INJIKUDI SUBRAMANIAM Nagaswaram@Sri KrishnaGanaSabha:13 Jan'

Post by Sivaramakrishnan »

Sri Injikudi E M Subramaniam at Pongal Nagaswara Isai Vizha: Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, T Nagar, Chennai: 13 Jan 2014

The inaugural function which started at 5.10 p.m. was presided over by Sri Nalli Kuppusami Chetty- the Grand Patron of Fine Arts. In his address, he recollected the initiative of the late Yegnaraman, founder president of the Sabha in introducing an exclusive festival for Nagaswara music which has now become an important event in the cultural calendar of Tamilnadu. Justice Ramasubramaniam who was the Chief Guest described the significance of Fine arts in human life and the greatness of nagaswaram which brings joy to any occasion. Key note address was given by noted scholar Dr B M Sundaram under whose guidance Subramaniam is presently doing a research project.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of this year's ‘Sangeetha Choodamani’ award to Injikudi Subranmaniam which carries a citation and a purse of Rs.1 lakh. Sri Y Prabhu of Krishnan gana sabha read out the citation and Sri. B M Sundaram handed over the award.

A visibly moved and humble Subramaniam dedicated the award to his parents, Gurus and the art of Nagaswaram. Herecollected the advice of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman and Sri Yegnaraman several years ago at the very venue that he must pursue the art seriously. He also remembered his association with the film Sringaram (this film won the National Award for best music director for Lalgudi a few years ago).

Sri Lalgudi G J R Krishnan was present at the function and concert.
The inaugural session was most appropriately followed by Injikudi subramaniam’s concert.

Nagaswaram Sri. INJIKUDI E. M. SUBRAMANIAM
Sri. Chandrasekharan :Nagaswara support
Tavil (names of the two artists could not be noted down)
(One right- hander and another left- hander)
Concert from 6.35 p.m. onwards (I left by 9.00 p.m.)

1. Madhukauns- Varnam
2. Simhavahini-Nenarunchara-Tyagaraja-Aadi (with a few rounds of swaraprastara)
3. Mandari-Ninnuchepakaarana-Tyagaraja-Aadi (Brief aalapana & kriti with swaras)
4. Naatakapriya-Geeta vadya natana Nataka priye(Tanjore sankara Iyer-Aadi)- Main item with leisurely aalaapana, kriti and swara prastaara at pallavi
followed by Tani.
5. Yaman kalyani aalaapana (with occasional 'Shehnai style' interludes)
(Possibly followed by Krishna nee beganey baaro) (I left after the aalaapana - Could anyone fill up the remaining menu?)

The concert was quite sober and Injikudi played with restraint for kritis to ensure saahitya fidelity. Tavil accompaniment was also good.

I felt Subramaniam selected Geeta vadya natana Nataka priye (as main) for the following reasons(It could be even incidental!!):
1. Extolling the greatness of Goddess Ambaal, the divine patron of fine arts
2. Reverence to the Composer from whom also Injikudi has received lessons.
3. Acknowledging the services of Krishna gana sabha which has been promoting the four categories of arts: Geeta /vadya /natana /naataka (they also conduct a drama festival in summer billed as kodai naataka vizha !)

A good listening experience on Pongal eve! Audience turnout was satisfactory. I had the pleasure of our forumite CRama's company.
The Nagaswara vizha is on till 16.1.2014 @ 3 concerts per evening.

I was told that the piece that followed the Yaman alapana was a Meera Bhajan made famous by Lata Mangeshkar. Possibly the same one referred to earlier in the speech by Mr. Sivakumar, The Hindu's music reviewer, who said that Shri. Subramaniam once played that song as if he had hidden a shehnai inside his nagaswaram.

To me this item was the highlight of the concert!

Udumalpet M Angusami and Gangaikondacholapuram N Sudarsan were the tavil players. The latter was on the right as you faced the stage.

And the sound balancing for the concert was excellent.
In fact Nagaswara melam is more enjoyable without any amplification. It restricts the freedom of the artists.
