SikkilGurucharan,RamsevaMandali,FHS 2nd May 2014

Post by arvenky »

Into the last concluding week of the Ramanavami concerts not much to look for except for Vid Manda Sudharani, whom I want to listen at any cost (after her superb concert at Academy in December). Went for Sikkil Gurucharan's concert looking at the impressive pakka vaadhyams. Charulatha Ramanujam didnt turn up at RSM for the 2nd consecutive concert. She was not there at Vijay Siva's also. Sanjeev did the rescue act again 3rd time in a row ( he did for Embar @ Malladi brothers) and didn't disappoint with his lovely returns and especially Karaharapriya alapana.

KVP and Sukanya Ramgopal did gave a splendid thani. Seasoned KVP is a pleasure to (h)ear. Never beat around with high decibel.

List of Krithis sung :
1.Saami Ninne Kori (V)- Sri-Karur Devudu Iyer (N)
2. paalimpa ravEdhElaraa -Arabhi-Pallavi Sesha Iyer (A,S)
3. Balakrishnan Padamalar-Dhanyasi-Sivan (A,N)
4. raghunAta nanu -Suraranjani-Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar
5.raamaa niyeDa-Karaharapriya-Thyagaraja (A,S,T)

PS : Someone at Mandali seem to be browsing through through our continuous rants about the acoustic :-). There were couple of people seen at the dais and at the console box t while the acoustic been set up.

Strange review, this. Sikkil Gurucharan is the protagonist, but not a word about what he did. The pakkavadhyams and another forthcoming artist get mentioned in despatches, along with an improved sound system. Are we to read between the lines and infer, perhaps unfairly that the vocalist was not up to scratch that evening ? Avenky, pray do tell.

After Raama Neeyeda, he sang a short RTP in Kosalam. Pallavi line "Kosalai baala maasila veera aasila rama" in khanda triputa. I may have misheard the pallavi line. Apologies in advance if it is incorrect.

I prefer this to rather than a passing reference in the style of The Hindu art critics!! ("supported ably"..."wielded the percussion"....etc etc)

SKG's concerts are what probably people in the film industry describe as "minimum guarantee" ;)

It was ok that day - and it has always been Ok only and most importantly never NOT OK!!!! ;)

The Cleveland Tyagaraja Festival 2014

Post by arasi »

sirsub,
Good to hear from you :)

Perumal,
:)

A concert is a concert is a concert--may it be good, bad or indifferent, the format is the same (not in all cases!), but they come in different colors. More than that--rasikAs come in even more shades. That's why we have concert reviews, recaps, brief notes, detailed song lists and 'minutes-measuring about RNS' reviews and more. That's how they get to be interesting. RasikAs' levels vary too, in their knowledge and experience. Some of us are just rasikAs and no more. That's why I suppose it's interesting here at the forum to read reviews more than in a newspaper. It's like going to a children's art exhibit than seeing some Kinkade-type landscape after landscape blah show.

sirsub,
I don't think you have visited the Cleveland Festival thread where you may find my impressions of the festival to be scribbles not amounting to much, if you look upon them as reviews. There! I've owned up to it, so that you won't call them disjointed or musical mood-motivated jottings :)

Another thing. We have so many concert reviews coming in every day, and reading only standard reviews will get to be boring. I mean, take someone like kedharam for example. Where else can you find a review like that? Only at Rasikas...:)

There, we digress enough. Sikkil would have given a solid performance after all...

prahlad_nag,

parhaps, 'Silai (bow) vIrA and mASilA rAmA?

Certainly he did !!! Precisely for this reason I like Rasikas.org than any other standard review blogs.
