Kittappa , owner of now closed Ananda lodge at Thanjavur was a great rasika and connoissur of carnatic music. He not only patronised all the yesteryears vidwans but also took parental care of them by making their stay comfortable in his lodge which was a renowned one during the time when Thanjavur was a seat of music. The idea of this post is that Rasikas should pay homage to to such unsung heroes who were responsible for nurturing those great musicians who owe their success and fame in the field to a certain extent to such persons

G.N.B,Palghat Mani Iyer, T.N.krishnan and Semmangudi Srivasa Iyer were his great friends.In the late 40's or early 5o's G.N.B went on a tour with T.N krishnan , Palghat Mani Iyer and Kittappa(as a rasika) to calcutta, Delhi and Bombay.For G.kittapa's marriagein the early 40's G.N.B,s music was arranged with Chowdiah and Mani Iyer at Kumbakonam.

4-5 முறை சந்தித்து சாவகாசமாய் சங்கீத அரட்டை அடிக்கும் பேறு எனக்குக் கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. பாலக்காடு மணி ஐயருக்கும், ஜி.என்.பி-க்கும் ஆத்ம நண்பர். வயசு காலத்தில் இவர்கள் இருவருடனும் ஊர் ஊராக சென்று சங்கீதம் கேட்பதையே தொழிலாக வைத்துக் கொடவர். கல்கத்தாவில் ஒரு பாட்டுக்கல்ல கச்சேரிக்கே ‘ஒன்ஸ் மோர்’ கேட்டு நான்கிலக்க சம்பாவனை கொடுத்த கதையை அவர் எத்தனை முறை கேட்டாலும் அலுக்காமல் மீண்டும் வாழ்ந்து காட்டுவார். இவர் வீட்டு பலா மரங்களை எத்தனையோ மணி ஐயரின் மிருதங்கங்களாய் மாறி நாதத் திவலைகளை தெளித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. பாலக்காடு மணி ஐயரைப் பற்றி அவர் மனம் திறந்து பேசிய சில மணி நேரப் பதிவை என்றேனும் ஒரு நாள் சீர்படுத்தி பதிப்புக்குரிய நேர்காணலாய் ஆக்க வேண்டும். தஞ்சாவூரில் ஆனந்தா லாட்ஜ் சாம்பாருக்கு மயங்காத வித்வான்களே கிடையாதாம். எனக்கு சந்தேகமேயில்லை; தினமணி சிவகுமார் சாம்பார் ரெசிபியைக் கூட அவரது ஏராளமான குறிப்புகளுக்கிடையில் பத்திரப்படுத்தி வைத்திருப்பார். திருவையாறு தியாகராஜ உற்சவத்தை பல வருஷம் சிறப்பாக நிகழ்த்தியதில் கிட்டப்பாவுக்கு முக்கியமான பங்கு உண்டு. சுகவாசி. நல்ல ரசிகர். கலை வரலாற்று ஆர்வலர்/ஆய்வாளர்களுக்கு இவரின் இழப்பின் மதிப்பு புரியக் கூடும்.சங்கீதப் பொற்காலத்தையும் இக்காலத்தையும் இணைத்த மற்றும் ஒரு பொன்சரடு நீங்கியிருக்கிறது. அன்னாரின் ஆன்மா சாந்தியடைய வேண்டுகிறேன்.

ஆனந்தா லாட்ஜ் ஜி.கிட்டப்பா

என் நினைவுப் பொக்கிஷத்தில் ஒளிரும் விலைமதிப்பற்ற மாணிக்கம் ஜி.என்.பி. முப்பது வருடங்கள் இடைவெளி இன்றிப் பழகி அவரது ஆழமான அந்தரங்கமான ஸ்நேகிதனாய்த் திகழ்ந்தேன். அவரைப் பற்றி இன்று வரை எத்தனையோ முறை பேசியிருக்கிறேன். ஆனாலும் எங்கள் இருவரது நட்பின் ஊற்றுக்கண்ணிலிருந்து பொங்கிப் புறப்படும் விஷயப் பிரவாகம் இன்னும் தீர்ந்தபாடில்லை. எனக்கும் அவருக்கும் இடையிலான நட்பு, வெறும் ரயில் ஸ்நேகமல்ல. அது ஆத்ம பந்தம்.

மகாபாரதத்தில் ஒரு காட்சி எனக்கு நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. பத்ம வியூகத்தில் புகுந்த அபிமன்யு வீர சொர்க்கம் அடைந்ததை அறியாது பாசறைக்கு திரும்பினான் அர்ஜுனன். அப்போது, "கிருஷ்ணா, இனம் புரியாத வியாகூலம் இருள் போல என் மனத்தில் கவிகிறது. என் வாய் உலர்ந்து, உடல் தளர்கிறது. காரணமின்று ஒரு துக்கம் என் உள்ளத்தில் எழுகிறது.", என்கிறான்.

ஜி.என்.பி மறைந்த அந்தக் கணத்தில் ஆனந்தா லாட்ஜில் இருந்த எனக்கும் பார்த்தனின் மனோநிலை ஏற்பட்டது. உட்கார்ந்திருந்த நான் தடாலென்று கீழே விழுந்தேன். இக லோகத்தில் இழை அறுந்து அவர் மோட்சப் பிரயாணம் மேற்கொண்ட கணத்தில், என்னை உலுக்கித் தள்ளியது எது? அது எங்கள் இடையே இருந்த ஆத்ம பந்தம்தான்.

எனக்கு ஜி.என்.பி-யை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியவர் ஸ்ரீ. பாலக்காடு மணி ஐயர். ஒரு சமயம் செம்பை பாகவதர் எங்கள் வீட்டில் தங்கி இருந்த போது, அவரோடு மணி ஐயரும் தங்கியிருந்தார். ஒருநாள் ஜி.என்.பி-யை எங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்து வந்து அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். அப்போது ஜபம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்த செம்பை பாகவதர், ஜி.என்.பி-யிடம், "நீ பெரிய பாக்கியவான். கோபாலசாமி ஐயரின் ஸ்நேகிதம் உனக்கு வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் நன்மைத் தரவிருக்கிறது.", என்று பெருமையுடன் கூறினார்.

நான் முதன் முதலில் ஜி.என்.பி-யின் கச்சேரியை மியூசிக் அகாடமியில் கேட்டேன். அன்று அவருக்கு துவாரம் வெங்கடசாமி நாயுடுவும், கோதண்டராம ஐயரும் பக்கவாத்தியம் வாசித்தனர். அன்று முதல் அவர் கச்சேரியில் லயித்துவிட்டேன்.

ஜி.என்.பி படிப்பில் சிறப்பாக விளங்கினார். அனால், சங்கீதத்தில் அதைவிட சிறப்பாக விளங்கி பிராபல்யம் அடைந்தார். சங்கீதத்தை குருகுலத்தின் மூலம் அப்யாசிக்காவிட்டாலும், தன் முயற்சியால் அப்போதிருந்த வித்வான்கள் கோஷ்டியில் இடம்பிடித்துக் கொண்டார். இது ஒரு பெரிய ஆச்சரியம்!

1964-ல் திருவையாற்றில் செய்த கச்சேரி நேஷனல் பிரோகிராமாக ஒலிபரப்பாக ஏற்பாடாகியிருந்தது. லால்குடி ஜெயராமன் வயலினும், உமையாள்புரம் சிவராமன் மிருதங்கமும் பக்கவாத்தியமாக ஏற்பாடாகியிருந்தனர். கச்சேரிக்கு முன்றைய தினம் ஜி.என்.பி-க்கு கடுமையான ஜுரம். கச்சேரி நடக்குமா என்று நாங்கள் சந்தேகத்திலிருந்தோம். அன்றைய இரவு, தன் சிஷ்யரிடம் தியாகராஜரின் 138 கிருதிகள் அடங்கிய பட்டியலைக் கொடுத்து, அதில் எதைப் பாட வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டனுப்பியிருந்தார். அன்றைய கச்சேரி, அவருடம் உடல் உபாதைக்கு இடையிலும் வெகு சிறப்பாகவே அமைந்தது.

அவரது கச்சேரியில் ராக ஆலாபனைக்குச் சிறந்த இடம் அளித்தார். புதிது புதிதாய் எண்ணற்ற கீர்த்தனங்களை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியவர். அபூர்வ ராகங்களைக் கையாண்டு ரசிகர்களை பிரம்மிக்க வைத்தவர். அவரது கச்சேரியில் பல்லவி பாடாமலிருக்க மாட்டார். துக்கடாவில் அவர் பாடிய பாடல்கள் பெரும் பிரசித்தியைப் பெற்றிருந்தன.

ஜி.என்.பி-யின் பாட்டுடன் பாலக்காடு மணி ஐயரின் வாசிப்பு சேர்ந்துவிட்டால் அதன் அழகே தனி! ஜி.என்.பி பாடும் பல அற்புதமான சங்கதிகளை, அப்படியே இம்மி பிசகாமல் மணி ஐயர் வாசிக்கும் போது இருவரின் மேதமையும் அற்புதமாய்ப் பரிமளிக்கும். பழநி சுப்ரமணிய பிள்ளையின் வாசிப்பையும் ஜி.என்.பி மிகவும் விரும்பினார். பிடில் ராகமாணிக்கம் பிள்ளையின் வாசிப்பில் ஜி.என்.பி-க்கு எல்லையில்லா ஆனந்தம்.

என்னைப் பொறுத்த மட்டில், சுமார் 30 வருட காலம் அவருடனே சென்று குறைந்த பட்சம் 2000 கச்சேரிகளாவது கேட்டிருப்பேன். அந்த நாத அனுபவத்தின் மணம் இன்னும் என்னிடம் வீசிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

ஒரு சமயம் நீடாமங்கல் மீனாட்சி சுந்தரம் பிள்ளை வீட்டு கல்யாணத்தில் ஜி.என்.பி கச்சேரி செய்தார். அந்தக் கச்சேரியை பல நாதரசுர வித்வான்கள் ரசித்துக் கேட்டனர். அந்த ரசிகர் கூட்டத் தலைவராக இருந்தவர் திருவாவடுதுறை ராஜரத்தினம் பிள்ளை. அன்று ஜி.என்.பி பாடிய பிரதான ராகம் தோடி. தோடிக்குச் சக்கரவர்த்தியாக விளங்கிய ராஜரத்தினம் பிள்ளை, "ஜி.என்.பி ஐயா! என்னிடம் தோடி ராகம் இல்லை. அது உங்களிடம்தான் உள்ளது", என்று பேசிப் பெருமை படுத்தினார்.

1941-ம் வருடம், சௌடையாவின் அழைப்பின் பேரில், மைசூர் மகாராஜாவின் முன்னிலையில் ஜி.என்.பி கச்சேரி செய்தார். மஹாராஜா பிரத்யேகமாகப் பாராட்டி, பெரிய பொன்னாடை ஒன்றைப் போர்த்தினார். அப்போது உடன் சென்றிருந்த என்னையும் அரண்மனைக்கு அழைத்துப் போய், மஹாராஜாவிடம் அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். அதை என்னால் மறக்கவே முடியாது.

கல்கத்தாவில் ஒரு கச்சேரி. வெகு பிரமாதமாய் அமைந்த அந்தக் கச்சேரியைக் கேட்டவர்கள், "ஒன்ஸ் மோர்", "ஒன்ஸ் மோர்" என்று பெருத்த அளவில் கோஷமிட்டனர். உடனிடையாக இன்னொரு கச்சேரிக்கு ஒப்புக் கொண்டவுடன்தான் அமைதியடைந்தனர். சுமார் 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு, வேறெந்த வித்வானுக்கும் இல்லாத அளவு ஜி.என்.பி-க்கு கச்சேரிகள் இருந்தன என்று கூறினால் அது மிகையாகாது.

ஜி.என்.பி-யின் குணாதிசயங்கள் மிகவும் பிரபலம். தேர்ந்தெடுத்த சிலருடன்தான் பழகுவார். அதில் பிரபல வக்கீல் சி.கே.வெங்கடநரசிம்மனுக்கு முதலிடம். மற்ற ஆத்ம சிநேகிதர்களில் எனக்கும் ஒரு இடமுண்டு. மாதத்தில் பத்து நாட்கள், கச்சேரி இருந்தாலும் இல்லாவிட்டாலும், ஆனந்தா லாட்ஜுக்கு வந்துவிடுவார். மிகவும் பொறுமைசாலி. குழந்தை உள்ளம் படைத்தவர். தன் தாயாரிடம் மிகுந்த பக்தியுள்ளவர்.

பெரிய சம்சாரியாக இருந்து, குடும்பத்தை நன்கு கவனித்து, அவர்களுக்கு தேவையானதைக் குறையின்றி செய்து முடித்தவர். காஞ்சி பரமாச்சாரியாரிடம் அத்யந்த பக்தி. எங்கள் கிருஹத்தில் பெரியவர் தங்கியிருந்த போது, கச்சேரி செய்து அவர் அனுக்கிரஹத்தைப் பெற்றவர்.

அவரைப் பற்றி நினைக்கையில் பல எண்ணங்கள் அலைமோதுகின்றன. என் உயிரோடு இணைந்து வாழ்ந்த அவரை எந்த நாளும் மறக்க முடியாது!

On coming to know that G.N.B 's concert at Tanjore G.Kittappa's cousin at Tiruvarur requested him that G.N.B should sing at a Doctor's family wedding .Normally G.N.B wanted a gap in between a concert but could not say no to Kittappa.He requested Kittappa to arrange local accompaniments(Sikkil Bhakkar and Kunju iyer).He did not take any money and gave it to the Violin and Mridanga vidwan.

Lalitharam: I endorse 100% ARASI's sentiment towards your narrative--your book on GNB is truly a labor of love. My late father(KSM)--having been a "Hanger-on" to the musicians to Thiruvaiyaru-- used to wax eloquent about the family's hospitality.

One tidbit about the late Ananada Lodge Kittappa--not only the family was a great patron of the Arts and artistes,his father the Respected Gopalaswamy Iyer was a great benefactor--the late S.S.Vasan used to recall his indebtedness to the family-- when he(Vasan) lost his father early and the family was in dire financial straits,the Late Gopalaswamy Iyer employed his mother in the lodge's kitchen(grinding Idly paste) and Vasan--true to his nature never forgot the help and the Kittappa family was a welcome guest at the Gemini House on Cathedral Road.

Yes those were the days when men who toiled and became successful never forgot their roots and their benefactors--I can safely assert there was not a single musician of that era who did not owe deep debts of gratitude to the family.

Unfortunately I never got a chance to meet with him despite my father urging me to accompany him on his Thiruvaiyaru pilgrimage!! But I have heard so much about him from the various musicians that I think I know him well!!

May his soul rest in peace!!!

Patrons like him have continuously engaged musiscians . We all owe a lot to these great souls.

G.kittappa was one of the oldest Donor Memebers of Music Academy Chennai.

A great patron of musician. In the video documentary of GNB, G. Kittappa says a few words about GNB from his reclining easy chair. He listened to 2,000 GNB concerts, wow !! One of the stories I have heard is that he took so much liberty with musicians to the extent that - when GN sang an alapana of Marga Hindolam, prefacing Chalamelara Saketharama, Kittappa had enquired GNB (who was the numero uno star at that time) if an alapana was really required for the raga MargaHindolam.

It also seems Kittappa was a fan/supporter of many musicians and the local Nadaswaram artists. Most musicians mention in their recollections of their concerts at Tanjore and invariably Kittappa's name is mentioned. IIRC, Semmangudi perhaps sang his last public concert for Kittappa's Sadabhishekam.

Kittappa was 80 in the year 2001. Semmangudi mama was 93 then (1908- 2003). I never knew SSI sang when he was 93. Where was this sadhAbhishekam held, I am assuming it was chennai.

It may be possible to consider G. Kittappa as Tanjavurine Prakasincha "raskika siromani" . That ilk of patronage and rasika who supported music at large is becoming almost extinct.
Semmangudi's best concerts were probably in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In fact, in a TV interview, Kittappa raves about a Semmangudi concert at Medha Dakshinamurthy temple (near Mayuram). The recordings of such concerts are only embedded in the memories of rasikas alone. Listening to GNB's with Palghat Mani Iyer (two musicians close to Kittappa) of a rendition of Kanna thandri Neeve (Narayani) - what majesty in rendition.

Well said. So true of so many things of the (recent) past when recording through photograph, audio and video did not exist. If at all anything existed it is the recollection of those events orally or through the written word.

Even when recordings exist, for which we are eternally grateful, the emotional reaction of those who had listened to it live would have been at a different level than that of ours now.

What adds some 'juice' back to the recordings is the review and impressions of people who attended those very concerts live, retrieving those embedded memories. While forum itself can be thought of as a vehicle for that purpose (among others), the musical morsels thread http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=20824 is especially noteworthy in that regard
