Sanjay Subrahmanyam presented a couple of concerts last week one on 23 rd at Hamsadhwani and the other on 25th at Ranagireeswarar temple, accompanied by Sri.Varadarajan on violin and Neyveli Sri.Venkatesh on mridangam

Hamsanandi was the best of the lot for me. Varadarajan was equally good in his returns
Tani was also very good

As always Sanjay gives a superb concert in the temple for sivaratri
Could not tell which number was best. The temple atmosphere with such a big crowd listening without any noise is remarkable
This is just a delayed report not a review as my computer gives some problem.

I remember listening to many memorable concerts of Shri Sanjay at that temple. There were a couple of years when he sang Kapali and Parvathi Nayakane in Shanmugapriya which is still ringing in my ears.

is the tukkada item by any chance "Sonnadai seidida sahasama", a ragamalika number popularized by GNB, an absolute favorite of mine. Have not heard this rendered by anyone in a long time. I would love to listen to Sanjay's rendition of this. Any chance this concert is available in SP?

the virutham piece from Ratnagiriswarar temple concert can be seen here

Mine too Sridhar...I feel like echoing the composer's words 'ennennamO solli yennai mayakkiviTTu...' :)

Sridhar and Ravi,
Add one more fan to the song. Even chums like you may feel a moment of envy when I say I looked forward to the song in GNB's concerts, and was thrilled when he sang it. Sanjay, and perhaps Sriram Gangadharan (?) are the only younger singers I have heard singing the song in recent times.

Absolutely, Arasi - I just love some of the phrases he sang - like for 'minnoLiyE undan mEni enRAn aDI' when I hear this in recordings - after hearing Sri Ramachandran explain the nuances in Sri GNB's setting of this kRti to music, I enjoy it even more... He was surely a genius!

:)
Ascending in the 'E' in minnoLiE and the descend in 'undan' was something to hear. The lyrics were quite bold in that day and age. Bharathi inspired, I'm sure :)

Yes Arasi, I am jealous of anyone who was old enough to have listened to GNB's voice in person and appreciated it. Growing up as a young grad student in USA without any exposure to carnatic music, I had gone to the Balaji temple in Pittsburgh with some friends. I spotted this record album in the gift shop. The mesmerizing face with kadukkans on the cover art was attractive and on a whim I bought it. Took it home and bought an LP player to play the three discs in it. I cannot describe the joy/blissful experience I had when I listened to the Suddha Saveri alapana and the ensuing darini telesu konti. To this day the melody haunts me. May be it is the nature of this raga. After a long long time, I listened to Sanjay rendering this piece in a concert album. Different approach to the raga and GNB style full justice to the keertanam. If there is one person whose music can produce the same spark in me as GNB, it is Sanjay.
