eBook Title: Soul of Music and other music stories from South India

Set amidst Chennai's exclusive music community known for its fondness for classical/Carnatic music, cricket and determinedly staid ways, Soul of Music and other music stories from South India is a debut collection of ten short stories written in the literary fiction genre.

Here, an improvised life—mirroring elements of music and writing—exposes the secret of a music connoisseur; a musician sets out into the music city to find the soul of music; a music teacher’s ambition and greed for fame and fortune affects her singer son; a retired banker wife fading into dementia avenges her philandering US-returned professor husband; and so on…

Priced at only $1.99, the eBook (first of its kind) is available at the following bookstores along with free sample story:

Bought the book for 120 rupees. Seems author is some Anant Acharya (pseudonym) - freelance writer and editor and Carnatic musician.

On second thoughts, why bother abt the author... how will knowing the kula, gotra etc of the author help sales? the post anyway says debut collection or something like that. So obviously the guy is some unknown chap. Read the sample thing, if its good, buy it, else dump. Simple.

Short review of the book:

Review 1: 'This collection is very well done. It is nice and sensitively written looking into some aspects of Indian culture particularly South Indian, and it weaves in some philosophical and moral issues that may be applicable to all cultures. In that respect, the stories reveal the author's worldliness and wisdom. And that's a good thing.

Sometimes, I struggled quite a bit to identify the characters. My unfamiliarity with male and female first names added to the confusion, as did the culturally correct places for men and women to sit in cars or taxis. The mechanics of who was looking where in the taxi was confusing.

As a teacher of fiction writing, I feel the author's command of the English language is wonderful.'

Finished the book. A new attempt, surely, something that nobody has yet thought of. Stories are classy. Some of them seem to expose some realities in the music world. Overall, I'd say its appealing and really interesting.

Regarding this book:
1) This was my first attempt to download anything onto the Kindle App on my iPad - worked beautifully!
2) Lovely stories - could have done with some editing to make the language tauter and more impactful - also, felt that one of the stories meandered just a bit, but otherwise a great read.

There are many options:

1. When you buy from Amazon, the kindle software will also be downloaded along with the book. So you don't need to buy kindle device or any such thing. In fact, I don't have a kindle reading device. Just downloaded from amazon itself.
2. At the Smashwords site, you can download the book in any format including pdf. http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/433347 . There is also an epub reader available for download - all are softwares. No need for any separate reading device.

If you are not sure, try downloading the sample text in kindle or any other format, then buy the book.
