Yes the concerts took place as three parts... first Smt.Sudha Ragunathan accompanied by Shri. Tiruvarur Vaidhyanathan on the mirudangam and Shr.R.K.Shriramkumar on the violin. The second part was Dr.Shri. BalamuraliKrishna accompanied by Shri.Mannargudi Eswaran on the mirudangam and Shri. Nagai Muralidharan on the violin.
The third part was the actual jugalbandhi with Shri.R.K.Shriram Kumar and Shri. Vaidyanathan accompanying them.

Jugalbandhi by its definition should it not mean having two genres of music and/or instruments. This is more like Sudha singing first hour , Dr BMK singing second hour and both Sudha and BMK singing as duet in the third hour.

saswathipriya
How long was the concert , did it have two tanis?
WHen both of them sang , did two violins and two mrudangams play then? .

Rajesh,
Not necessarily, I think.
In fact, the very first time I heard the word was when I listened to Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar playing together--I am assuming that you meant that vocal and instrumental concerts come from two different kinds of music in a jugalbandhi.
I liked the expression jugalbandhi until in recent years it has also come to mean 'any odd mixture of music!'

This concert sounds more like they were taking turns to sing--two star performers...

The concert took.place nearly for three hours and when both performed together, only one vioin and one mirudangam were accompanied. (Shri.R.K.Shriramkumar and Shri. Tiruvarur vaidhyanathan)

Arasi
Ali akbar khan played the sarod where as Ravishankar played the sitar , hence when they play together calling it as jugalbandhi is ok. But why this is called jugalbandhi is beyond me , till some one clarifies?

I think the concert doesnt fall any short of being called a jugalbandhi....As far as I understand Jugalbandhi is where two different artiste (may or may not be from the same tradition of music) perform on an equal footing. That is what the definition of wikipedia also says.

Jugalbandi is supposed to be conversation, not taking turns, or singing a duet.

This sort of presentation is usually more to do with getting two stars on the same billing.

sashwathipriya, obviously this program went well, and you enjoyed it. That is more important!

In fact, the very first time I heard the word was when I listened to
first time I listened to bmk ,the feeling inside me was like this - such a heady concoction of philosophy , creativity (from composer to performer), surreal imagery , aesthetics .....

over the years

jugalbandis have developed a range from

to
Image

no offense meant to anyone just growing pains for myself -
a second time .growing into old age.sigh !!

More 'talai thirugum pandi' (head reeling row of musicians)?

Varsha,
Do you hear a chorus of growing pains of that sort from a number of us here? More legitimate ones than yours!
