Today I heard a bhairavi
It was as if bhairavi is a whole entire language and you can say and do anything in bhairavi... you can laugh, cry, philosophize, get serious, get down and dirty, even burp or fart!
It was just amazing!!

Re: Today I heard a bhairavi
That part is accurate but seems like a minor detail
Talking about a song list seems even more pointless.
Wish I had the words to elaborate.
The bhairavi was so free flowing and included the entire gamut of emotions, sometimes cooing in pleasure, sometimes shrieking in pain, sometimes gloating in determination. It seemed boundless and not subject to any rules, as if anywhere his voice went had to be within the realm of bhairavi. It seemed possible that every sound that could likely emanate from a human could be in bhairavi even if it were yawning or blowing one's nose.
It was a concert at a small temple with most of the audience sitting on the floor, many without the benefit of a jamakkalam. Many youngsters in the crowd though they were all texting each other.

Re: Today I heard a bhairavi
The bhairavi, for the artist's standard, was not upto the mark. May be a small temple with open around and "not so proper" acoustics must have made the bhairavi "less" enjoyable. It was like screaming in the higher octaves.
The previous kAmbodhi, mAA jAnaki was also not soothing. the neraval is ok.
Somehow, I could not forget the artists' mohanam last year in the same year "ezunthalE jAnaki".
suresh- Hope I still maintain the secret and going in the right direction

For the bhairavi alapana:
There was quite a bit of real visceral screaming.
Soothing was definitely not on the agenda

Re: Today I heard a bhairavi
Sanjay has various ways of finishing off an alapana.
Sometimes he fakes left and shoots right, like when singing Kalyani or Kapi, switching to some lighter Hindustani phrases to produce the aha moment.
Sometimes he goes for the three point slice, reserving an esoteric sangathi for the end, like when singing Kambodhi or Dhanyasi, and you get left blindsided.
Sometimes he puts on the transition play, reeling off sangathis from various kritis in quick succession to keep you breathless from keeping up.
Yesterday he went for the slam dunk, letting loose some incredible lung power scaling the entire bhairavi spectrum.

Re: Today I heard a bhairavi
This is quite a strange thread though pregnant with intriguing possibilities. One is not quite sure where sureshvv is taking us. Is he blindsiding us, faking left and shooting right, throwing us a tantalising morsel, waiting for a panting reaction, then throwing a bone, but playing mostly close to his chest ? While the rest of us are yapping around excitedly in anticipation, gssastrigal does a fair imitation of a wet blanket. Which gets everyone even more confused about the originator's primary intent.
In sum this has to be the best Bhairavi ever heard in history, or through some peculiarly coded logic embedded in the subtext, the reverse could be intended. Well there you go, sureshvv, why don't you put us out of our misery and spill the beans ? After all we are not talking about any old johnny cum lately, but a musician whose concerts are always awaited with bated breath. Anyone who can talk of music in terms of laughing, crying, nose blowing, belching and breaking wind, must have gone through a heroin rush of mindblowing proportions.

Re: Today I heard a bhairavi
I know this is unusual for this thread. So, let me spill the.....
Sanjay Subramanyan
Vardarajan
Srimushnam Raja Rao
Alamelu mangApuram AnjanEya temple, Mylapore.
Date - 7th Feb
I entered the temple when he was about to start "nannu vidachi"
Nannu vidachi- Ritigowla-T
mA jAnaki - kAmbodhi - "N"- rAjarAjavara rajIvAkasha" (s)
detailed - Bhairavi- bAla gOpAla- bairavi- MD - "S" in drOna karna.
Vrittam goes like this "jAnAbi rAma" in sahAna followed by "vamdhanamu" - T
Ahiri- "bhakti mudalam avarkkul" - is it "pAsuram" in kanjI varadaraAja perumAl. ?? (Ahiri, Saranaga & Surutti)
bOghindra sayInam- kundalavarali- ST. (request by the organiser)
mAlasai kObam- mAnd- Tiruppugazh.
Mangalam
Suresh already reviewed this. He can fill the first coupld of kritis. Sanjay was putting all his efforts, as usual, to make this as memorable concert. But somehow, he did not steal (?) my heart.
In a stone throwing distance, in Adyar, Bombay Jaishree with Embar and Manoj and AA was rendering lalitha (Hiranmayim) and Abheri (nagumomu). I thought of swapping these kritis and thought of sanjay singing.. How Yummy that should have been ??

Re: Today I heard a bhairavi
Malasai kobam was in jonpuri.
Before the reethigowlai alapana, there was
1. Sri raga varnam
2. Jaya jaya, nattai
3. Polla puliyinum, mayamalavagowla, sivan
The slokam was "jaanati rama".
The song that followed it was from Adaikkala pathu of vedanta desikar.
@sirssub11: Found your conspiracy theory
quite funny. I enjoyed the concert and especially the bhairavi immensely. Nothing gets close to the carnatic rush!
Following up that dangerous & heart wrenching foray into the unknown abysses of bhairavi with that truly tested and tried Balagopala was quite a relief. No other kriti could have calmed ones nerves more effectively.

Re: Today I heard a bhairavi
vvsuresh,
For someone who finally has been weaned away from her indifference to the grand rAgA, wondered how this 'roller coaster ride' of a bhairavi would have sounded to me. I suppose I would have been very happy with an all sweeping Bhairavi like the one in the temple, because I owe it to Sanjay for making Bhairavi more palatable for me over the years, distancing it away from my unfortunately childhood-formed prejudice about the mighty rAgA, which I used to think was a big boring rAgA
Sirsub,

Also, as part of nannu vidachi, he sang single aavarathana swaras for ramayya rama, kothandarama, pattabhirama & kalyanarama!
