Any pointers to 'Veena Krishnamachari' ? Read somewhere that he is Tiger Varadachari's brother ? Not sure of the connection with Mysore.

Jayan,
You are right about Sri Krishmamachar being Tiger Varadachar's (younger) brother! I think his connection was with Bangalore - I believe he had moved to Bangalore in his final years.

After a long time, I made it to a live concert. Concert by Vani Sateesh was very well planned and executed - and it was very nice to hear composers of Mysuru. The raga and song selection was very nice. One does that hear rishabhapriya often (the only one in my memory is by MLV) - and as our fellow rasika kssr pointed out - the sahitya shuddham was noteworthy. Enjoyed the concert very much, Mathur Srinidhi gave excellent support, I was hearing him for the first time. Wonder who is his guru? The percussion support was well done. The sound systems were w/o any hitches :) Met Jayan and Kssr - after a long time. Thanks much to Vidushi Vani and Nadasurabhi for this thematic format - and an excellent evening. Hope many such compositions are included in "regular" concerts.
P.S: I do remember now Vijay Siva singing rishabhapriya here http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=22599. Also Ashwin played Rishabhapriya - Seshanna Krithi IIRC

Rajeshnath:

S. Ashok plays excellently on the mrudangam too.

Bangalore Brothers are connected with Suswaralaya College of Music whose banner it is behind the artists in the youtube clip.

This college is a well known institution being run by the eminent mrudanga vidwan Sri H. S. Sudhindra.

What is 'Bellary Style' of music?

Bellary style?? eh?? :-p
Critics get away writing gibberish and no artist takes him/her on in a public forum unfortunately.

Vani Satish is a fine artist - in fact of the three artists talked about in this thread, she is my personal pick.
<rant>
To me, S Shankar is too sedate - I don't want to troll but very often such sedate music is hailed as "pure" and "pristine" and god knows what else.
</rant>
Bangalore Brothers are fine but too many rough edges to be polished still - but good and sincere artists and a great song list. Wish them all the best in their journey.

I think you are being too harsh. All the so-called styles - shaili/ bAni etc in South Indian music and dance revolve around the artistic ethos of one individual, but they name it after the place the person is from. Take the dance styles - Pandainallur, vazhuvur etc. or the music styles - the Mysore Veena style or the tanjavur bani.

It is obvious that all vainikas in Mysore don't play in the same way, or that all dance teachers in Vazhuvur don't dance/ teach the same things. But this terminology has come to stay.

Vani Satish belongs to the family of Bellary Seshagiri Achar and Raghavendra Achar, who had forged a fairly distinct style of their own, in terms of presentation as well as repertoire. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to call students of their style as belonging to a 'Bellary' school or style.

While I don't think Vani S's singing reflects that familial style too much, I disagree with your comment on Bellary Style being a case of critics spouting gibberish.

p.s. I think there is greater honesty in names like the Dhanammal bani, since there was a shared set of stylistics in singing and voice modulation, that ran through all the family members' singing; even while they had differences in approach and repertoire.

When I first read the article, I noticed the phrase "Bellary Style" which is not commonly used. I took it as the author saying "Bellary lineage and the pAThAntara that comes because of the lineage"

I have been listening (again!) to the 13 CD set in the series Veeneya Bedagu - Compositions of Veene Sheshanna. There are so many beautiful compositions but they are not heard in concerts at all.
I hope this situation will be corrected by today's performing artistes!

I went thro' the list of songs given by braindrain in the three concerts. Not a single Veena Seshanna. Surprising. I think the popularity of compositions come thro' sishya parampara. Also, I have heard people say that out of the mummoorthigaL compositions, Saint Thyagaraja's are more popular because he had a wider sishya parampara. I am not sure how good is this broad generalisation. There may however be something in that view.

Saint Tyagaraja and Purandara Dasa took music to the common person during Uncha Vrutti ; most other vaggeyakaras preferred to popularise through sishyas and / or books. A larger question : Music for music's sake (technical brilliance) or music beyond technicalities !!
