NAGESWARAN HOBBY NO.2 GARDENING

Post by S.NAGESWARAN »

We used to live in rented house in the early days. Invariably, all houses had some vacant open area then.
My mother used to do gardening works in the opening area by growing vegetables and flowering plants.
From the childhood, I used to help my mother in the gardening works.
After we had our own house in West Mambalam with an open terrace, myself and my mother developed A garden in the terrace and many plants were grown.

When we visited Bangalore in 1990 to be with my son, there was a flower exhibition
at the green house in the Lalbaug Garden by the Krishrendra nursery from Bangalore and lot of members of the public were also attending the flower exhibition.

Normally, I have seen the hibiscus flowers of various colours of red, yellow, white and light pink colours In small size in many homes at Chennai.

In the Bangalore flower exhibition, there were many hibiscus plants with a variety of exotic colours and The flowers were very big in size.
The nursery officials informed me that the hibiscus plants Were called Hawaiian varieties.
Lot of visitors in the flower exhibition were moving around the plants and noting down the numbers from the tags in the plants.
When I asked the nursery officials about the purchase of some plants, they informed me that the plants are not sold at the exhibition now.
He asked me to note the numbers marked in the plants and asked me to visit the nursery next day
Morning after 10.00 AM for the purchase of the plants.
When I visited the nursery the next day, there were lots of people who have selected the plants and paid the money And and kept the plants in separate groups. The visitors were arranging mini lorries to transport the plants to their homes.

Some of the colorful Hawaiian plants that I have selected were not available[already purchased by others].
The nursery officials assured me that the varieties I have noted were available in their farm
and it can be supplied.
I have selected about 30 plants and were to cost Rs. 3000/= after heavy bargaining.

Since I was to Stay with my son and his family for another 15 days, I have paid an advance
And told him that the balance amount will be paid one day before my journey to Chennai and will collect The plants.
I have requested the nursery officials to neatly pack the plants Without any damage.

Then I have told my wife and son that I haven’t spent any money personally to me till that date
And they should not object my spending on the purchase of plants for Rs.3000/= [which was a High
Amount in those days for the purchase merely for the plants].

I will post the drop box link of photos of the flowers in due course.

To be continued.

Dear Nageswaran Sir,
I don't know if music and flowers were made by God for someone like you or you were made by God for music and flowers...
I can say made for each other!
Thanks!

Sri Nageswaran,

Your Hibiscus flowers look beautiful. I was surprised to see the size of the Indian Hibiscus compared to the Hawaiian ones. Never remembered our Hibiscus being so small. Here we have the flower that has two colors in the same flower- The center or throat will be of a darker color and the rest of the flower will be of another color. The Horticulturists are working wonders with flowers.

Thanks for sharing your pictures for us to enjoy.

Nageswaran Sir, Very happy to see the pics of your garden. After your return to Chennai, I will come and see them. I am reminded of the backyard of my house in TVM where we used to have 10-12 varieties of hibiscus along with many other flowers like arali, thetti etc. Verities of hibiscus are very common in many houses in TVM.
In my present house, before the flats were built, there were two lemon trees which used to yield a lot. All our relatives used to come and take them.

Dear Rasikas,
Whenever we make a trip to various countries on tourist visa, we collect some memoralia from various cities we visit.
Whenever we see the memoralias at our home after a long time, we have the “ Malarum Ninaivugal “ in our mind and try to connect to the visit of a particular city we visited.
In a small way, I also collect some memoralia of purchasing some plants and plant it in my home [Pepper plant from Guruvayur when our family went to Guruvayur for the "Annaprasanam" for my grandson ASHRIDH at the Guruvayur temple.
Being in Pune now, I have purchased a few Hawaii Hibiscus plants and croton plants.
The download links of the photos of the plants is will be posted soon [ uploaded in Picasa, but as usual unable to get the links as of now].

Is there a facility to directly post the individual photos instead of uploading and getting the links[which is the usual problem for me to get the links. Poor reflexes due to the age.].
