CONCERTS FROM ANANTHAPADMANABHASWAMY TEMPLE- ADYAR

Post by CRama »

Grand music concerts were held in the Ananthapadmanabha swamy temple Adyar as a part of the Annual Brahmotsavam featuring top class artistes and upcoming artistes. The concerts were also webcast. I came to know about the webcast much later and I could watch only three concerts which I thought it fit to share among the forumites. I did not take any notes. Hence I would have skipped a couple of songs.

It was very kind of the temple for webcasting the concerts. But the time schedule was only for the notice. The concert which is scheduled to start from 7.15PM would start past 8 PM. But I will be faithfully watching the PC to catch the music from the scheduled time. The concerts used to end by 9 or 9.30 PM. The concert of Thrissur Brothers was scheduled to start from 6.30 PM. But the webcast started only from 8 PM when the duo were in the middle of torrential outpour of Bageshri for a pallavi. Then the webcast ended abruptly in the midst of the thani. There may be constraints on account of pujas, procession etc. But it should have been planned better.

1. Priya Sisters-MAK-Patri Satish Kumar, BS Purushothaman List of songs.
Slokam followed by Upendram Asrayami-Khamas- Mysore Vasuevachar
Theril Erinan-Padam-Kalyani
Thunai purindarul-Varamu
Seshachalanayakam-Varali.

The audio was bad. Mridangam by Patri was totally out of the webcast. I could not enjoy this concert.

2. Malladi Bros-S.Varadarajan-Mannargudi Easwaran,KVGopalakrishnan -List of songs.
Ninnu joochi-Saurashtram
Sree Raghuvara sugunalaya-Bhairavi
Sree Narasimha-Phalamanjari
Seve Sree Kantham-Mohanakalyani
RTP-Sankarabharanam
Dwijavanthi-Bhadrachala Ramadas
Aadi deva Paramathma-Sindubhairavi

This was an excellent concert keeping up with their standard. Sree Raghuvara sugunalaya I was hearing in a live concert for the first time. Bhairavi raga alapana by Sriramprasad was brief only. There were no swaras either Mohanakalyani alapana by Ravikumar, neraval, elaborate swaras in two kalams were aural treat. Sankarabharanam alapana was wholesome by SRP. The pallavi as Tiruvananthapadmanabham Asrayeham Sanathanam Sundaram. It was executed well . The ragamalika swaras included Shanmugapriya, Reethigowla, Sreeranjini and a rare Desakshi. This concert concluded by 10 PM. A very good concert.

3. Thrissur Bros-MASundareswaran-Thrissur Mohan,DV.Venkatasubramanian
RTP-Bagesree.

I could see only a portion of the RTP. But it was really topnotch. The alapana of Bagesree by the duo was mesmerizing with plenty of Hindustani flourishes. They can be called Thrissur Ustads. The pallavi was from MDR composition- Sagarasayanavibho Prabho Prabho. The ragamalika swaras included Behag, Hindolam and Varali.

If only the time schedule was adhered to and quality webcast was better ….. Waiting for better next year.

I caught glimpses of Abhishek Shankarabharanam. The broadcast was choppy.

I agree with you that the webcast opportunity also imposes some responsibility on the broadcaster. I suggest at a minimum a four point code:

1. Have a Ticker tape announcing what is happening real time in the auditorium so we are not left wondering if there is no audio or the program is held up etc.
2. Place the camera at a vantage point WITHOUT obstructing or inconveniencing those sitting in the audience..physical attendees are more important that web attendees,
3. Cover the entire ensemble with good focus and zoom and lighting. Pan and zoom if there are speakers, or important interactions taking place with the audience.
4. Take a live line-in audio feed. Do not compromise on audio - after all it is not bandwidth heavy.
5. Bonus point - for quality if webcast audio is more important. Later you can archive a higher quality (HD) video, but livecast should optimises audio and if necessary use a lower resolution (480P or 360P) video.

Anyway thanks all folks like Parivadini, Shaale, etc, etc who have done a great job so far of livecasts.
