Meaning request for varalakshmi namOstutE GowriManohari

Post by HarishankarK »

Sanskrit experts, please provide word by word meaning

varalakshmi namOstutE Gowri manohari , chaturasra rUpaka

Pallavi
varalakshmi namOstutE
varadE narahari sukhadE

Anupallavi

aravinda lOchanE -agha brnda mOchane
aruNambuja vara sadanE -amarEndra nuta charaNE

Charanam1
vAsudEva vinuti ratE- vAsavAdi vanditE
bhUsurAdi sEvitE- bhUsura maNi bhUshitE
dAsa jana kalpalatE- darhAsitE subrttE

Mysore Vasudevachar seems to be a great composer and also he is the only one i think who have written many compositions dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, this one, Devi Rame, Sri Hari Vallabhe, am sure there's more.

The line 'bhUsurAdi sEvitE- bhUsura maNi bhUshitE' is extremely beautiful. Eagerly awaiting the meaning for the song. Thanks,

Dear Harishankar,. A lovely pick of a kriti. Thanks.

I have reproduced the text from the official compilation of Vasudevachar kritis published with notation by his famous scribe and grandson S. Krishnamurthy.
The scripting above itself has a disconnect. It shows vAsudEvAdi whereas in the swara notation it is shown as vAsavAdi :( I go with vAsavAdi as you have written.

There is one correction in your SCRIPT. it should be

bhAsuramaNibhUShitE

Song Meaning:
Oh Varalakshmi, obeisance to you, granter of boons and delighter of Narasimha(=Vishnu ).
Lotus eyed one, remover of a host of evils,
Residing amidst golden coloured lotuses, (seated on a lotus), whose feet are bowed down to by the gods led by Indra.
Serving Vishnu as vAsudeva, and worshipped by the gods,
Served by the noble Brahmins on earth, and adorned with brilliant gems,
The wish-fulfilling creeper of the devotees, having a smiling beautiful round countenance (face)

bhU sura - gods (sura) on earth (bhU) - in England, the 'Divine Right' doctrine made kings the emmisaries of God, and sometimes by extension, god himself! I mention this, because when I first started to try my hand at translating, I had interpretted 'bhU sura' to be kings...I have since been corrected! In India, there was a time when learned brahmins were considered to be God's emmisaries on earth. Sri muttusvAmi dIkshitar has used 'bhUsura' as well...

But Ravi, India also places kings at par with Brahmins ...it is in many scriptures including Bhagavadgita, the important precondition being that the kings are more like Janaka and less like Henry VIII or Nero :)
