GREAT MATHEMATICIAN & MUSICIAN
Another great person for speech session in CM functions. Why MA has not invited him so far.

Hindu article does not cover any of his contribution, if any, to music in general and CM in particular.

Re: GREAT MATHEMATICIAN & MUSICIAN
Oh, I see
They talk about Moduli problems and Geometric invariant theory as well as Representation theory of algebraic groups and I thought there may be some application to CM.
At any rate at the age of 19 he has achieved eminance as a great Mathematician to follow Ramanujan.
May he now live to a 100

Senior Musicians such as Sri Balamurali,TN Seshagopalan,TV Shankaranarayanan,Umayalapuram Sivaraman,T N Krishnan, smt Vedavalli and others in the same line should be called to inaugurate the music festivals. The industrialists and other influential people who sponsor the concerts should be invited and allotted front row sea

Five names for presiding and speechifying at MA inauguration session in 2014:
Shahid Afridi
Desmond Tutu
Karan Johar
Ahmad Karzai
Christiano Ronaldo
MA can charge tickets at Rs 10000 per seat and cover all expenses.
PS someone was betting it will be N Srinivasan.

rsachi, you forgot Arvind Kejriwal. Folks will fully forward bank balances. MA need not charge at all. He gives pretty good understandable speeches, BTW. His 17-point questions after Gate-Crashing Gujarat Modi party are certainly something the up and coming politician should answer.

But then MA has always sported an elitist image. Keeping in line with the old Congress affiliations I am all for Rahul Gandhi. He will speak passionately about women empowerment, grass roots CM and changing the entire system. He may even outdo Amartya in praising the Karnatik Story.

Hema Malini & Vyjayanthi Maala both must be proficient in CM, I supose. Former was running a dance school near MA in which Vairamangalam was teaching CM and the latter was learning from DKP till DKP's demise and did participate in Thyagaraja Aradhana @ Tiruvaiyar.

I have heard that CS Seshadri sings Tappi Brathiki (Thodi) very well.KNV1955 wrote:

For the Kanchipuram Nayana Pillai centennial @ Kanchipuram, I heard T. Brinda and DK Jayaraman sang Seethavara Sangeetha (Devagandhari) in front of Paramacharya and CS Seshadri sang Tappi Brathiki .

Tappi Pradhiki was first popularised by Ariyakudi and then by DKP--I am surethere is a rcording--sometime in the early Forties.

Of course, Ariyakudi is the master of Thodi krithis of Thyagaraja.
You can listen to the version of Tappi Brathiki by Sandhyavandanam Srinvasa Rao - which can be downloaded from Sangeethapriya.
I have seen CS Seshadri at some house concerts of T. Viswa, B. Balasubramanian

Re: GREAT MATHEMATICIAN & MUSICIAN
I can (humbly) vouch for Prof. Seshadri's tappi bratiki. He sings two cittaswarams, for it, both inherited through his grandmother, from Naina Pillai.
He has an enviable repertoire, partly gotten from his elders - the Kancipuram legacy, and in very large part gotten through his genuine and assiduous swAdhyAya. He persevered to read and interpret the musicality in Rangaramanuja Iyengar's notations, and was praised by the hard-to-please scholar-musician; for his aesthetic and high-fidelity interpretations of RRI's notations.
The latter quality is what always shines through - his humble perseverance in learning and polishing the fine aspects of the rAga-tattva as depicted in the songs. He will readily ask you to repeat a phrase that he likes, and will sing it along twice, and utter a couple of bEsh-besh!s, if the sangati appeals to him.
Brindamma has praised his singing, and has openly invited him to sing, in her Saturday sessions, which is a rare, rare honour. She would give an indulgent chuckle and say 'hmmm. teriyum, teriyum.. appaDiye AgaTTum' when he sang Shankaram abhirAmI-manOharam, in the same languorous style as Brindamma, but sharpening the niSada at pankajAsanAdi.
The only thing better than Prof. S singing, is when Prof. Seshadri and Sundari mAmi sing together. They have an amazing understanding of each other, and if he sings a sonorous muktAyam at the end of the pallavi, she will embroider an exquisite miniature at the end of the anupallavi, singing at his pitch, but ever melodious and elegant. One should listen to them plumb the depths of ninu vinA sukhamu gAna, taking turns at 'manasukento Anandamai mei maraci'; and they make you experience the line! The elegance of their music seems to percolate into their warmth, grace and hospitality.
His versions of mahAlakSmi in mAdhavamanOhari, kumAraswAminam in asAveri, all the garbhapuri songs, srI abhayamba in Sriragam and sari evaramma in bhairavi, are unforgettable; and are memories I will cherish to my last day.

Keerthi
Thank you for lifting this discussion to the sublime from the ridiculous.
In any case such an accomplished man wouldn't fit the criteria for being the MA chief guest - as applied to some of the other names I suggested.

Thanks Keerti for highlighting the sangita knowledge of this wonderful person. My wife knows him when he was one time in Sampradaya Committee. People like CS live in their own world. They don't need anyone to endorse their greatness. If world of CM ignrores such people the loss is to CM & the institutions. Definitely not for him. If CM rasikas are destined to lsiten to the meaningless flowery langauage speeches of GK Gandhi & Prof Amartya Sen so be it.

Thanks Keerthi for an enlightening insight into CS's musical prowess-To me the endorsements of the Late Rangaramanuja Iyengar and Brindamma are more vaulable than any accolade that MA or anyother Institution might confer on CS!!!
I hold them both in the highest light--have had many a discussions with the great scholar and everytime I came out with the feeling what a true Nadopasaka and a true and faithful adherent of the Dhanammal school,he was!!.

Re: GREAT MATHEMATICIAN & MUSICIAN
Perhaps it is appropriate to mention the name of another great mathematician and musician in this thread.
He might not be from the same stream of music being discussed above, nevertheless...
Prof. Kalyan Mukherjea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalyan_Mukherjea
Here is a superb recording of Prof. Mukherjea playing Marwa (close to Gamanshrama): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha97XbcaYjA

The year 1981. I used to frequent small casette shops in and around mylapore for music that would appeal to me ,
The shopowner would be often , behind wooden frames with a glass front displaying three of four layers of stacked tapes .
Over the years the tapes he thought would never sell , would get pushed down to the lowest layer. The fast moving ones at the top.
So it was not uncommon to see a father - duo in pressup like like postures scouring the lower rungs in search of great music.
Annoying a lot of other customers.
Here is a bit that has survived for posterity. Sold to me after one such press up at a throwaway price.
Some mylapore , this !!!!
My heart bleeds.
