My god what a concert it was - 3 hours and 40 minutes of sheer bliss.Only Sanjay can produce such a gem !
Singing on last day of the festival Sanjay just unleashed one gem after another.
Richly he deserved the standing ovation from the full house which he got.

All songs were never heard before - atleast by me so I may have made some errors in words.
The dhanyasi and Shankarabharanam revati aalapanai were simply outstanding. It was as if he wanted to excel in each song and amaze the audience.
In a brilliant strokein shankarabharanam he bought in the famous Madurai mani English swaram , both in aalapanai and swaram and varadharajan simply repeated the phrases as though he was a Xerox copy . Truly amazing!

Each song was superb and no words can describe the brilliance. Honestly I am at loss for words . Still reeling under the magic.

Varadharajan - what an amazing man repeating each and every phrase of Sanjay - such a joy to watch their combination.

Neyveli Venkatesh was superb in the concert just playing at right time and perfectly his thani being superb

Radhakrishnan was able supporter.

Outstanding ,excellent ,-- ( please fill up adjectives as you wish I am at loss for words ).

The Fine Arts society truly deserves all the appreciation for organising such a fine show every year in February, this year being an outstanding one .
kudos and thanks to them.

Priya,
thank you for the report . Looks you indeed heard a great concert . The violinist varadu had a solo violin concert yesterday on saturday at chennai, looks he flew to mumbai to participate for the 3 hour 40+ minute concert , nice to see more financial muscle developing for artists .
I wish i heard that pallavi line -where sanjay took a cue from s kalyanaraman.

First off, Priya - thank you for multitasking (job, family, and baby) and still finding time to share your joy with us! You seem to have enjoyed every concert you've reviewed in the last few days - your writing reflects it very well!

I'm very unsure to bring this up, but a padam before the RTP? Should we hold our breath, or is there an established 'tradition' for this?

I'm hoping that someone will clarify the pallavi a bit better, because as written, I'm afraid I can't understand what it means.

The RTP line is from a BhAratiyAr song. 'uNmai aRindavar unnai kaNippArO mAyaiyE mAyaiyE'.

Priyashekar,
yes, a Sanjayesque list it is, full of surprises in the song list. A solid one on top of it, as expected. He sang a Durbar varNam in Bengaluru two weeks ago, a new one for many rasikAs. The words sound different here. Does anyone know the exact words?

Punarvasu,
Were you at the concert? Bharathi in RTP, and in conclusion--after pavamAna.You would have been happy!

I wish the other two lines of Bharathi are also included in concluding a concert: inRemai varuthum innalgaL mAiga, nanmai vandeiduga, thIdellAm naliga! (May the ills which plague us perish. May goodness conquer all evil!)

For our non-tamizh rasikAs: though vAzhiya Sentamizh is the anthem of TN, how from the particular to the universal the verses go (what else can you expect of Bharathi who embraced all of india as his nADu, and the whole world too?)

vAzhiya Senthamizh vAzhga naTRamizhar!
vAzhiya bhAratha maNith thiru nADu!

Long live glorious tamizh, long live tamizh folk!
And, glory to this gem of a country, India!
vandE mAtharam!

I am still having a hangover!

Emanthune was in kapi as confirmed to my friend by Varadharajan.
Another interesting thing I forgot to mention was the swaras for RTP .Sanjay had taken the main ragas of Abhishek and Sowmya and used them for swaras .What a genius he is.

EmandunE in kApi is an oft-sung tukkaDa in Sanjay's concerts now. rAmakrishnaru manege bandaru is on his current list too and it's very appealing. I don't remember hearing Sanjay sing a virutham at the start of a concert so far.

Punarvasu,
A nearly four hour concert too, and you need more time to recover from it, I guess! Glad you could make it ;)

Priyashekar,
The same applies to you too!

A few corrections:
pallANDenRu pavithiranai (a following verse he sang as virutham) prefacing pallANDu pallANDu.

haridAsulu veDala
EmandunE muddu bAlAmaNi
uNmai aRindavar
mannu pugazh
mAlAsai kOpam

Punarvasu,
Then, it's the same varNam that Sanjay sang in Bengaluru. Patnam's composition, according to several, but Karnatik has it down as Poochi Srinivasa iyengar's.

PallANDu was prefaced with virutham in Bengaluru too, I recollect now!

Could the virutham be the phala stuti traditionally recited at the at the end of the Tiruppallandu?
