World music as in fusion, or as in music being celebrated all over the world on a special day, with children and grown ups taking part in it in any given place? In this context, I would think the latter, and that's fine by me.

Unicef Day is observed all over the globe, and not with all the children of the world coming together in one place. Children observe it by collecting money in their own neighborhoods, to send to needy children in the rest of the world.

Let's just say, it's a day in a year when music is celebrated, as on Halloween, children are encouraged to think of other children and collect money for the Unicef fund :)

There are a lot of good programs there in Chennai, in schools, malls and on the beach for rasikAs to enjoy...

Great Maestro Yehudi Menuhin with acceptance of UN, the World Music Day was declared and being celebrated. It was conceived to celebrate the Peace, through Music of artists, World wide with Intent of compassion, love, sacrifice and peace and content to espouse this noble cause, in unity of spiritual, Human spirit. Naada's waves of frequencies permeating the World, ushering Peace and Prosperity.
In this Intent, spirit, artists have to Deliver the Content. Each one of us to be also with celebration of Music, with the similar spirit.

"One's dedication to a cause is defined by one's enthusiasm in seeking every opportunity to celebrate it." - Anonymous*

Let's not belittle this initiative, it calls for a lot of effort to put it together and we rasikas are the biggest beneficiaries.

Music is the only language in which one cannot say an unkind thing.
How wonderful would it be if we were to all converse in rhyme
From memory of what Oscar Wilde wrote somewhere.

The beauty is that Carnatica takes every opportunity available ( or not :p )to celebrate.
To celebrate life is the simplest way of saying thanks to our maker

If it is World Music Day, rather than World-Music Day, then celebrating with our local music alone is just fine!

My teacher has told me about an episode about the celebration of a World Music day in the 50s. [This was long before the current celebration of French origins began] The Radio station at Madras decided to produce a special programme, and asked Vid.Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao, who was then the principal of the Central College of Music to direct a 5 minute sample that would be 'representative of all the variety, depth and glory of Indian Classical music'.

Sandhyavandanam refused to record the programme in advance and said that the artistes would perform live in the given time slot. The programme was broadcast live. It featured two persons strumming a pair of excellent tamburas, well-aligned in Sruti and tempo for the full duration of five minutes!!

Adiyokka yugamu...

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a World Carnatic Music Day!

Munirao, "World Music," as a tag vaguely meaning something not of mainstream Western origin is a bit strange. On the other hand, if World Music Day means a worldwide celebration of all music, then I'm all for it. In fact... it should be every day! :)

I want to inform the correct state, historically. Your Guru's information to you is partly correct. The live performance in the late 40's was in connection with AIR celebration, not a World Music Day. SSRao, as a program executive, AIR Vijayawada and DR.BMK, assistant in the AIR Production, AIR, Vijayawada, jointly worked on a Vadya Vrinda performance, rated as one of the best productions and broadcasts of AIR. This production started with two tamburas, tuned to perfection (by SSRao, also known for this technique) playing for few minutes. Maestro Malladi Suribabu garu recalled the experience, as told to him by Maestro Annavarapu Ramaswamy garu, when I met him at Gayana Samaja, where the 'Kalavanta' contest was conducted by KFAC. The golden era in the annals of AIR, AIR, Vijayawada, in particular with SSRao as a Senior Maestro with juniors like Dr.BMK, Voleti, Nedunoori, Nookala, Srirangam Gopalaratnam, Vaidehi, Annavarapu Ramaswamy, Dandamoodi Rammohana Rao, Yella Somanna etc. It is unfortunate that AIR does not value, SSRao, a emiritus producer and remember his immense contribution. AIR, Bengaluru does not even broadcast his recordings of concerts, to my knowledge for well over twenty years.
When UN and Yehudi Menuhin had planned to celebrate 'World Music Day' - Music for the World Peace for the first time, Yehudi Menuhin had written to SSRao, Principal, Central College of Carnatic Music, Madras for his suggestion. SSRao suggested playing the perfectly tuned two tamburas as a opening piece. The idea appealed to Yehudi Menuhin, he implemented this suggestion. Yehudi Menuhin, sent a letter to SSRao that this was the best part in the program, reflecting the declared theme and ideal. This rare appreciation letter is in the records of, now known as, Tamil Nadu Govt.Music College, Chennai. KVN Sir, mentioned about this in his Presidential Speech, presiding over Music Academy annual conference, when this Great Maestro was honored as 'Sangita Kalanidhi'.

Seema,

Thanks for the links to one of the brilliant article and by the maestro Srinivasan. His observation on the event management in Western Music Conferences, unfortunately not a different experience in our Indian Classical Music also. The present generation of practitioners and rasikas should get the benefit of such great observations and work individually and collectively to end this malady of unmusical practices. This is possible only with direct connect, communication, understanding and coming together of the artists and rasikas in the education and event management. The history of management separately till now has not been successful e.g.Thyagaraja Vidwath Samajam, Chennai and Karnataka Gana Kala Parishat, Bengaluru. The success of Carnatica -Vid.Sashikiran, Vid Sowmya and Team, is one good example to strengthen these initiatives-Pallavi Darbar. The other good initiative of Vid.TM.Krishna, Vid.Bombay Jayashree & Team-svanubhava. With rasikas dedicated and committed support, many initiatives in all the centers of Indian Classical Music will attain success, benefiting the Indian Classical Music fraternity.

Yeah, it is strange, I agree. It was all started by that 'father' of ethnomusicology - an extension of anthropology - Charles Seeger. Anything other than Western classical was promptly tagged world music (esp exotic ethnic music). Our Veena actually falls under the folk instrument category, according to a German museum!

World music is a euphemistic tag to all the 'other' music (sometimes meant derogatory by the snobbish classical guys) and when they say classical, it means Western classical only... :ymsigh:

A few years back, during the chennai music season there was a world music event where only non-indian music was featured. :)
