, there are many of a sombre nature, and there are no recorded contexts.
I think this song resonates for those stuck in a bad place in life and tells them 'life is just that' and they should seek salvation through devotion.

Thanks Sachi,
It is indeed the heart's true yearning after exhausting the search of samsara for happiness. I have posted the Tamil translation of this kRti.

Reminded me of the lullaby 'Rock-a-bye baby'...I have always felt that this was a most inappropriate lullaby...Rsachi wrote:aDaviyOL manEmADi giDakE toTTilakaTTi | - I made my home in the forest, and tied the baby's cradle to a tree branch
toTTilina shishuvE mAyavAyitu hariyE || 3 || - but alas, the baby in the cradle disappeared
Rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
And down will come baby, cradle and all

Just checked...this lullaby has uncertain origins, but a definite lead is that when the white men went to America, they saw the native Indian women rock their babies in birch bark cradles suspended from tree branches so that the wind rocked the cradles.
