So very happy to hear the news. PraNAms to TVG. His many gifts as a musician also includes his encouraging the younger generation of musicians, big and small.

Yes, the mode of awards may take a new turn of alternating the physical age of the recipient, who knows? When it comes to richness in musical experience, how can we not think think of Ravikiran next?

TVG by the way, is as young as they come, given his age :)

Sangita Kalanidhi 2014 - who is it this time?

Post by satyabalu »

He deserves for his multifaceted Vidwat being a performing vocalist ,percussion artist, promotes the art , organises events, grooming disciples to become performing artists(Kadri Gopalnath,Violin Varadarajan,GhatamSuresh to name a few) besides being a composer.More than all these for his Adyantha Guru Bhakthi ..Good selection by MA .

I think he deserves the recognition by virtue of his being a leading mridanga vidwan alone (of the standard of Sri Trichy Sankaran, Sri Guruvayur Dorai, Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman etc).

A very Happy selection by MA, TVG with multifaceted talents and contributions, very richly deserves this honor by MA and Karnatik Music fraternity. One very rare quality of this great artiste is in spotting the talents and striving very hard to give them the opportunities to realize their potential and become popular, in quick time. All the names were mentioned in the Hindu, but glaring omission was immensely talented Sri Rajkumar Bharati. TVG Sir remains young ever in mind and spirits, age defying.
I recollect the speech of late T.T.Vasan, then president of MA, conferring title and honor of "Naada Brahmam" of Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai on Sri TVG, congratulating TVG Sir, told that SK is due to this great vidwan, in the year January,1994! MA took 19 more years to fulfill the promise of its past president.
It now appears that the policy of shifting to younger generation was made only to accommodate the honor to Sangita Kalanidhi Smt.Sudha Raghunathan. Complete reversal is most welcome.

It is interesting to note that MA selected artist, who doesn't perform every year in their platform.. When did he last perform in MA - either as vocalist or accompanist ?

I am still very happy, and I am happy too for the award to Leela Samson. I think The Hindu might have given her a headline today as well, rather than just a footnote. Still, her picture was there.

Congrats to a well-deserving artiste. Apparently I was wrong in making too much of the President'(MA)'s remark purportedly made last year regarding MA's wish to turn to new "generation"--better late than never!!!
An anecdote concerning TVG and the lale Chembai purportedly made in the MID-FIFTIES when TVG was trying to "break thro" the conventional scene in Mridangam playing(with the special preparation of the right side and trying to "upend" PMI's ascendance.)
When Chembai--an early supporter of TVG ---true to his (Chembai) custom of encouraging young talent--was apprised of TVG's "innovations"(this was the same time when BMK.TRS's stars were in the ascendant--they were all admirers of TVG),he is said to have remarked to TVG in his own chaste malayalam-tinged accent:
"YENDA GOPALKRISHNA--NEE ELLORUM NAPPADHU(FORTY) VAYASILE SEYARADAI NEE IRUPADHU VAYISILEYA SEYYARAM ,APPO NEE NAPPADU VAYISILE ENNA SEYAPPORAI?"

Rough translation:" Gopalakrishna what MOST people do when they are in their FORTIES YOU have already done in your TWENTIES!!! Now when you get to your Forties what are you going to show?

The award definitely clears Chembai's ambivalence==albeit 60 years later!!!!

An artist with a burst of Creative energy--not a darling of the stodgy institutions in the Fifties in Chennai- still pursued his art with dogged determination and propagated the art encouraging several young artistes in the process.

Belated though it is a richly deserved accolade!!

While there is a whole generation like me who did not know anything about CM in early 80's. BUt TVG giving voice for a special humming in the song anthi mazhai pozhigarathu in raaja parvai movie was so very very very special. If I could say that song was so very special to me was that vasanta or hamsanandi or vasantanandi .

Maestro Illayaraja shares a two liner after TVG got the SK. Apart from TVG singing for raaja parvai , I did not know that he also sang for few songs in two other movies which is mentioned.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/t ... 233233.ece

- Elusively searching of what are the first baby steps that I took for appreciating CM , may be TVG indeed played a a very minor part with illayaraja who played a major part.

I sat in front of TVG as a very young (albeit 40-plus in age) mridangam student taking an exam. It made me very nervous.

He told me not to be nervous, that he was a friend to all music students. Now that I have seen his support and appreciation of accompanists so much younger than him, I can see how true that is.

Case in point:
"ivarkitta oru problem irukku.. ivar vAsikka mAttAr...pADuvAr" (2:34)

"He has a problem. He does not play (the mridangam), he sings (with his mridangam)"

I am personally thrilled that one of my gurujis, TVG sir has been chosen this year. Apart from his incontestable merits as a multi-faceted performer, I would like to share a couple of personal observations, which throw light on his exemplary approach towards the art.

I had the privilege of learning the basics of mrdangam from him when I was about 6 or so, though only for a few months (since I was advised that it would affect my fingers as a string instrumentalist). Spending a few hours in his house every day (he was just 2 streets away at that time) also enabled me to understand the nuances of making/maintaining mrdangams, since sir would have a mrdangam maker spend whole days and supervise every part of the process.

TVG sir is a true artiste in every sense of the term, perpetually inquisitive and innovative - stand for mrdangam as he played, left hand permanent paste, bringing whole octave range of swaras with only gumikki in left hand, to name a few). He has also been instantaneous in appreciating, applauding and promoting talent that he believes in. He brought to light not only his disciples but also several others. I vividly recall the maiden concert of Shashikiran and Kiranavali that he organised, hearing them at home when they were 9 and 6 respectively. He insisted that I accompany them on the chitravina! And Shri Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam was on mrdangam.

I also cannot forget an evening when I was about 7 years old. I just returned home from an outing with my mother to find Shri T V Vasan at our doorstep. He told me that his brother wanted me to rush to their place immediately since Chembai sir was visiting them. I don't recall what I sang but I recall the wonderful Saraseeruhasanapriye that Bhagavatar sang immediately afterwards and blessed me. I also cherish another occasion when he took me to a concert by Shri Alathur Srinivasa Iyer with Palghat Mani Iyer and probed me in closely at the end of it, to see how much of minute details I had absorbed! Needless to say, he has encouraged with his accompaniment from my 13th year and we played many memorable concerts including at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Someone told me that one of our concerts - a TV National Program in Delhi - has been uploaded by someone on YouTube (where my guru in kanjira, Shri V Nagarajan sir also accompanied).

I would like to add yet another instance of TVG Sir's respect and love for the Vidwans. He used to rush to our residence,at Besantnagar, he was living near at Customs Colony, Besantnagar or meet SSRao in the morning Darshan of Lord Varsidhi Vinayakar and walk, every time he performed in 'Arangisai' of AIR,Madras, conveying his appreciation. After one such broadcast, TVG Sir queried, Why he is not performing Sabha Cutcheri, with so many Sabhas in Madras? With his immense vidwath, which won appreciation of all the Great Maestros, including his Guru Chembai mama, SSRao replied that none of them give opportunity to perform. TVG feeling sad at the neglect, He arranged a performance at Varasidhi Vinayakar Temple during that year's Ganesha Chaturthi festival concert series, with TNK, TVG and introducing one of this disciple playing khanjari. He also gave another opportunity in the December Season concerts series of his AIMA at Narada Gaana Sabha Hall with Tiruparkadal Veeraraghavan and Trichur Narendran, in the year 1993, his last concert, SSRao attained moksha in Jan'1994. TVG Sir was selected for 'Naada Brahmam' Title in 1993 by Narada Gana Sabha. TVG requested the Sabha to honor SSRao, also for great contribution to the cause of KM. That was the last honor SSRao received. TVG's answer to SSRao, with respect, in action and demonstration of his support. TVG Sir's this endearing quality, a very rare among Vidwans, is well appreciated by all the Vidwans.

I must confess I have little personal contact with TVG except that I attended a couple of his concerts in Chennai and have listened to several recordings. One concert that comes to mind is the one by Chembai V Iyer in Bombay and the mridangam by TVG was out of this world. He deserves all the kudos for bringing up saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath when the latter was shunned by the Chennai clique based on (1) His instrument is not suited for CM (2) He is not from Chennai (3) He is not a Tambram!. These are not my speculations but narrations I have heard from people who are very close to Kadri.
On a personal note, way back in 1996 when Rohan went to India at his age of 8 to perform in the Music Season, I saw a web announcement (remember such novelties were rare those days) that TVG was organizing a series in Venus Hall and would accept requests from artists to perform. I just sent a casual submission and within a day got a reply" We are fully booked but we have one possible slot on such and such day. There is a gap of 30 minutes between 5.30PM and the main concert at 6PM and we will be happy to have your son play a solo. we were excited and grabbed the chance. TVG sat on the front row during Rohan's solo and at the end came to him asked about his training etc. When Rohan said he is learning from Guruvayur Dorai, he said " I can see that you are a worthy torch bearer of Dorai and you will do him proud. Make sure to continue your interest in mridangam and don't get swayed by your parents'pressure to do medicine and engineering". Of coure what has happened since is history.
The SK award to TVG has made the award famous rather than the other way around. I maintain that is the case with several of the previous SK awardees!

Thank you sweet song for the sweet words and the sweet song which follows in this clip. You can feel the warmth and vibrations of the evening even on a video!
Joy is the word for the whole event. In the welcome, in the performance of the artistes, and in rasikatvam. It's a pleasure to listen to them and watch them--including Swathi's tambUra person, whose super rasikatvam is always a happy thing to watch.

Here's an example of 'oru pAnai sOTRukku oru sORu padam', as we say in tamizh. 'The proof of the pudding'? TVG as a guru is well illustrated by one of his star pupils here. It's not merely his quality of being an exemplary teacher, but his nourishing qualities as a mentor that matter, and we witness it here.

And that's only a part of the new SK designate. His own merits as an artiste of many skills are worth admiring. Of course, his heart and soul play a big part in all this...
A (*) and a (*) maker!
