Carnatic Companion for beginners?

I have a few of my kith and kin wanting to have software or an aid to help them as a sing along practice. Has anyone come across this? I know that Arunk has done one for ipad , but this one seem to be for android.

Has anyone tried it? I am really rummaging through to find one like that , which would be of great help to the learners when they start , where most of the time they have to practice on their own.

Did not try it. Read the one review in Amazon which gives it a lukewarm rating and to evaluate the reviewer read all the other reviews by that reviewer to decide how much weight to put on that review.

But given that the cost is quite low, I think you will derive enough value from it for that money. Buy for one of them first.

Dear brother-member, ganesh_mourthy, I did not go through the instrument you have mentioned. But, in my vast teaching experience of several failures and successes, I ultimately found that an automatic keyboard having the provision of Metronome and Transpose is the best for learners right from the first day of the music lesson irrespective of the teacher’s efficiency to keep the aspirant always on track and, at the same time, not to make him/her addicted to it. amsharma

Yep, wanted to try it. But, just switched over to BB from Android now. Unfortunately, platform unfriendly apps restrain the users choice. Well , I will try to borrow some android for testing. It is definitely inexpensive to try, but wish it was for windows platform.

Akella Ji - if it's an app, you could control the speed or even go faster, and that is when you, ideally but not essentially, need a companion or aid. Of course, a deft hand will do the job in keyboard. Manual dexterity and speed, and singing along is a task per se. But, that is part of learning , I agree.

Dear brother-member, ganesh_mourthy,

Having served as a music-teacher for more than four decades and having, at last, found myself an un-successful teacher I had to introspect myself very deeply. In that introspection, I have found many incredible details in regard to the teaching/learning our music. Among many of them one reveals that all our music-teachers successfully brought out a rich tradition making all the aspirants always dependents upon the teachers for many years by not developing the notation system, by not giving any notated compositions and, at the same time, also by discouraging each and every aspirant from using any machine either for Shruti or Tala or even for listening to a pre-recorded CD. Here, at Secunderabd, in our music-institute, Swarabhangima we have nearly 100 school-going kids. Each and every kid regularly practices on Casio-MA-150 along with the in-built provisions of Metronome and Transpose and learn music very quickly and efficiently unlike in any other institute on the globe, I can tell. Umpteen of my experiments revealed that relying upon a machine always helps a lot to the aspirants than a teacher. In fact, even though this is a very crucial subject to discuss, unfortunately, none of our music-teachers comes out for any discussion. That is the pity. amsharma
