IT WOULD BE NICE IF YOU CAN DESCRIBE THE CONCERTS AT HIS HOUSE. I particularly remember one where T.Chowdiah after a DIVINE RENDERING OF MMI took the MIC & DESCRIBED THE EXSTACY OF OF ALL!.....UNFORGETTABLE ONES! He was so generous he invited me along with my classmate SSV for dinner! We were in INTERMEDIATE CLASS IN MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE. WE were standing outside in the last row (uninvited too!)......UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES. LGJ HAS DESCRIBED HOW MEMORIES OF GREAT MOMENTS CANNOT BE ERASED....VKV :ymapplause:

Thanks, VKV. I have not read any discussion of the Music Concerts in SSV's house. ( Of course, the concerts and dances during his dr's marriage were talked about a lot in those days). Only persons like you should write about them!

His daughter's marriage pictures were published elaborately in Vikatan then.
Are they available?

I did not mean in SSV'S HOUSE. Kothamangalam Subbu used hold performances in his house which were very famous; Almost all the vidwans eagerly used to participate & EACH one gave their BEST! VKV

Sorry. Yes; in particular, Purattasi Saturday concerts in Subbu's house are also famous. Kothamangalam Subbu's daughter, who lives in Toronto, has told me about them too![update][/update]

It is news to hear SSV's daughter is living in Toronto.
Could you persuade her to write about SSV (his rise from penury and his Himalayan achievements..)
(..or she can narrate and you can write them...)

Not SSV's dr. One of Kothamangalam Subbu's daughters lives in Toronto. As VKV wanted, my ref was to concerts and Purattasi Sanikkizamai concerts which were a tradition in Subbu's house .

CML:
You may enjoy reading a little bit about SSVasan here:
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/fr/2003/0 ... 510600.htm

I may post some more in my blog on Vasan.

He did not like ' தனிமனித ஆராதனை’. He had given strict instruction to his son not to write about him after he passed away, not to erect a statue or arrange a big meeting etc. He felt that the organizations like Vikatan and Gemini were the important ones and should be placed front and center. Vasan's son actually did not even want to celebrate even Vasan's centenary because of that. But Vasan's gr-son persuaded his fr to bring out a souvenir malar on that occasion. That's the only record of Vasan's life that I know of.

CML,
SSV had just one daughter, if I recollect.

VKV,
I have been in the Kothamangalam house a few times, the hall with a floor like a chess board (black and white marble?)--an old fashioned house with a muTRam (atrium) in the middle. Subbu Mama and his family (and Kothamangalam Cheenu's family living in the other wing) were hospitable people. I am not sure how many children they had in that house, but most of them were younger to me. His son used to participate in AIR's children's programs (Viswanathan??).

Pasupathy,
Yes, please persuade her to write about her father--a man I admired and liked very much.

Arasi,

Yes, Vasan had one dr: LakshmiNarayani . MS, DKP, Semmangudi, Rajarathnam PiLLai...all gave concerts at her marriage!

One of K.Subbu's drs-in-law, Lakshmi Srinivasan has published a biography on Subbu . It has many details about Subbu's life. ( published by Iswarya Krishnan, Washington, DC ) . So I don't think anyone in Subbu's family will write any other book on Subbu.

In 2009 , we had a meeting at Toronto where Subbu's dr and I talked for an hr each about Subbu:
Here's a summary:

Great read. Thank you, 'buzz' seidavuDanE 'padi'vu Seyyum Pausupathy :)

I would have heard Subbu's villuppATTu--gAndhi mahAn kadai a dozen times as a child, and every time it moved me to tears.

His daughter's offering her gold jewelry shows the way she was nurtured with national fervor!

Dear Sri.Pasupathy,
I thank you for writing about SO MANY of my heroes&heroines of my days growing up in Madras. I just wish to add one more VERY FORTUNATE occasion when I was lucky to be present when Madurai Mani Iyer & Kothamangalm Subbu discussed Mahatma Gandhi; Both were TRUE Gandhians and under their influence& inspiration I STILL wear only SOUTH INDIAN DRESS the moment I land in India. As an aside I have to write about the famous principal of Madras Christian College Dr.A.J.Boyd (From Edinburgh, Scotland)who allowed Congress leaders to address meetings in the college during the tutmultuous days of the Independence movement. He even attended the meetings!.......MMI was a fan of K.Subbu esp. the Villupattu.....Those days STILL INSPIRE ME & I feel they represent the BEST of my learning experiences.....VKV :-BD

Is a recording of Subbu's Gandhi villuppATTu available?
Pl ask his daughter...
Though கலைமணி was used by him as his pen name< I believe he was also a கலைமாமணி..
Both you and arasi should share what you knew about him..

Arasi, VKV:
Thanks. KS also did Bharathi in VilluppAttu . A few others too.
CML:
Thanks. I have not seen Gandhi mahAn kathai in audio form. KS' son may have a copy. As far as I know his dr does not have one.
Instead, you can read this post about Gandhi Mahan Kadhai!
http://s-pasupathy.blogspot.com/2010/08/2.html

I have more material on KS, but don't have the time to select interesting parts and post.... I have given his family some rare pages from Vikatan and Kalki which they did not have!

We covered his Thillana Mohanambal in one of our Tamil Arangam-s... I covered it as part of my talk on Music and Dance in Tamil Fiction and Indira Peterson elaborated on it . If interested , please read :
