S.Aishwarya at Mysore Association –Matunga-Mumbai 15/03/2014

Post by vinayakkharat »

S.Aishwarya at Mysore Association – Matunga - Mumbai 15th March 2014.
Anuthama Murali – Violin
Akshay Anand – Mridangam
R C Shekar - Ghatam

In Marathi a Saying goes like this “Murti Lahan Pan Kirti Mahan” which means the name or appearance is not so big but the fame is beyond the comparison and 18 year old S.Aishwarya’s astounding 2 ½ hour Carnatic concert at Mysore Association on 15th March 2014 reminded me of this!

Coming from the Legendary musical lineage of her Great Grandmother M.S.Subbulakshmi and her Grandmother Radha Viswanathan and having chosen music as her career, Aishwarya is always subject to unavoidable comparisons with her Great Grandmother which in a way is unfair and puts undue pressure on the young artist.

Nevertheless and in spite of the high pressure which her background bestows on her automatically, Aishwarya has been able to establish her own space and to me she came as a singer with an extraordinarily good voice which extends across the 3 octaves effortlessly in perfect pitch and with a firm command on svarasthanas. This is something she must persevere with and preserve carefully.

I noticed that her breath control was excellent and she knew exactly when to pause and not miss the notes even in higher speeds.

The song list.

1. Mathe - Khamas
2. Ksheerasagara shayana Vakshasthala – Mayamalavagowla – Raga and Neraval
3. Raghu Vamsha Sudha – Kathanakuthuhalam – Cittasvarams in 3 speeds.
4. Bhajana Seya Rada – Dharamavathi – Raga, Neraval Svaras
5. Sri Ranga Pura Vihara – Brindavan Saranga
6. Chakkani Raja – Kharaharapriya – Raga, Neraval and Svaras
7. Baa re Panduranga - Maand
8. Jagadhodharana – Misra Kapi
9. Baaro Ranga - It was announced that this was a composition of Maasthi Venkatesa Iyengar
10. Bhavayami Gopalabalam - Aishwarya sang this Annamacharya Kriti on my request :)
11. Kurai Onrum Illai
12. Maithreem Bhajatha

With the opening song Mathe, Aishwarya had taken control of the minds of the audience.
The Raga Aalapanas were clear and soothing; The Neraval in Ksheerasgara brought back memories of her great grandmother especially when she beseeched Goddess Kamakshi. The svaras in Dharmavathi and Kharaharapriya were crisp. Aishwarya displayed her grip on laya with great variety in the svara singing in Dharmavathi where she also sang svaras in Thisram and Khandam

Baare Panduranga, Jagadhodharana, Bhavayami and the new song Baaro Ranga in Sindhu Bhairavi were enchanting and had the listeners in a trance like state.

Anuthama Murali on violin was extremely supportive and her raga essays were wonderful.
Akshay Anand is a left hander and a prodigy on the mridangam and his small structure belies his playing ability and variety which he brings to the concert platform. His accompaniment was of a very high standard and had great anticipation. One could see this in Chakkani Raja and in the svaras in Dharmavathi. The tani was absorbing with able support from R C Shekar on Ghatam.

To conclude I would say it was an extremely fulfilling concert by Aishwarya and her entire team in front of fully packed auditorium of Mysore association and she did full justice.

Carnatic music is so vast and the young Aishwarya still has a long way to go, experiment more and give more performances and I am sure in the years to come she will come out in flying colours.

Thank you for the review, it is very informative.

I can imagine how the songs numbered 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 11, 12 and 13 would have gone... :)

And the thani and support of Akshay ... who is the best talent from our great school, about which we can boast...

One of my friend who happened to attend this concert was finding it difficult to understand how these teenagers are able to deliver this kind of performance at a very young age...

Cineu sir please post some videos if available...

Thanks,
--R.

Thank you Vinayak for the review and Raghav for his comments.
This concert was Aishwarya's first concert in Mumbai and the Mysore Association Auditorium provided a wonderful ambience with a good acoustic system in place.
Have not yet got the videos on hand. Will post a few clips once I get the same.
Two pictures below from the occasion.

Vinayak,
A very good review. You should write more about Mumbai concerts.

May the youngsters make a mark, as they seem to be doing, anyway :)

Tx , vinayakkharat for your review , keep them coming
In north what is the actual name of this rAga brindavana sarang or brindavan saranga

We usually think hindustani kAPi and Mishra kapi is different , we put jagdhodharana as hindustani kApi

Cienu - what is the raga of baaro ranga?

As Vinay pointed out Aishwerya should preserve & strengthen her singing in higher octave. Besides a great voice MS ( with sweet support of Radha mami ) had mass appeal because of her ability to sing in higher octaves with excellent breath control. Not many young vocalists are comfortable singing in higher ranges. Aishwerya's strength is her voice & the repertoire of MS. Akshay is talented. Kalidas sir has trained him very well.

Is the reviewer vina, vinay(a) or vinayak? :)

For now, Aishwarya has her 'most experienced in musical matters' grandmother Radha Viswanathan guiding her on song lists and other matters about her performances besides being taught by her (and Jambu Kannan?). I also know Aishwarya to be a self-assured and mature youngster who is serious about her music.

Ah, I need to add this too--an answer to someone's question: why are some rasikas so keen on cheering Aishwarya? The answer is simple. We simply would not like to see the music of her lineage become a thing of the past. If it's perpetuated by even the fourth generation, power to that phenomenon! How many greats have left this earth without their precious music being kept alive by their descendants! Those of us from musical families feel it even more, I guess :(

Arasi-"Those of us from musical families feel it even more"-- I feel your pain but rest assured we are all aware of the lineage and if not directly involved in concerts, your family is holding the "torch" aloft--composing,choreographing,dancing and vocal,poetry--there is one member atleast for each of the performing arts!!

Vnayak--Excellent Review!! Where have you been!! Mumbai concerts need lots of fillip like the one you just provided us with!!

Cienu: Congrats to Aishwarya--she has a tremendous burden to face but it is heartening to see her carry it with grace and aplomb without being fazed or overwhelmed!! Patti(MS Amma) would have been the First Cheerleader had she been alive.

My mind goes nostalgic--I recall several good artistes who made their debut in Mysore Association-- Two of the pioneers--the late Mr. Mr.Varadarajan(MD of Hindusthan Construction Co) and the late Mr.B. Narayanaswamy(leading advocate in Matunga and the Father of Supreme Court Justice SriKrishna (of the Krishna Commission fame on Shiv Sena) were ardent supporters of Carnatic Musicians--especially the ones who did not get noticed early in their career by Sabhas like Shanmukhananda,Chembur Fine Arts etc--all found a "platform' with Mysore Association. My late father--despite the fact that he could not say a syllable in Kannada was an ex0-officio member of the Mysore Assn thanks to the gentlemen mentioned above-- and whenever he failed to persuade the Shanmukhananda Sabha authorities to give chance to young artistes he would use his influence with the Mysore Assn--examples--BMK in the early fifties had his first concert in Mysore Assn(with his deep voice, and nonchalance in all aspects of music he simply took the city by storm), TRS(in the late fifties) made a mark.

WHAT HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH AISHWARYA'S CONCERT!!

If past is any guide to the future Aishwarya can look forward to this debut in Bombay to be a stepping stone to success like the artistes who got their "break" in Mysore Assn!!!

I am looking forward to some video clips!!!

This Mysore Association must have been around for a long time!

I have a newspaper clipping (Bombay Chronicle) announcing a concert on May 29th 1939 at the premises of the Association, near King's Circle, Matunga.

"Mysore Brothers" Veena Raja Rao and Veena Gopala Rao gave a performance of Veena and Vocal on that day!

The Brothers had given a performance there in the year 1937 also!

Yes, the Mysore association is a pillar of the old South Indian community in Bombay.
I even remember attending a wedding in the premises when I was a child.

My mother used to say 'ellOrum pallakkil ErinAl, (Era AsaippaTTAl) pallakkai tUkkuvadu yAr'? Meaning ,if every one is seated ( or wants to be seated ) on the palanquin, who will carry it?
For any art to thrive , rasikas or lovers of the art are as important as the performer or the artist. A knowledgeable one is an asset to art form.

Another way to compare:

Person/ the Lord seated in Pallakku-- is Music itself.

People who carry the pallakku -- Musicians.

Bhakthas (in the case of the Lord being seated in pallakku) --- Rasikas.

Musicians take pride in carrying Music. rasikas enjoy the pleasure. :)

Hello :)

Just to clarify my name is Vinayak.

Due to my preoccupation with my work schedule, could not reply earlier

....thanx for the appreciation.

In Hindustani there is the raga with same name Brindavani Sarang but its bit different musically from Brindavana Saranga. Maybe an expert can explain it better!

When I requested Aishwarya for Bhavayami Gopalabalam, apart from the fact that I just love this song, I also wanted to observe how this young singer handled the crucial part at ‘Chatulanatana’ And she sang that perfectly both the times just as her Great Grandmother and Grandmother have done in the Balaji Pancharatnamala :)

Though the musicians carry the music, perhaps those that feel music is carrying them shine better.

Thank you Cineu Sir for the URLs

Aishwarya has presented a matured rendering in all the 4 numbers posted here. Dharmavati has been handled with precision. To achieve this degree of completeness in a difficult rAgam at this age is difficult. In the swara sequence, the transition to Tisram - that very idea is commendable The transition maintains the connectivity and continuity both. Good imagination, very good.

And as always, presence of Shruti Suddham throughout. Akshay's patterns are clear and crisp, the thoppi is a treat :-*

Excellent job by the young team :-BD :ymapplause:

Aishwarya's concert took place quite far away from home (not counting the one in Cleveland where she gave vocal support to her grandmother). This first Mumbai concert would have been something, even for the earnest and confident Aishwarya. Trying to give a good account of herself would have been foremost on her mind and she did very well.

Her mAtE was rendered in a lively manner (not an easy piece!). Then bhajana sEya rAdA which isn't a cinch either for a youngster when it comes to elaborating the rAgA.

Her dEvara nAma was very pleasing to the ears.

Thank you Cienu for the clips...:)
