Bharatiya Saamagaana Sabha's Manodharma Festival at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Bangalore

15.02.14, 6.30 pm

Vid. Balamuralikrishna - Vocal
Vid. Krishnakumar - Vocal Support
Vid. Mysore Nagaraj - Violin
Vid. K V Prasad - Mridangam
Vid. Giridhar Udupa - Ghatam

Song list:
1. omkara pranava swaroopa, shanmukha priya, balamuralikrishna
2. naada thanu anisham (he split the pallavi words this way), chittaranjani, tyagaraja
3. gaana sudharasa paana, naatai, balamuralikrishna, S
4. yadava nee baa yadukula nandana, karnataka deva gandhari, purandaradasa, brief alapana
5. nee saati neeve ranga nirathana kaantha ranga, chandrika?, balamuralikrishna, RNST
6. tillana, brindavani, balamuralikrishna

Vid. Balamuralikrishna presented a short, interesting concert to a jam packed chowdiah memorial hall. Concert started at about 6.50 pm and concluded at around 8.35 pm. He seemed to be not very comfortable at times (probably unwell) and Vid. Krishnakumar supported him well. His diction, swaras, laya control and the lyrical beauty of his own compositions stood out. All of the accompanists were in great form and enriched the concert.

The chandrika alapana and kriti sounded like hindola to me until i read about it later at home.

Sais72, thanks for the report,
Listening to the maestro presenting songs like Née Saati Neeve Ranga is always a thrilling experience...what a genius.
The raga is called Chandrika because ,I think, it sounds like Chandrakauns.

Hindolam S G2 M1 D1 N2 S S N2 D1 M1 G2 S

Kadaram (Chandrakosh, Chandrakauns, Chandrakaush) S G2 M1 D1 N3 S S N3 D1 M1 G2 S

You get a lovely version of this song here:

And what a lovely way to emphasize the dominant N3 in the lyric..nI sATi nIvE rangA niratamu nitAntaranga...swaraksharas galore.
