Manda Sudha Rani was once featured longtime back when a team of rasikas headed by coolkarni organized in a taramani mathematical institute . When was that 2007, time just flies. I did not have a chance to hear her again in a live concert , one of the reason is perhaps her low concert count in chennai . She like another musician Dr Sreevalsan menon have got slots for few years in academy in the main slot , but after academy they almost had zero chances to perform elsewhere .More than music backend power for an artist is crucial , by backend the contacts with the sabha stalwarts , the networking effect is indeed not that highfor manda sudha rani .A case of a very deserving musician not having much breaks to demonstrate her art.
The last concert at taramani was a bit of disturbed throat , but this time manda sudha rani definitely sang a far better concert . There is a striking aestheticness more in madhyama kAlam ,nice pronounciation of lyrics especially telugu krithis, a touch of intense originality and with a flamboyance of extra music centered on pallavi is how I can characterize this concert
Her start in nattai was nice ,DR BMK composition is one of a kind and manda radiated with an arresting sequence of nattai swaras. Sadguru Composition meru samAna of mmg is a master piece #2 drop to me , manda sang very well and i continued to enjoy , in particular the diction of krithi for the neraval was really noteworthy . The ranjani as a submain is always nice the swaras were quite polished with the preceding neraval not creating that much appeal to me. Fillers of different forms in Cayataragini and kalgada were good but manirangu and poornachandrika were a shade better.
Her best was presented exceptionally well in a single raga RTP in mohanam - pallavi is her forte. The alapana was quite measured just enough to be satisfied and also to crib. The taanam was really well done - very well layered with adequate madhyama kAlam sangathis , brighas added to garnish it well and also to keep mohanam at that right enjoyable pace. There is always an added charm in listening to taanam in mohanam. THe pallavi was well done with swaras in mohanam adding the right finish .At most times musicians escaping to ragamaliga abandoning the parent raga and for a change to hear single raga rtp that proves otherwise is always wonderful.
The tukkadas showed her depth in presenting a range of compositions that are usually not heard , The first annamacharya bhujangini?? krithi was emotive and the pAhi kalyana rama is bit light in structure but attimes ligther kApi is also enjoyable . Post pavamana she sang in desh a brief slokham on lines like parvathi devi
Pakkala ramadas played best in mohanam ,he being a disciple of LGJ it just comes too easily. THe early half had a shade of docileness which gradually got eliminated . Phalgun played well but there was quite a lot of mrudangam tuning that he did bit too often . I am hearing ghatam suresh sishya prasanna for the second time and I liked his play , there was a lot of assertion. THe tani was slightly long but overall they teamed up well.
Manda sudha rani voice has a very sustained pitch and she avoids definitely a fluctuation . Mostly it is madhyama kalam and few mandara sthayi touches were noteworthy However there is a noticable conscious effort where she prefers not to go for mel sthayi- if she tries those mel sthayi sangathis , I would have enjoyed much more .
When she finished kalgada where there was heavy exodus , she starting with mohanam rtp is indeed noteworthy , 90% of the musicians dont do it and she doing that is indeed noteworthy.
Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 30 minutes

Really nice review, Rajesh. I have also heard many appreciative remarks about her music. But did not get a chance to hear. As you rightly put it, her opportunities are much limited in Chennai. Hope she gets her due soon.Even Sreevalsan Menon I have heard years back.
