one of my two favourite musicians from the younger generation. a sublime concert. his voice was a little off today and sounded strained in the upper octaves as it has been for quite sometime now maybe due to him singing too many concerts. but his music was great. simple, unhurried and unadulterated. the highlight for me were his chetashri and reethigowlai. his mohanam alapana was very creative but had a lot of prathimadhyamam and nishadam phrases that i dont particularly enjoy. it was a subtle and fitting finish to the concert that had loads of flavour. one thing i admire about his music is his conviction and his consistency. hope he goes far!
he was accompanied by seasoned musicians hn bhaskar, melakaveri balaji and kvg who were all good in their own right.

Pratimadhyamam, nisadham in mohanam? last time i heard it was pentatonic 8-| . It is, though, listed under santakalyAni in SSP :-B

Showing M2 and N3 in Mohanam, though not fully sanctioned in CM, is not without precedence.
Hindusthani, without any equivocation, puts the equivalent Bhoopali/Bhoop under kalyan that. One of our members SangeetRasik educated us that the P to G transition does slide over M2 without really stopping at M2 and S to D transition glides over N3. I do not know what exactly that 'gliding over' means and also if I can detect it with and without it when sung.
I think RKM's parivadini video is on for a day. Let me see if I can hear the N3 and M2 in his alapana.
I have also read a mention ( or even complaint ) that MLV school brings in N3 and there by making Mohanam more like Bhoop.
(Deshkar with the same scale but giving more prominence in the P to S region belongs to Bilaval ( shankarabharanam ) that. I do not know the glide situation there but we typically do not speak of Deshkar as equivalent of Mohanam so there is not much to rope in for this discussion )

Thank you carnatricks, for the list. I agree that it was a beautiful concert - I was also able to appreciate the vidvAn's confidence and his thorough professionalism.
I got to listen to the concert until the start of the mOhanam AlApana - had to return to earth and take care of some mundane errands that needed to be run. Unfortunatley, the link is no longer active (sigh), but what I heard was superb indeed. I was very impressed with the young vidvAn's pronunciation as well - he sang #4 as baDalika tIra and not baDalika dIra or baDalika dhIra as most people do. I would have loved to hear the Ahiri padam...

Ravi,
Ram Murthy is a local Southern Californian born and raised in Orange County. Your mention of pronunciation and diction is just another example of how hard these youngsters have worked to master this difficult art form. His dedication has to be lauded.
Keep up the good work Ram.
