Your feedback on Halls/Venues you visited during Margazhi'13

Post by Rsachi »

Dear rasikas,
It's survey time again.
Please take a few minutes to rate the various venues/sabha halls you attended concerts/recitals/programmes in during the recent Margazhi 2013 season in Chennai.

There are sections for rating the venues and also giving your qualitative comments.

:) Don't worry, its anonymous. We will publish the results in one month! :)

Take care, and have a happy Sankranti=Pongal!

Friends, I have received some high quality responses. Thanks.
However, I expected a much larger number of people to respond, given the many reports here of concert attendance during the season.
Kindly take a few minutes of your valuable time and respond. Otherwise the efforts to create and analyse the survey would go rather futile.

Having visited rather few halls this year, I gave a limited response.

Being outside chennai, I get to attend very few concerts. Still, I have participated in giving my feedback for Margazhi 2013. Hope sabhas get a good idea of what rasikas want. Keep up the good work Sri Rsachi.

Dear rasikas
The number of responses is too low to make statistical significance. I request more responses, and a couple of minutes is all it takes!

Responded. Everything is happening in Mylapore & T Nagar belt. Therefore it will be nice if Srinivasa Sastri Hall for mikeless concert & Bharat Vidya Bhavan are demolished to build high quality Halls with world class Sound system. Music Academy should demolish the mini hall & rebuild gain for mikeless concerts.Everything about Mylapore Fine Arts is wrong. The entire management should step down.Read the Sruti Blog by Sujatha Vijayaraghavan.

Perhaps we should, in the the same vein, have posts for Best and Worst. It may not be as scientific as a survey, but I'm sure it would be quite active.

Mostly, I only go to halls that I like. That means that my contribution to any survey is severely weighted.

Sachi,
I've filled in the survey. Hope more do before it closes.

KNV,
Thanks for mentioning Sujatha V's' post in the Sruti blog.

And, thanks to Sujatha Vijayaraghavan for voicing her frustration over a pitiable incident like this.

Strangely enough, I would have written about it the very same day (when I was getting sicker every minute and had to abandon the idea of sitting with my laptop and writing about it when my body was weak and mind couldn't think clearly).

In spite of being unwell, I went to the venue and was stopped at the gate with a simple 'sold out' by the watchman. Seeing the office bearer (we are acquainted), I said, 'let me talk to him'. I was greeted politely (iron fist in a velvet glove, I gathered soon).

Knowing that the evening program would have sold out, I said, "Oh no! I'm here only for this concert. I would like to buy a ticket, please!"
"Sorry", came the reply. "You know, people go in and stay on!"
"Wait a minute! I'm not going to do that! You know me, and I'll be out soon after this concert! Don't you trust me?"
"I can't make exceptions!"
"This is unfair! He's going to be deprived of a decent number of audience too because of this!"
Again, iron fist in a velvet glove. I was sent out :(

I used to be irked when a hall would be vacated at some sabhas for the evening programs, even when I attended both concerts. That seems fair now, compared to this.
I guess a number of us went through this experience that afternoon, and returned home dejected. And the artistes on stage! What kind of an atmosphere it was for them to perform in!

All in all, a bad show!

And now, for something positive :)

After seeing my face year after year at ticket counters, some sabha folks are even cordial, and make no fuss about our ticket transaction. I look forward to seeing them too, every year.
The highlight of such experience this season is as follows:

I went to German Hall a day ahead of IFA's inauguration and the office bearers were not there. When I phoned them, they asked if I could go to their office nearby. I did, they were friendly as usual, I got my tickets and walked out. On reaching the maddeningly busy street, I could not find the driver at the gate. I waited a while, and the women I met I met upstairs saw me at the busy intersection, were concerned and were kind enough to introduce me to the watchman who offered me a seat! Since the driver was a new one that day, I did not have his number. After a while, I went upstairs to their office again, and they all got busy trying to get me the number somehow on their cell phones, and they did! One of the two kind women (a vainikA) made sure that I was safely sent away in the car. Had I not taken ill, I would have gone to her concert. Next season, hopefully.

For a city which conducts nearly 2000+ concerts in Dec we still don't have a world class auditorium covering all the questions raised by Sachi in his survey. And there is one central place where all these & more can be done. Can build different sized halls. Plenty of parking facility. Quality restaurants. Saree shopping. Handicrafts. Any guess. One clue. High command blessing is required.

KNV,
Good ideas! If only they are blessed by the top honchos...

Got this bit of information today (I'm going back to the shabby handling by that Mylapore Sabha at a 4-00 clock concert. My frustration and annoyance at the insensitive behavior a

They 'had' ticketed the programs separately but were not allowing anyone in X(

The place is Kamrajar Arangam property owned by Congress party. Huge property. Centrally located. Will be connected by Metro in couple of years. Wish Congressmen from Tamilnadu atleast do this.
