PERCUSSION TRIO PERFORMANCE IN KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN

Kalamazoo College, the oldest educational institution in Michigan, organized a percussion trio performance featuring three generations of the Guruvayur Dorai/Pazhani school on May 21st. It featured technically three generations of this venerable lineage. Arguably, this is the first of its kind in the US. The program, well publicized and well funded, began with a 10 minutes introduction to South Indian percussion by Dr Rohan Krishnamurthy followed by a 45 minutes display of the basic thalam Adi by the three artists in which each one vied with the other to demonstrate the possibilities that are available. The 45 minutes concert received a 10 minutes standing ovation and the audience appreciated the fact that it was not too short or too long. It was a success in a town which is steeped in Western classical Music and Broadway Shows.
