Meena, thanks for the Nusrat links! Some reminescences...
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Haq Haq Ali Ali was one of my earliest favorites. What a range he possessed, what devotion and spirituality in his reneditions...nice to see a video of his. In my opinion, the world lost a true great when he passed away. He bridged so many distant cultures so effectively with his great music.
Went to our own Dr. Mangalampalli BMK's concert tonite, what a voice he has even at age 76...he could easily traverse all the three octaves with complete control in his voice and a twinkle in his eye...gosh, the upper S was child's play for the genious....and he sounded so good!! I've heard that the everloved Sri KVN was such a fan of DR. Mangalampalli's, that he would sit in the front row, and watch his concerts, marvelling with wonder and amusement at the maestro's range...
He is scheduled to get a Sangeetha Sagara award tomorrow in NJ, by CMANA. For SSIyervAl, CMANA had to present the award in India bcoz iYERVaL had made a promise to his guru that he would never leave the Indian shores...
I wil write more abt the concert later this week....

NFAK is something else, isn't he! What an energy, range and building up a frenzy!!
So, what they show in Hindi movies about 'throw'ing money at the performers does happen indeed I have never been to such a concert, so all the education is from movies..
I do not know what is all going on in a Qawaali...Are the full suite of HM ragas employed? Are the lyrics/poetry extemporaneous? I don't understand the meaning of any of the lyrics...what are the typical subject material of the lyrics? Religious, secular or something in between? In some segments, this has some resemblance to our 'Villu pAttu', hasn't it? ( I know it is a stretch
).
And, the Rajasthani folk song sounds very much like Sindhu Bhairavi, right? ( HM Bhairavi ).

VK here is another link.
My mind goes back to the times I attended Qawwalis in my native town , Harihar karnataka.
We would be busy playing carrom in dingy rooms , adjoining the mosque.the rooms would be full of smoke , with some outstanding professional players playing for prize money and then a call would ring : Qawwali to start shortly.
In a few minutes the room would be empty and all of us would be squeezing ourselves into vantage positions in the nearby open ground. There would be smell of cheap scent all over and it would be a all-male audience .
The qawwali would start at around 11 pm and the mood would be electric.!
The first thing that would strike anybody is the use of the khanjira kind of device and the resounding beats -and that silken lead voice which would ring out boldly - they would definitely be reaching out to the stars.
I have seen such fervour matched only in abhang sessions in the small pandurang temples.
As a tiny tot, If I would be worried about getting lost in the qawwali crowd ,
at the pandurang temple , it would be fear of getting trampled under the feet of the main singer .
Call it ecstasy or a frenzy , it was music to beat the living daylights out of you.
So much has changed since then.Riots , killings during ganesh Utsav , Police outposts in those sensitive areas ....
But those memories are still so green in my mind-everytime i hear an ahirbhairav (or a chakravakam) sung beautifully , I can recapture the mood and well, even the fragrance of those wonderful evenings.

Thanks for that link and the recollections, Cji.. Adam Nayyar's article provides gret info, though scrubbed for the most part the Indian connections
The following caught my attention.. ( emphasis mine )
"....an intangible interplay between form and content, dwelling on certain words to give them a wider context, creating great depth in the apparently simple language of certain Sufic texts. The qawwal often dwell on one phrase or sentence, indicating both the obvious and hidden content by emphasizing and repeating various words and syllables, taking the audience into the discovery of hitherto not obvious meanings. A spinning wheel thus changes from a household instrument into the wheel of life or the wheel of hope depending on the shift of emphasis in one sentence...."

This is not a video link but just an audio one...
You need an hour to go through this...a good talk about the sabhas of the past 100 years in Madras with interwoven musical tidbits about CM personalities of yesteryears...
Public lecture delivered by music historian V. Sriram on August 25, 2005 under the auspices of the Madras Day Celebarations, 2005

Great stuff Cji. Kedar is all the way CM Hamir Kalyani right? It is an entirely different experience to enjoy the Q`li energy/frenzy with a familiar and known raga. The Ahir-Bhairav piece is also excellent in its own right thoughI could not relate it much to the bit of Chakravaham I know.
BTW, Adam Nayyar states that Q'li pieces end suddenly. I figure it is not as sudden as the way the clips end... it is just where the clip happened to be cut off..just checking

From now on, you can embed the youtube videos in these discussion pages by putting them within in youtube codes when you create your post, like the following example:
It shows up the video like this:

Excellent.
---
It seems these guys are so tired of playing as sidemen, that they suddenly become the main artists, making MLV the accompanist!
