Re: Mridangam Arangetram - Rohit Ashok - May 11 - Ragasudha
A very good concert. It was a full house, with lot of senior musicians in the audience.
1. ajaana thimirandasya jnaananjana salakaya chakshoorunmeelitham ena thasmai sree gurave namaha (shlokam)
1. sarasijanAbha- khAmbhOji- K.Ata thala varnam
2. shrI mahA gaNapati ravatu mAm - Gowlai- M. chApu
3. birAnavara- kalyANi- Adi thisra gathi- R,N,S
4. thAye tripurasundari- Suddha Saveri- K.chApu
5. dAchukovalEnA- thODi- Misra jhampa- R,N,S,T
Had to leave after the thani, post which I assume a thiruppugazh & a mangalam.
It was a very good concert, neatly presented by Smt. Sumitra, with some absolutely exquisite violin accompaniment.
Nice performance by Rohit, which is not surprising, considering the lineage & training that he must have undergone.
It really takes a lot of effort & sAdhagam to keep up the energy levels going throughout the concert, without an upa-pakkavAdhyam support, which he did remarkably, that too for an arangetram. The accompaniment for the varnam & the krithis were all done in chaste pudukkottai style as expected.
The misra-jhampai thani (@ an edam of after 2 aksharams from samam- sOumithri tyAgaraju) was neatly presented, with the traditional sollukattus build up, followed by a thisram & misra gathis. It was here, i personally felt the absence of an upa-pakkavAdhyam support. Not only would that have given a breather to Rohit, but would have greatly given a whole new dimension in terms of variety to the entire concert. That the scheduled duration of the entire arangetram was only close to 90 mins, could have been a reason for the absence of an upa-pakkavAdhyam. The misra jhampai being a Pudukkottai school speciality, felt a bit incomplete, without the sankeerna koraippu.
But on the whole, an energetic performance by the youngster. VidwAn Shri. KSK is doing yeoman service by training and preparing promising torch bearers of this great school and Rohit is definitely one to look forward to.

Shri Chemmu86 Avl,
Thanx for the review. Excellent selection of songs. Missed this great event. Blessings to Rohit. Attended young Akshay's aragetram few years back. Definitely services of Vidwan Shri KSK should be placed on records as he keeps PSP style alive

Most of the arangetrams that I have attended was from Laya laavanya from your esteemed guru UKS . He keeps 2 hours and definitely keeps the upapakkavadyam , usually a high quality EM Subramaniam . EMS taps and helps where mrudangam needs help and more importantly completely passes and gives the baton to the mrudangam artist- kind of craft-fully guiding and also making sure of independence of mrudangam artist is also kept intact . I am only speculating upapakkavadyam for a young mrudangam artist is a better tradeoff . Having said that there is a very conscious choice of different talas in this concert , IIRC mishra jampa is a favourite of Trichy sankaran too and that tala mishra jampai is quite tricky even without sankeerna koraippu. For your arangetram which I knew but could not make it- did you have a upapakkavadhyam and how long was your concert.
Best wishes to Rohit Ashok .How young is Rohit?

It was a very good concert and a very nice event.
Congratulations to Rohit, his family, and, of course, his guru.
I hope we do see Rohit on the concert stage, although we might have to wait a while as I guess he is at an age where school is very demanding.
