Hi everyone!
Iam new to this site and am very happy that such a site is there exclusively for carnatic music.I learnt vocal music upto varnams but due to the tight schedule of engineering and stay away from home,i couldn,t continue further.
But i tried playing a flute (for quite a long time) and with the help of some computer programmes that correct me on playing any wrong notes,i have improved and now i can play varnams and film songs satisfactorily.
But if any of you know any site giving mp3s or any downloadable format of flute pieces, please let me know them.
Also if any Flute player is there in this site please guide me..

Thank you so much for KSG's flute - his music is so conducive to repose. Many years ago, when KSG toured the US, he performed with M. Chandrasekharan and Guruvayur Durai. It was one of the best concerts I had ever attended. Three masters who needed no gimmicks. It was music you could listen to forever. Such Sowkkiyam is rare indeed!
Sri Kulkarni, would you have any renditions by S. P. Natarajan - he died young, and not many people know about this flautist?
Perhaps wrong place for this part of my post - do you have any renditions of other Varnams, esp those that are rarey heard, in ragams such as Nagaswaravali, Devamanohari, Kamalamanohari etc.?

BN Suresh. Will pick out some nice tracks.
Chitra
can you give me a short list of ragas of rare varnams (instead of just the three)
I have been converting to mp3 - all the tape lessons from the Madras University Correspondence Course - That is Mainly Tami Isai .So some of the rarer ones may pop up there .
Apart from that Since i have no quick way of scanning my catalogs , a full list would be more helpful.
Is there anybody around here who can help convert catalogs(in Word , or even excel ) to some kind of a Data Base where we can query and locate ragas/krithis/accompanists/venue???

I apologise for this tardy reply, but...
I believe KSG toured the US in 1996 autumn. Some items in the concert I attended were: Navaragamalika Varnam, Thera theeyaga raadha, Bala Gopala (main piece), RTP in Ranjani.
Any luck with S. P. Natarajan? I recorded one of his concerts from AIR when I was in Chennai last; unfortunately, the tape is in India.
I also can try to help with text-to-Database conversion.
Re: Varnam - for starters, we rarely hear this one - it employs 9 rAgams from both Gana Raga Panchakams, it was composed by Kalahasthy Venkatasami Raja, and begins with the words, "Intha kopamelara".
Many thanks,
chithra

rajafan...
thanks for the lead...
wish i had known when Sowmya visited my home the day before yesterday-we spent most of the time listening to hindusthani and discussing forums/archives like this one .
She did mention about her Father having an enviable collection of tapes of the masters , but soon the focus shifted to artists like sk, tmt, viswanatha iyer,somu..
anyway , i will try to get the music if it is available.

I did not want to disturb you.I remember you mentioning that you were busy.
I must owe it all to the power of the Internet and people like you with such forums.
It all happened because of my upload of Ramnathans video .
Though I had kept repeating to her that I would drop the video myself at their office, I must admit that I was very much surprised at her decision to drop in .And ofcourse all of us found her to be so simple and unassuming.
It was heartening to take requests for Hindusthani tracks to be played , while we discussed.
The discussions did veer around to chembai.com and Ramnathan Iyer said he knew you and your site. and I saw him explaining a few things to Sowmya about the kind of discussions we engage in.
And ofcourse she did finally say after what was a memorable 100 minutes , that she would be coming again .

See! I wonder whether the whole story would have come out had I not asked... :wink
I should add here for the benifit of others that our coolkarniji is too modest to say things like these on his own, and I’m sure we will get information about other artist visits if we dig deep enough. He is not only a goldmine of music, but also I guess, of “live” anecdotes.

The sum and substance is that this forum will be blessed by the infusion of ideas and contributions from the knowledgeables in CM. Thanks to you folks who work tirelessly towards that goal expending your physical, mental and material resources. praNamAmyahaM |
Now we need good ideas and active participation from all of us Rasikas. Please comeup with lively topics where the experts can educate and enrich our knowledge base.
Lastly may i request chembai to makesure that he shields this forum from any future disasters. It will be a shame to lose all the valuable contributions with one fell stroke!

Chitra,
This info about BN Suresh was posted by one of his Rasika in Rasikapriya groups sometime ago.
"I have been enchanted with B N Suresh's flute music for a long time.
The tonal quality of his flute reminds me of Chembai Vaidyanatha
Bhagavatar's voice. Suresh, who died of of natural causes at the
relatively young age of 44 in 1990, was very well known in Karnataka
but was only selectively known outside (Sudha Raghunathan, the vocalist
lists him as one of her favorite instrumentalists along with S
Balachander and Chitti Babu). I would easily put him in the same class
as Dr N Ramani.
As far as i am aware, his discography consists of just 2 albums - one
which has an excellent Hemavathi ("Sri Kanthimatim" of Muthuswami
Dikshitar) and a sweet "Kanjadalayatakshi" in Kamala Manohari (also by
MD), among others (HMV STHVS 56903). He is accompanied by Lalgudi
Jayaraman, Vellore Ramabhadran, and Bangalore Venkataram. This is a
must have. The other album is of Purandaradasa's kritis accompanied by
Mysore Manjunath (violin), Praveen (mridangam), Bangalore Venkataram
(ghatam), and H P Ramachar (kanjira) - this is so-so. If you are aware
of other albums by him, please let me know. I wish All India Radio
releases his radio concerts from its archives.
Suresh's style was characterized by strong, clean, and clear tone
without any hiss and an incredible control over laya (you can time him
with a stopwatch - i have seen him in concerts become irritated with
the mridangist or the violinist if they tended to speed up or slow down
- he would put down his flute and start keeping the tala!). Like Mali,
he also used a high pitched flute (5-kattai) believing that it was only
when the flute was played at 4 or 5 kattai, that its sweetness, beauty,
and clarity came through. His style (bani) was his own, having taken
lessons on the flute only for a short while - he admired Mali an was
influenced by him but did not try aping his style. His guru, i
believe, was the ghatam/mridangam player, Bangalore Venkataram who
taught him by singing and having Suresh vocalize on the flute. He has
also said that he was influenced by the Alathur brothers. A Suresh
quirk is that he sometimes got into a manic, fast, and almost
repetitive playing of swara passages with staccato notes (in the
Purandaradasa kritis album he does this in the swara prasthara for the
kritis in Vasantha and Shubha Pantuvarali). He does not seem to have
done that in the concert posted at www.rasikapriya.net, though i have
not listened to it fully.
To mark his first death anniversary, a number of rasikas and musicians
from Bangalore and Mysore released a booklet called, "Poet of Flute".
The book has a decent biography of him and a few articles but it soars
because of the photographs it has - it has one of Suresh, as a boy of 9
in "knickers" (shorts) sharing the stage with Mali and another where he
is the main artist again in knickers (age 12 or so) with M S
Gopalakrishnan on the violin!"
