Kalki Avatara

I have been wondering what this 'kalki' avatar means. There are many fake Swamijis masquerading as 'kalki'. But there must a proper definition of this 'kalki'. When other avatars were 'on', common folks did not recognize the avatar - only few knew that kRshNa as an avatar during his lifetime. Therefore, contemporaneously are we not able understand what is happening? How did this name and form originate? Or are we trying to give name to the current epoch?

I don't know about the origin of the name "Kalki" but no, we are not not able to understand what is happening. Kalki avatara is expected to happen towards the end of the Kali Yuga. We are still only in the first pAdam of Kali which will last for > 4 lakh years. The puranas have clear indications of the time and place where this avatara shall arise. All people assuming the name of kalki in our times are fake.
