Re: 2014 Apr 28 VVV Concert @ SRSM
This is the first time ever I am noticing where tani is broken into two where the first tani is played by Mrudangam artist- UKS , the second tani is exclusively played by other two upa pakkavadhyam (Kanjira and ghatam). Is this a veena venu violin thing where historically ramani-LGJ- venkataraman did do that ? Or is it just a first time that is happening where the mahavidwan UKS felt he should do that way.

Remember an instance in KGS, (UKS, Malladi Bros - 2012 season) where UKS had raised objection for 1 tani .. as he insisted that there should be 2 tanis in a concert.

2 tanis where participation by all percussion artists was indeed there where one is for main and the second for pallavi. But this kind of split where mrudangam plays for one tani and other upapakkavadyam artists play for the second tani is not some thing I have heard , has any one heard this exclusive pakka and upapakkavadhyam percussion tanis?

If my memory is correct ....In this concert... I remember each paercussionist dominating one tani each... and joined hands in equal partnership for the third one.

Arasi,
With the name G Ravikiran you were mistaken as vocal violin and Veena forgotting the indru varuvaNO venu flute. Chek this url for G ravikiran - the flautist
https://www.google.co.in/search?q=g+rav ... B630%3B221
Badari ,
Perhaps you can cross check if there was exclusive tani 1 by one percussion artist and tani 2 by another set of percussion artist etc.
All,
HAs any one heard in the last 70 + years where one percussion artist plays one tani and another set of percusscion artist plays a second tani. If Yes please do share those details.
Finally a cheeky comment,
What if some time in the future an artist by name Veena plays violin , an artist by name Venu plays veena and finally Vi. O. Lingaraju plays venu-flute (Lingaraju's father is vizianagaram OmPrakash ). That would be a great V V V team .

The practice of having more than just one Thani is not unheard of. I've heard stories of how Palghat Mani Iyer, the legend himself played more than one Thani during a concert. So, it isn't the first time that a Shri UKS split the thani, as well. Last year, during the Rama Navami season, I remember this concert of Mysore Brothers (Sriyuths Nagaraj and Dr.Manjunath) with UKS sir on Mridangam and Vidwan Bangalore N Amrit sir on Khanjira. Shri UKS sir played a solo thani for Raghuvamsha Sudha. The thani was mostly in Chaturashra Nadai with conclusive Mohra and Muktaya. During Nagumomu, Shri UKS sir asked Vidwan Amrit sir to play thani avarthanam. Amrit sir then played fulls solo rounds of Chaturashra nadai and ~8 minute Thrishra nadai. The duo concluded the thani avarthanam with a high-on-adrenaline Koraippu, Mohra, and Muktaya.
Incidentally, UKS sir and Amrit sir were accompanying Vidwan Neyveli Shri R Santhanagopalan sir and Vidwan Mysore Shri Dr. Manjunath sir yesterday. The thani turned out to be an extension of the KedaragowLa swara prasthara in Khanda Nadai. It was simply breathtaking to be honest! What started with Khanda Nadai, had textures of Chaturashra and Thrishra Nadais, as well. This time around, there was just one thani and both UKS sir and Amrit sir played incredibly brilliantly to round-off what was an engaging concert! Their thani ended with flourish of fierce exchanges in the Koraippu section followed by Mohra and Muktaya.

Based on thee posts so far ,One percussion artist exclusively playing one full tani and another percussion artist exclusively playing one more tani has happened atleast twice both when shri UKS played . I can safely assume this exclusive tanis by different percussionists is fairly a new thing(unless some one posts some post to counter that) . Perhaps shri UKS felt like when a vocalist sings an alapana of one raga and a violinist can play another raga, why cannot a team of percussion artists play exclusively more than one tani.
While I would love to hear in general a 3 hour concert with just one tani, but even if there is a 3 hour concert when there are two or more tanis it nearly goes back to a 2+ hour concert.

Thanks for your post .
