Chennai A in the weekly Isai pettagam programme today (17.8.2014 : 8.45 a.m.) broadcast a concert of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar (with T Rugmani & T V Gopalakrishnan).

Thoughtful of AIR to have aired this rare tape with Balagopala (Bhairavi) as the main song on Gokulaashtami day!

Other songs were Vaatapi (hamsadwani), Parasakti nanu (saveri)in the first half and sloka (agre pasyami-naraayaneeyam) in ragamaalika at the end. A very good concert.

I request AIR to search the archives and come out with 'unheard' concerts of Vidwans/vidushis!

Today's morning concert of madras- A @ 8.45 - pAlghAt Dr.R.rAmprasaD/nAgai srirAm/tvm.VN.A good spirited concert.his AlApAnai in jayantasEnA was very brisk followed by vinathA with svarams.he sang purahara - hamirkalyANi with engaging round of svarams.the main was mandAri surprisingly.he sang a patnam's kriti that I haven't heard before.good support by accompanists.

was it ninnucheppaga or endhukittu in Mandhari? If it is the latter, do you have a recording of that? last heard Endhukitu from S Ramanatha Iyer in a concert in late 70's.....

On 22/08/14 @ 9.30 p.m bhArati rAmasubban sang a v.g.mukhari.her singing left no doubt about the school she belongs to.she has a metallic voice which only a few artists can boast of.the AlApanai,kriti,N&S all brilliant.the next was mAdhava mAmava in neelAmbhari.the concert was broadcasted for less than 30 mts.to give way to some national prog.hope to hear the full concert some other day.

Today madras-A @ 9 a.m - shyamalA venkateswaran/neelA jayakumar on violin gave a v.g.concert that had all vinAyakar kritis.bhajabhajamAnasa in bahudhAri,a periyasamitooran kriti in rAmapriya witha v,g,AlApanai and the main was an experience backed kAmbOdhi - lambOdharam avalambe.v,g,concert.

Just listened to fm - gold -
J.B,ShrutisAgar ( flute )/mak/pApanasam kumAr.JBS has gained a lot of concert experience and that showed in his performance.the main poorvi kalyANi was v.g.indhapArAmukham Edhu ( a TVS favourite ) was rendered with a lot of feelings.started with siddhi vinAyakam in chAmaram.a.good concert.

So today madras - A @ 9 a.m it was TNR.I have ehard this recording many times yet I can't give it a miss.bhairavi,shanmukhapriyA,kAmbOdhi...there were only short AlApanais.very enjoyable.
Tomorrow @ 9 a.m it will be kasturirangan.so kasturi's fans,pl.tune in.

FM GOLD- daily morning 6.10 AM presents THENISAI-. It will be sthothrams, devotional songs etc in sync with the GOD of the day. It is my routine to start the day with this devotional music. Yesterday, they played a CD of Thirupugazh by Sudha Raghunation. IT was very good. Today they played Ashtapadi by R.Vedavalli and B.Krishnamurthy- It is also commercial album. Ashtapadi sung in traditional ragams. I prefer this than sung in some hindustani ragam.

Yesterday @ 9.30 p.m sankari krishnan gave a decent concert accompanied by VVR/KVP/VAIKOM.
started with asAvEri varnam of LGJ,she proceed to present bilahari as best as possible within her limits.the kriti was nAjeevAdhAra with svarams.the main was sAvEri.srikAmakOti by mysore sadhAsiva rao is a gem in this rAgam which she presented quite convincingly.post tani came madhuvanti thillAnA and a thirupuhazh.

kasthuri rangan's concert was good today morning accompanied by SV/shertala ananthakrishnan.he too started with kEdAragowLai varnam.sub main pantuvarALi ( aparAmabhakti) and main nagumomu ( karnAtaka dEvagAndhAri ) were presented nicely.ended with thirupuhazh in rAgamAlikai.his voice was in good form.

Naa jeevadhara - Going by the situation in which it was composed .I am told this kriti was sung to bring somebody back to life when Thiagarajar was in Tada( Andhra) enroute to Tirumala( open for correction) I prefer this being sung in slow tempo.

Today morning Chennai A broadcast a concert of Gayatri Venkataraghavan at 8.45 a.m.

A varnam in Bahudari, Vachaspati(paraatpara-Sivan) and Kharaharapriya (Satatam taavaka-Swati-with an expansive aalaapana) were the songs which I listened.

Intetrestingly, the varnam (composition of A.Sundaresan) was boroadcast twice in succession. As it is a rare & nice one, I liked AIR's gesture!

GV also sang sri bAlasubramanya in bilahari with an AlApanai.The concert was good.GV herself was enjoying her music singing very freely and naturally that got transmitted to the listeners as well.yes,enjoyed the varnam twice.kum.gopinath/KVP/KVG played in unison and lifted the concert.Good to see main artists playing along with different accompanying artists.That really brings certain freshness to the presentation.

Bhairavi & mALavi sang today @ 8.45 a.m madras- A.I haven't heard them in person.hence don't know their age.but their presentation carried a lot of weight and their method was good.they sang some lovely kritis ninnujoochi-chakravAham,dvaithamu sukhamA - reedhi gowLai and main mOhanam- nArayanadhivyanAmam.their reedhigowLai & mOhanam showcased their adherence to tradition and imagination.VVSrinivasarao and mohanakrishnan supported well.

Ganesh, You got mixed up with some other concert. The first song was Mamava Raghuveera in the rare ragam Maahuri- MD composition. AIR announced as Mukhari.

On 06/09/14 ,madras- A, S.SowmyA gave a wonderful concert.starting with divAkaratanujam in yadhukulakAmbOji,she presented Anandabhairavi in a way that reminded of her guru Dr.S.R.she was just not singing rather she was pouring her heart out.the kriti was sadbhakthiyu of rAmanathapuram SrinivAsa IyengAr.next came nAn oru siru veeNai of periyasAmy thooran in chakravAham.I just loved the song for its poetic content.the main was poorvikalyANI.the kriti was ninnu vinAga of SS.she rounded of with kApi jAvaLi parulannamAta.shertalA ananthakrishnan gave excellent support.meerA sivarAmakrishnan on the violin assisted well.

Really nice program at 5pm yesterday. Smt. Padamaja Srinivasan sang a wonderful program that included Sarasaksha as the main. Neraval and Swaras were done and the way the lyrics were presented was scintillating. Papanasam Kumar on the mrudangam was outstanding. Have never heard of this vidhushi before.

AIR celebrates navrAtri.yesterday it was Dr.subhAshini parthasArathy.it was a decent concert.she sang ST's shankarAbharaNam song as main.I saw a small writeup in Ind.Exp.last week about this year navarAtri mantapam concerts.Dr.baby sreerAm would have started the innings.

Today srirAm pArthasArathy's concert was good to listen to.he too sang ST's kriti in kalyANi.the main was mahAlakshmi in shankarAbharaNam.he follows his paramaguru(TNS) than his guru (NSG) in presentation.started with MMG kriti mayAteeta.UR's violin accompaniment was good.

For the past 2 weeks I was in a beautiful village by name dharisanamkOppu nr.nAgarcoil and happy to share with you that I was able to hear all madras-A concerts through Tirunelveli radio station.I had very less chance to access net.Otherwise I would have posted.

Ganesh, I was missing you for last few days. Glad to know about your visit to the village. Dr. Subashini Parthasarathy's concert was good yesterday.Sriram Parthasarathy, is a good singer I have heard many times. But today, the Kalyani kriti was not presented well. It a difficult kriti too.

In the FM Gold programme at 5 PM, Delhi Muthukumar sang a very good Begada, elaborate, and Sankari neeve as the Main song. It was a very good concert.

Yes,I too listened to Muthukumar partly.he sang initially shuddhadhanyAsi and a kOteeswara Iyer kriti in latAngi.once when I listened to him live,his singing looked like lacking in power & assertion.but his radio concerts are different.another disciple of TNS.But I missed his bEgadA.

Yesterday (8Oct) night, in Chennai A, there was the veena duet of Iyer Brothers-Ramanth Iyer and Gopinath Iyer. The brothers are disciples of Veena vidwan late R.Venkatraman. I do not know whether they learned from KSN also. They are based in Australia and play in Chennai rarely. But we can hear them in December. They played
Saranga varnam
Anandanatanaprakasam
Samaganalole-Hindolam-PS (Ragam, Swaram)
Sree Kanthimathim (Ragam,tanam, swaram, thani)
Marubari.
It was an excellent concert of pristine pure music. Good nadam, patantharam, dexterity, dripping raga bhavam in each phrase all took the concert to a very high level of excellence. Rasikas, who write lengthy posts about support to veena, please spend some time to attend their concert whenever it happens in your vicinity.

Today madras - A - vocal concert of M.Chandrasekharan /MAS/ SRIVASTA.MC opened with a mysore chAmarajawodeyAr item in gambheera nAttai with a round of svarams.next came sreeranjani with a good AlApanai.sang a annamAchAryA song.the main was kalyANI-sundarini.completed with muruhanin marupeyar in behAg.His inspiration for vocal must be GNB.his another maanaseeka guru is TNR.considering his age his voice is still in a good form.a nice concert.

Yesterday, 12 Oct, in the National Progamme there was a Veena concert of Dr.B.Sivakumar. He is a disciple of Ranganyaki Rajagopalan of Karakudi lineage and also have learnt from Chitraveena Narasimhan Sir. I have heard him many times in the Veena festival and appreciated his music. IIRC, he is based in Trichy AIR. The songs he played

Chinthayamakandamoola-Bhairavi
Pahi jaga janani-Vachaspathi-ST
Rama manthrava japiso-Jonpuri
Thillana-Dwijavanthi-Ravikiran.
It was an excellent concert- sudhamana sampradayamana sangeetham. Neat plucking, good sound from two veenas, good patantharam, manodharmam, The alapanas of Bhairavi and Vachaspathi were elaborate. For the main song, thanam was also played. I have not heard such an elaborate Vachaspathi for years- that too with thanam. I am glad that I could hear two very good Veena concerts within one week gap. Thank you AIR

Yestaerday 10 p.m in FM - gold ,MangaLam sankar gve a nice concert.varALi ( mAmavameenAkshi) and madhyamAvati ( kaNNA of PS) were rendered very nicely.srilakshmi venkatramani's violin accompaniment was excellent.

Today vaigal gnanaskandan's concert where he sang his own kritis was satisfactory.the main in sree was good as well as the last one in behAg.among his compositions I like AdipoorathammavE ungaLai vaNaNguhirEn in kEdhAram. I started hearing from the middle.I don't know whether this concert featured that song.

Yes C.Rama Dr.sivakumar's veena concert was v.good.the vAchaspathi he played with tAnam was excellent.

Yesterday madras- A 8.45 a.m relayed a concert of chitoor subhramanya piLLai.I have heard it a few times before.paralOkabhayamulEka in mandAri and an extensive sankarAbharaNam AlAp followed by manasusvAdheenamai.

Night in national broadcast Pt.viswamohan bhat's mohanveena concert was good.shyAmkalyAn was played with such aesthetics to please a larger section of the rasikas.the rainy night and the soothing music combined very well.

Listening to Chembai now.an exhaustive bhairavi followed by bAlagOpala.nice accompaniment by TR & TVG.in bhairavi he sang a tOdi phrase and I am sure that is very much within the grammar.

Chembai was exquisite. Started with Vathapi, then Parasakthi (Saveri) and then Balagopala. Even if Vathapi has been heard umpteen number of times, his alapana of Hamsadhwani in three stages, kanakku swarams, saveri alapana, kriti swaram all were top notch. Not fogetting the excellent Balagopala. TRukmini and TVG performed their role commendably. We can hear such recordings any number of times. No issue.

Today 5.30 a.m,DD podihai telecast had TSSankaran (flute) with V.ThyAgarAjan/UKS/harisankar.mandAri (ninnucheppa),kApi(indhasowkhya) and govindamiha(bAgEsri).a v.g.concert.out of the 4 ,2 are not with us now.

Yesterday night flute was by R.Thyagarajan. IT was very good. After Panthuvarali, surprisingly, there was a padam in Kambodi and thillana in Chenjuruti. I have not heard padams in instruments- especially flute.

The Padam was padharivarugudhu.
I understand that T Viswanathan has played many padams in flute. Collections likely in Sampradaaya at Kalakshetra

Today at 3 p.m., Podhigai telecast a half hour report of a function in tribute to Swati Tirunal held at DD Kendra, Ooty.
Excerpts from the concert of Prince Rama varma (Deva deva kalayaami-M M Goula) was also telecast.

It is Akshay Padmanabhan.
He also sang paraatpara (vachaspati) in the first half.
The boy is obviously a Nedunuri admirer as I could judge from his approach. No acceleration ('oattam').

AIR (Chennai A) broadcast a very old concert of K J Yesudas at 9.30 p.m. on 22.10.2014 (wednesday).

Todi(kadanuvariki) was the main. There was a kriti in praise of Guru Chemabi Vaidyanatha bhagavatar in the first half.

Names of accompanists were announced as M Chandrasekharan(Violin), T V Goplalakrishnan(mridangam) and T V Vasan (Ghatam)

From the 'playing' I noted that the violinist was certainly not M Chandrasekharan. Could anyone find out who the 'real player' on violin was?

Was in Thrissur during the weekend and yesterday listened to this concert broadcast by Thriisur radio station.a vocal concert by N.P.rAmaswAmy accompanied by t.h.subharamanian.pAlakkAd rAjAmaNi and a famous kanjira artist the name resembles a bit of north indian.it was a v.g.concert.he seems to be very senior and matured,his singing reminds one of MDR,i.e taking no pressure but delivering the sublime.

he started with his own varnam in nAgaswaraLi in Adi,his own composition in reeti gowLai invoking gaNapati ( there is resemblance to thathvamariya).the sub main was gurulEka preceded by AlAp and swaram in bit tricky teliyaka.the main was bEgadA - thyaharajaYa with N & S in mukundAti.he completed with bhajareyethunAtam in REvati.the whole singing was erudite.a v.g.concert that had excellent accompaniments also.
