Re: Interview with Dr. L Subramaniam
I really appreciate two points made by Dr. LS in the interview (not his exact words):
1) A scientific outlook helps in diving into depth of music instead of skimming the surface under the pretext of traditional practices.
Of course, the scientific outlook need not be learned through a formal education; some people have it naturally and some people have to acquire it. Both are needed - scientific outlook and tradition - to exel at any pursuit.
2) Without a strong grounding in one's tradition, taking up other's tradition will only result in a mimicry of the superficial elements of that tradition.

Tradition is body and works of excellence also celebration of excellence. Traditional practices are based on the lakshya and lakshana. Both are based on the science and art in practice. Such strong foundation only makes the art rich and supreme. Technical expertise and virtuosity enhancement with the study of Western Classical has taken place. Rasikas looking for excitement have been well served. Also the technique of 'clap-trap'.
