Postage Stamps honouring Musicians.

India Post has released a set of eight stamps honouring Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, D K Pattammal, Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Carnatic musicians who passed away recently have not been included: Lalgudi Jayarman, M.S. Gopalakrishnan and others. I do not know if Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and other seniors were honored earlier. It is good that at least one from the south, DKP found a place in the "Imperialist" list.

The greatest unrecognized musician MD Ramanathan should be included first in the list.He is the least remembered musician.Mr.Krishna murthy a school teacher holds an event in his memory in April every year in Trivandrum.I do not know whether Chennai holds any festival in his name.Very sad that he made Chennai his home yet goes unrecognised.

Again, the north indian bias against south indians. Semmangudi, Brinda-Muktha (especailly in the latter's centenary year), MDR, Papa Venkatramiah, Lalgudi, all these could have been honoured with stamps. but these names do not count for much in the north indian power circles. When all south indians are classified as madrasis, by the ignorant yet arrogant northies, what better can we expect from those snobs?

Yes, and I thought, this year besides DKP, several southerners are honored.

National honors are most of the time disappointing because of the imbalance in the number of awards. That's why musicians should be awarded even more widely state wise.
