My first guess was Manakkal Rangarajan.
Vairamangalam and Makkal seem to have a similar bANi.
Good stuff

BTW, the full concert may be found here: http://www.sangeethapriya.org/Downloads/vsl/1/
I was blown away by Lalgudi's accompaniment. Absolute genius in the neraval sections of this song!
VK: Yes, he does sound like Manakkal in parts. But if you follow the music of TK Rangachari (maybe Varsha will be kind enough to post a few more gems), then you can see how much Vairamangalam has imbibed from him. I think it is the TKR connection that endeared folks like LGJ and Sankaran to him. Vairamangalam is one of CM's forgotten heroes.
In some sense, the following words that I took from a blogpost on him capture it so well.

Vairamangalam's swara singing was something else, the sort that kindles the listener's imagination. It was neither kanakku-based, nor the sarvalaghu technique of the Semmangudi school, but spun original blends where raga meshed into rhythm currents.

Varsha-ji - Now that you are at it, how about them both? ymwhisle
There are so few who know and appreciate the music of these titans! I just wanted people to see how Vairamangalam's bhairavi was inspired by his guru TKR's version. I'm sure you have just the right clip. Thank you in advance.
And the home video concert is on youtube. here is his kiranavali https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muRAmethH8o I presume this is what you mean.

The right clip .
I have one just hot from the oven.
You can be sure it not to be found anywhere. Yet another institution dared to throw away thousands of tapes meticulously recorded over decades . Team R has once again spent a fortune in retrieving some bits of heritage before the crushers moved in .
Among these is a lovely Vairamangalam concert . He is well past his prime , can be seen to be struggling with his voice and ... right at the correct moment 40 minutes into the concert the musicianship takes charge . The TKR brand of Master and disciples singing in unison comes to the fore and it is heavenly . He makes a short speech on the benevolent nature of his master at the end .
A true Nadopasaka . What a dear set of masters - TKR - Vairamangalam . I adore them.
Pl keep watching this space .

Kumudial Ganguly, aka Ashok Kumar?
With UKS and THV?
But, how could this be? It is perplexing.
May be I am wrong.

Sl No 13-Kanjadalaya In the list of TKR gems, Varsha I guess it is Vairamangalam. Classy rendition. Do you havevarsha wrote:http://www.mediafire.com/listen/12344ls ... Sastri.mp3

any link for the whole concert? Sounds like LGJ (or T Rukmini?) on violin. I am curious to know abt the whole
concert, because Kanjadalaya does not figure in any of the concerts of TKR which are in public domain.
What a guru & shishya combination TKR/VL were :-BD I really wonder at the maginimity of Sri TKR in giving
VL so much space and bring out his potential. Do you ever see such a thing now?

Re: Identify the artist please.....
there is concert which I have loaded here in which he talks about his Gurus technique of giving away precious slots in the concerts to the disciples..the speech comes towards the end .he also admits to doing that in the concert he was finishing and asks for support to youngsters.dbaswin is the one who gives a rocking alapana.
he narrates another small story about himself.i will leave it to you translate into english and post it here..
the beauty of shishyas chiming in is about the way move in and out.one can easily discern what is the part thst can be taught and what belongs wholly to the Guru

I could recognize Ganguly sraight away, but how did he find himself in this ensemble was my puzzlement. Well, bengalis are music-minded and his brother acted, but went on to make a career out of play back singing.
Varsha,
Has Ashok Kumar sung any of his own songs in movies?

Varsha, tell us more about that AK – UKS – THV photo; when and where it was taken. They all seem to be having a fun time.
Also, why is THV’s ghatam all smeared or covered up like that?

Varshas tryst is with seeds. And does best , given the circumstances.

This snap of PSP should perk you up :-!
from Readers DigestWhen I was young, I wanted everything and all at once, until our old Scottish Minister explained things to me like this:
One night he dreamed that he saw a new shop in the High street. He went in and saw an Angel behind the counter. Nervously he asked what the shop sold.
“Everything your heart desires “ the Angel said.
“Then I want peace on earth “ cried the Minister.” And an end to sorrow ,famine and disease”
“Just one moment “ smiled the Angel. ”You have’nt quite understood. We don’t sell fruits here. Only seeds”.

Re: Identify the artist please.....
A few of us students of Sri. Vairamangalam S. Lakshminarayanan are planning to get together and have an informal meeting to discuss and celebrate the life and greatness of the vidwan, whose genius filled music never reached many. We would have some friends, students and musicians who were very close to Sri. Vairamangalam say a few words about how he influenced them and their music. We also plan to play clippings of his concert recordings as a first step towards the idea of releasing a CD of his music. If anyone has interesting anecdotes to share about Vairamangalam mama, it would be great if you could attend the meeting and share these with everyone. If you are unable to physically attend the meet, please post your experience/anecdote in this thread and one of us students would be more than happy to read it out. All fans of mama's music, anyone who knew him and all those who would simply like to listen to a sample of his music, are more than welcome to attend the get together. The meet is proposed to be held on August 8th in Besant Nagar, Chennai. More details about timings, venue and agenda of the meeting will be updated in this thread shortly.
Below is a link to a Valaji ragam sung by Sri. Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan, for those who haven't already listened to it.

Purist, Mahitha Pravridha is one of the Lalgudi Pancharathnams and the entire set of kritis have been popularied by Lalgudi and his sishya parampara. There is one commercial vocal rendition of the entire set by Lalgudi and his students. GJRK plays now these songs frequently. I have got a concert of Abhishek Raghuram singing all these kritis.
