Post by venkatakailasam »

Raga TanukIrti..

This raga,is not to be found amidst the 72 melakartha ragas....or janya ragas.
However, MD has composed a song in this raga
CidaMbara-naTarAjamUrtiM--TanukIrti--misra-cApu..

This is rendered by Shri TMK..

I would like to know the scales.....
( refer http://pianoencyclopedia.com/scales/raga-tanukirti/)

Sir, this Kriti is available for download at Sangeethapriya's MD Tribute page. Rendered by Sri TMK with Dr RSJayalakshmi on Veena. The scale etc are played first, enabling one to learn the Kriti.

Sri, Venkatakailasam, it is a melakartha raga called tAnarUpi. It is called tanukIrti in the nomenclature MD followed.(asampUrna mela system)

From karnatik.com

tAnarUpi (tanukIrti)

6 tAnarUpi mela
Aa: S R1 G1 M1 P D3 N3 S
Av: S N3 D3 P M1 G1 R1 S
Janya ragas
Songs:
vA vElavA - KI

Called tanukIrti (S R1 M1 P N3 S - S N3 D3 N3 P M1 G1 M1 R1 S) in the Dikshitar (asampUrna mela) system

Rajani,
Thank you for identifying where it came from.

VK and VK,
This is impressive but sounds different (to me). MD's version of the rAgA sounds stuccatto when Koteeswara Iyer's 'vA, vElavA' has a lot of kuzhaivu.
