Re: Suryaprakash@RAPuram temple(mahasivarAthri) on Feb 27th,
There were atleast 5 sabhas lining up artists during a mahasivarAthri at chennai. Unlike other 4 sabhas, where artist are given 1 hour each, the RA Puram temple had a nice lineup .There was a preceding abhishek concert for 3 hours followed by this concert of suryaprakash in the night . I could not commute after dinner on time to hear Abhishek(If anyone heard Abhishek , please post it - I wish i was there). Incidentally I also stayed for half an hour after this concert when Ramani Bhagavathar performed a namasankeerthanam under able support of his son mrudangam artist R Sankaranarayanan.Ramani Bhagavathar rocked with a chant of hari narayana(I thought it was strange to start with harinarayana on a mahasivarathri akandam) and i heard his jaya jaya janaki (was that NT or PD composition- forgot). It is lovely to see father of R Sankaranarayanan performing.
Coming to this concert of Suryaprakash, he hit the road running from the first number. His start with a ganesha stuthi and a rolling pantuvarAli in shiva shiva shiva enarAdha was lovely - with quite a high crowd of 300 + in the temple . The swaras of pantuvarAli was sung in one go reminding me of a famous TRS pantuvarAli. Few sangathis from fairly high octave to a middle to lower octave pantuvarAli was superb .
The second number was a long mukhari krithi of MD. He sang pahimamrathnAchala with a real sangathi punch and mukhari poignancy was maintained .The next submain bahudari was lovely .With many musicians avoiding neraval for the krithi, with the neraval being sung there is an added aestheticness in this lovely krithi of MMI school.BEgaDa filler was carnatic heavy and was intense. The filler kapinarayani had a lovely manOdharmic charge with the crowd cheering the most. A long swara patterns in one go with an anchor ri ga ri was lovely and mrudangam was playing at an energetic workout pace and I liked it .
The main in akshayalinga vibHO was well presented , a bit curtailed than what I heard in academy last year. Neravals and swaras in few higher octave sangathis ending with gAndharam ,importantly not shouting with a real vocal throw was excellent. I lost my concentration a bit in the last two , one possible reason was the prasadam. The RA temple were gracious they even gave boost / maltova .
The violinist Neyveli Radhakrishnan had a nice tone . I was bit worried when he had a contact mike in violin -but thank god the volume of violin was right. For few sangathis in early part , i could hear a touch of fusion type sangathis. Both the percussionist were excellent .There were few percussion artists in the audience (madipakkam murali , sudheendra) and with both giving their share of pep , indeed had helped mrudangam artist- Neyveli Ramkumar. Prasanna in ghatam gave lovely support and I am told he is the disciple of Ghatam suresh. One does not hear that much of ghatam suresh these days, nice to hear and see he has a real good disciple-Prasanna.
There was always omnipresent sangathi azhuttam with a fairly high spread of manodhramam in this concert. Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 15 mins.

Rajesh,
In bEgaDa, kaDaikkaN vaithennai ALammA is how I remember it.
Surya's bahudhAri-s are very appealing.
