Rama Varma Sir's Workshop on Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Kruthis organised by the School of Performing Arts of the Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha in association with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGCNA) commenced today with Rama Varma Sir teaching us very rare , brillant and golden master pieces of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal . The Music Workshop started with Varma Sir's favourite raaga Behag and later we learnt Krutis in Anandabhairavi and Neelambari. All the compositions are set to Adi Taala.
The first two Krithis are from Swathi Thirunal's Opera Kuchelopakhayanam.
1. Smaradinu maam sadayam yadupati in raaga South Indian Behag

2. Smarasi pura Guru vanita vachasa in Anandabhairavi raaga tuned by Dr Balamuralikrishna.Rama VArma Sir explained that tune has been made with some rare Antara Gandhara prayogams like Ma GA Ri GA.

3. Ananda valli kuru mudam aviratam , a brilliant and short vilamba kaala kruti in Neelambari raaga on Devi Anandavalli . Rama Varma Sir mentioned that this Devi's Sannidhi is behind the Padmanabhapuram palace in Tamilnadu. Although the palace is near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu , it is maintained by Kerala Archaeological department . Varma Sir told us that the tune of Pallavi has the resemblance with Lingaraja Urs composition Srungara Lahari Composition in Neelambari raaga. Kruti also has a nice Chiite Swaram.
We can hear this rare gem rendered by Rama Varma Sir during Sir's maiden concert at Navaratri Mantapam.

The Concluding day of Rama Varma Sir's Swathi Thirunal Maharaja compositions workshop started with revision of compositions taught by Sir in behag , Anandabhairavi and later the charanam of Neelambari raaga kruti Ananda valli was taught by Rama Varma Sir.

This was followed by swara exercise sin Kapi raaga . Swathi Thirunal keertana on Sri Rama , ' Vihara Manasa Raame ' in Kaapi raaga set to Mishra Chapu , frequently rendered by Varma Sir's favourite music maestro M D Ramanathan was taught at workshop.

Wonderful list of songs, especially Swathi Thirunal's western note composition which I have not heard before.
The documentary on Padmanabhapuram adds new meaning to the beautiful and lilting Neelambari that was taught.
