Occasion: Mali's remembrance Day organized by Ramani's Flute Academy.

After the customary speeches and a speech by RV, started around 6:55.

Had to leave then. Believe it was streamed by parivadini and available in youtube. Have to go listen to the rest of the concert.

Q: would kannnadagowlai sound suddhadhanyasi'sh?

Hi
Could you please post the youtube link for this concert?

I think KannadaGowlai sounds a bit like Abheri (not karnataka devagandhari). But KannadaGowlai is very much a raga of it's own.

Looking forward to enjoy the concert.

Another great concert from Smt RV and her accompanists.

She sings for SPIC MACAY, at IIT on 9th June.

Kannadagowlai is treated differently by Thyagaraja and by Muthuswami Deekshithar.

In the Thyagaraja tradition, one needs to walk the knife's edge to ensure one doesn't bring in phrases from Karnataka Devagandhari/Bhimplas/Abheri (the version with chathusruthi dhaivatham).

In the Deekshithar version, Kannadagowlai admits of phrases that would stray into that territory.

Some 6 weeks back, Sri B Krishnamurthy talked about "Allied Ragas" or "Ragas with the Same Name but Different Characteristics" at a lec-dem sponsored by the Karnatik Music Forum. He specifically talked about Kannadagowlai and the different versions as exist in the Thyagaraja and Deekshithar schools.

I wasn't present at the Vedavalli concert so I don't know which version she rendered but I daresay that, she being a stickler for tradition, she would have rendered it with Abheri-ish phrases.

There is no typo, what i mean't was in KannadaGowlai i can sometimes feel phrases of raga Abheri appearing but i have not yet thought of Suddha Dhanyasi when i hear the raga.
Also i think in some schools Abheri is not the same as K. Devagandhari, there are some drier phrases in Abheri (Veenabheri, Deekshitar etc.,) as compared to the full melody of K.Devagandhari.
